Luigi moves like his shoes have been slathered in butter as a prank, I’m glad they toned this down a bit in later games that have him move differently to Mario.
No, actually it was Nintendo America that thought the game was too hard for North American audiences so Japan adapted Doki Doki Panic into Super Mario bros 2.
The difficulty was just part of the complaint from some of NOA's play testers, I also understand management was concerned about releasing a sequel that looked so similar to Mario 1. This goes into why they rebranded DokiDoki Panic as Mario 2; it was similar enough to Mario already and looked generationaly better from Mario 1. I'll also add that Lost Levels isn't just hard, it's mean. For anyone thinking troll levels started in Mario Maker or ROM hacks, think again. It started here in Lost Levels. It's got "kaizo blocks", it's got absurd wind physics, it's got poison mushrooms, it'll even hit you with the equivalent of a "cp1 troll" and give you a warp pipe that goes to a previous level.
@ I disagree, Lost Levels isn’t hard at all it’s just tedious, if anything. Like SMB it’s a stripped down 2D Mario that’s unforgiving and lacks the modern gameplay mechanics we’re used to today.
@ I think your talking about C-2? I actually find that to be one of the easiest levels, Mario will always stay relative to the center position of the screen, and so as you spring up, push left to travel along the level and then position yourself below a platform just as Mario is falling to the ground. I don’t think lost levels is any more difficult that some of the level designing that we see in more modern games.
The original actually does have the A, B, C, and D worlds, but you need to play through the game 8 TIMES IN A ROW without warping AND without getting a single game over.
Not only that but the original Lost Level resets the counter that changes certain enemy and Bowser behavior. For example, the hammer bros no longer immediately charge toward you and Bowser is back to just spitting fire, which alters the overall difficulty a bit as well. Also the invisible blocks are actually visible in the original version. They're just doing the same trick as 8-3 in SMB1 where they blend into the background instead of actually being invisible.
Seriously, what was wrong with doing that once, or maybe twice at most? 8 times is something 99.999% of players would never even know about without being told.
@@SheonEverwell you do earn a star on the title screen for every successful attempt so curious ppl who would want to max that out or see if there is a reward would be rewarded with a "whole new world" That's how games were back then. Hard core dedication was rewarded - you have to also account for the fact that you usually have like 2-5 games per year to play only. Depending on the family (if you have siblings etc) and if you could get something for Xmas and (each) birthday. So you would be playing these games to death
Man I remember playing this when it came out.... thought I was pretty hot shit at Mario games.... Lost Levels made me cry! Still finished the bastard though... Great to watch you play it Ryu!
A quick Lost Levels tip - if you accidentally reveal a Poison Mushroom and you know there is a regular mushroom nearby, hit that block and the poison mushroom disappears.
2:16 All stars version has nothing the original did not have. They remade some parts and added checkpoints and overall nerfed Lost levels a lot, but the 8Bit versions of Lost levels do have world 9 as well as worlds A,B,C & D too. (And they Are more devious and broken 😅)
Japan thinking SMB2 was too hard is actually a myth. It was supposed to be released in the US, but a single game tester named Howard Phillips at Nintendo of America personally thought it was too hard. They also said it was too similar to SMB1
That jump at 50:20... I used to have the All-Stars guide and I clearly remembered it pointing out that specific jump where you had to jump in and right back out - "V-Shaped hop" or somesuch.
Do u not know how to listen to him. He explains it as he plays. He hadn’t thought of that part and immediately said no more of that. Calm down and listen
It's not that "Japan" thought it was too hard for Americans. The President of Nintendo of America at the time got a copy to check out and HE said to Nintendo of Japan, "are y'all insane? This is torturous". Anyway, it was good call since this "sequel" looks more like DLC. SMB was looking mighty dated even by NES standards by then..
It baffles me that Ryu hasn't noticed that red trampolines are low and green trampolines are high. I haven't played or seen lost levels in decades, but I figured that out just watching this video.
Uhm... For sure the star is a power-up? - since it was the first level, wouldn't it have been easier to just start over? :D Also.. it wasn't Nintendo Japan thinking it was too hard for the US audience. It was sent over to Nintendo of America and they were the ones saying it was too hard, and also not a proper sequel as it was nothing but new levels
It was not released in North America, not because it was too hard. But because it was it was to similar to the first game. Nintendo wanted the release to be more unique.
Ryu I gotta contest… had you played Super Mario 2 (Japanese) on NES you only get 5 lives… for all 8 worlds, or you start back at 1-1. So for your challenge you should hold yourself to the same standard 😅 Also fun fact: Levels A-D are unlockable in the NES version… after you beat the entire game 8 times!!!! Wild as F
You wanna know something funny? The last few days, I was trying to get the og smb lost levels to be compatible with retroarch so I can get achievements on it and the day after I managed to do it which is today, I see this in my notifications. How convenient.
You missed a few 1up oppertunities where you kick a koopa shell and knock over 8 enemies with it. 7-4 was a good example where you jumped on that buzzy beatle.
Well, color me impressed. Amazing run! I guess every Mushroom now is poison in this run! I struggle with Lost Levels even _with_ power-ups! 😅I actually didn't even know about that Hammer Bros trick, but that seems like a huge lifesaver! Even with Luigi's slippery controls, I still prefer him to Mario for his incredible jumping ability! He definitely makes some of the platforming challenges a lot easier (or skipped entirely).
Watching this video, I can see why Luigi misses his Lost Castle, he truly brings the super to Super Mario Bros, if he had to deal with this platforming!
Ryu! what you said about SMB lost level is not true. When Nintendo of America evaluated the game, they believed that the challenging gameplay and design would frustrate players in North America. So Nintendo of Japan Released, "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic," which was rebranded as "Super Mario Bros. 2" for its North American release.
This is awesome. I did the same thing in the Lost Worlds almost two years ago. I have the video on my channel under retro longplays where I played through with no powerups or a single death in 32 minutes without shortcuts. I'm pretty sure it still only has like 100 views. lol Nobody finds my channel but it's actually not hard at all to do this, if anything it's easier to play with no powerups. I did it with luigi too but I never uploaded it.
Can someone please help me out. I remember playing this, more specifically all-stars on the super Nintendo. But I have no recollection of any world 9. A~D absolutely, but not 9. Ryu, or someone else who has played this on the SNES hardware. Can you recall world 9??? And why don't I remember being able to start or even play 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, or 9-4?
24:27 the “nuance” is that you kept going top path first but bottom was correct. The game resets you to the beginning after 2 choices, not 1. Correct sequence was bottom-top and you went top-bottom, top-top, top-middle which are all wrong.
15:47 When I was a kid this wind effect confused me because I thought the leaves were nuts for some reason. I was like, wtf do nuts have to do with wind?!
It was honestly one of the few and best of its time. All the NES Marios on one cart with updated sound and visuals? You couldn't beat it. The version that also included Super Mario World was even better!
It’s mad this game didn’t get released originally because one guy said it’s too difficult for western markets 😂😂 At a time when every game was difficult!!
If you think the snes version was already challanging, well try the famicom version, it’s 10 times more intense and frustrating to play (wether with or without power ups). That’s because you don’t get contineus per level but per world.
I was playing through Super Mario Land yesterday and had the thought if you ever played it on the channel before. If not, maybe you could pair Super Mario Land 1 and 2 together for a video. Just because 1 isn't long and I'm not sure how long 2 is, but I'm sure you could blow through it quick. Just an idea for some content
I love that you are getting back to this game. But please consider playing another version as well some time (the Allstars version is changed and also nerfed a lot)
@38:14 - True that, considering most of the games I played last year were rom hacks of Pokemon Emerald. And honestly? That may very well continue, if Gamefreak continues to forget how to make great Pokemon games, honestly. :/
No power-up run, but he immediately gets a star 😂
To be fair he did decide not to get any going forward after that. It's a fun challenge so the most important part isnt the rules but to have fun!
@@austinseph1yeah I’m just teasing him bro
What about when he said at level 4 something about "I know these levels from the speed runs" then almost immediately dies 😅
I wish we’d see more rom hacks like Mario Adventure III than old games everybody has seen before.
habit from back when i did any% speedruns
The level spells "thank you" in Japanese in level 9-4 39:23

@SeminoleRail probably Myamoto-San who was in charge for that game personally
29:17 I recently watched the original full run from 4 years ago, it’s funny how ryu fell for some of these trolls then too 😅
"I'm going to do this with NO POWER UPS"
*a literal minute later
"Well... I forgot so I'm going to do it with just THAT ONE POWER UP AND NONE MORE"
also technically in this game Luigi himself is literally a "power-up" of Mario, because Luigi can jump way higher, making a lot of levels easier lol

The original Mario Bros game. Yes, had snow levels, but they were just more like white tops on. The ground and shrooms
I played this to death when the SMB Game & Watch came out.
I personally think Luigi is way easier in almost all situations than Mario in this game.
"I happen to be a swimming expert."
I laugh at the swimming physics in this game.
I had the same thought about the star you did. Glad you decided not to keep getting them, hope you had fun!
Luigi is the new national hero
😂
Yeah I heard he shot a health insurance ceo. Or wait, was that a different Luigi?
The Bowser Fight music... 💃🏻 🕺 😂

also, I'm pretty sure animation exists of this scene 36:30 where after giving a kiss,
Peach actually goes down and Mario or Luigi's heart eyes stay :)
last time i played lost levels, it sometimes took me about 20 lives to pass a stage. thanks for making me feel even more inept at platforming lmao

all stars is what i had as a kid to play mario so this is so nostalgic
I like the artwork, should have option in SMM 3
I'll watch, but no way this can top the REAL Lost Levels video from a couple days ago!😂😂😂
The Background in some of the -3 Levels (3-3 for example) reminds me always to the bird area in Terranigma.
link to the mario world video? also, not beating OG mario bros without powerups makes that game harder for some reason?
I never knew that Luigi had different physics on this game 👀

Am I the only one frustrated at his seeming unwillingness to collect coins to help get extra lives
he ALWAYS does that, he often doesn't even grab coins and or even 1-ups that are literally in front of him, free for the taking....
I mean, if this was also a no continue or game over challenge, it would be a different story, I suppose.
I dont know why but the water levels theme in this version sound very Secret of Mana ish 😅
I think the American Nintendo rep thought it was too difficult.
Tha All-Star versions are the best
no power-up run, but with unlimited lives😂
Dang, Peach is dirty.
Did you know the number of toads that emerge from the bag at the end of a world is equal to the world number? Most of the time anyways
