Famous Croydon Ozone Baths Now Garden Centre DRIVE BY ABANDONED

- We were driving along through Croydon to get to another Urbex location and we passed a building that caught my eye because it looked abandoned. We stopped and took a look and found that there were several ways into this property and only upon leaving and doing some research we find out that this was a famous Ozone Baths which means that it was meant to simulate warmer climates and beach enviroments and was "supposed" to be healthy.
Located off the Purley Way playing fields the diving board is the only object remaining to show this was once a highly popular outdoor lido swimming pool. In use from 20th July 1935, the official opening included a diving display from USA diving champion Pete Desjardins. He had won gold medals at the 1928 Olympics in the 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform.
The outdoor heated pool was hugely popular and during the pre-war period up to three thousand people would visit each day. The diving board had three, five and ten metre platforms and was built from reinforced concrete a material that had recently been discovered. Architects were keen to show how this material could be sculpted to form a fluted design in the art deco style.
After the war numbers using the pool declined as people could travel to warmer climates. The heating was switched off and the ozone system that was found to irritate the skin and be harmful to health was replaced by chlorination. From personal experience I can confirm that the water was very cold and not favourable to fair weather swimmers. The pool finally closed its doors in 1979.
In September 2014 English Heritage marked a grade 2 listing to the art decor diving board. At the end of 2018 the Wyevale garden centre closed and all vestiges of its trading activities have been removed and the ground cleared. The land has been earmarked for possible housing, but the diving board remains defiant as a testimony to a bygone age.
This became the Wyevale Garden Centre which became derelict and sold to a property developer but no nows on its fate.

I worked at the pool up until 1979. It had 2 shallow ends and a 15ft middle. That house was lived in by a Mr Wheeler who was in charge of London Borough of Croydon's leisure services. Was a fantastic place to work and in the hot summer of 76 saw over 3,000 swimmers in on one day. Happy days but sad to see how it's ended up. Took about a week to fill the pool because if done too fast it would take all the water pressure away from the Waddon Estate and other local buildings.

From what I remember, back in the 60s there wasn't much safety around the diving boards. People didn't take much notice of swimmers underneath. good to see that it is still there.

It was the old open air lido what got used for parachute training from the top diving board. It then went to rockinghams garden centre then changed to Kennedy's garden centre where I worked. Then changed management to wyevale garden centre that ruined it. Down in the basement is the old pipework and mechanical gear. Lots of history around that area

Well it was just a bog standard garden centre called Wyvale and prior to that Rockinghams. They left the old Lido diving board up when it closed in the 70s. Have these so called 200 houses been built on it yet?!

There actually was a way into that room that looked walled off there was a very white storage locker style door that blended into the wall pretty well with it being so white you wouldn't have noticed it unless you were really looking at it I just happened to pause the video at that moment and noticed it blends into the wall really well. Oh and on top of the security panel thing over by those automatic doors on top there was actually a cash box probably nothing in it but I don't think you really noticed it it's either a cash box or some kind of small safe

This is a great classic explore. Somewhat understated, very comfy, no fluff, no drama, no hyperbole or other bollocks.
Imagine if a security dick had been here for the owner and ruined what is essentially a great documenting of the site?

So wierd watching you explore somewhere I used to go with my little girl only a few years ago 😭 we used to love walking to the garden centre and getting a coffee. So odd seeing it in that state ☹️
Such a shame when things close down overnight and end up like this. More money in houses than garden centres... which is why in the end cities will just be houses, no shops... no cinemas, no pubs. Unless people push back.
