Kirby, great video. Years ago I stopped putting my wallet in the rear pocket. I can't tell you how many casual trousers I’ve ruined because of this. All your comments are spot on. The only thing you may want to add is not to carry loose change. Keep up the great work.
Great video Kirby. If you love fountain pens, a great daily carry is the Aurora 88. They are elegant and light. And they are equipped with a variety of different nibs including soft/flexible ones. I am a young menswear and fountain pen enthusiast who currently study in Berkeley. Thanks to your amazing work, I have learned a lot from your UA-cam channel. Since you are talking about your daily carry here, I’m quite interested in seeing you talking more about your writing instruments. Thanks! Best regards, Byron
I thought the same. Why the heck do you have to carrie a full sized notebook wherever you go? Maybe If you write a diary every day but it could be much smaller.
Very feasible and stylish tips. I do agree that there is always something not-quite-right about having a phone on the table whether it is a business meeting, a date or simply eating alone. I consider it rude to divert attention at any time, but, in the case of a business meeting, a stylish pen and pad will never distract, I limit my writing to bullet points only.
Kirby, even though I have been a recent subscriber, I have learned more about many things in your channel than most especially because you show that classic still fits the modern world. I no longer go to meetings as I am now retired but, I have started a very very small business from home but now my meetings are with my clients. I noticed you inserting your Mac computer in your note book. Have you ever thought of designing a portfolio that fits the note book plus a pocket for your computer so that it won't slide off? Thank you for your expertise.
Hi Kirby, I liked your point on not carrying a big wallet and the harm it can cause your more expensive pants. I need to get a smaller carry wallet. Liked your binder and will look into getting one with the Dot grid. I have used binders from the art supply houses because of the nicer paper and hard cover but when using it I find it hard to keep my writing level! I also carry 2 fountain pens one with blue and one with black ink. I saw a nice El Casco stapler that I want to buy because of the mechanical look to it. I like the brass sharpener and pencils you are using! Really wonderful video!
What you saw was actually the El Casco Cigar Cutter (the best cigar cutter in the world). I have their stapler, but it kept jamming on me, so I now have it in a drawer. Thank you for the comment!
Hi: Here is a good idea about note cards. I have worked with a company ( engineering) that had me create what they call “Engineer’s Cards”. I had them printed, and made them have round corners. They were 3.5 in (w) x 5 in (h). Engineers loved to make notes with them.
Excellent video, and I feel comfortable because we share nearly congruent notions about what should constitute everyday carry. One significant difference: I was raised on the notion that a gentleman should always carry a knife. Of course, that can get you into difficulty at the airport, and I confess to having lost more than a knife or two to confiscation by very vigilant TSA people, and that’s why the Victorinox Classic SD is my “weapon” of choice. With its single blade, nail file, scissors, toothpick and tweezers, it comes fully loaded for most purposes, and I’m only out $15 when airport security discovers that they’ve got public enemy number one in their sights. One last item: I’m a native German speaker, and your pronunciation of Leuchturm is only slightly more jarring than someone running his fingernails down the blackboard. Thanks again for a highly insightful and informative video
I absolutely love contrasting colour wallets, the blue and yellow is a great contrast, I have one that is black and bright red. I will say wallet construction is something I've found to be not all the same. Most (such as in your video) have the edges folded over, cut, then stitched. Which promotes accumulation of dirt and looks cheap when it starts to fray. A much better construction is a double folded edge where the front/back portions are folded over themselves then stitched together, learned that from the Gentlemen's Gazette channel.
Regarding a travel wallet, I keep an envelope per city that I travel to. The items pertain to that destination such as an Oyster card for London and a Metro card for NYC. I then add cards from City A’s folder to the travel wallet when preparing for a trip to City A, etc.
You also shouldn't sit on your wallet because it can cause back pain. The wallet, especially bulky ones, causes your pelvis to shift and creates a curve in the spine that can cause pain as well as potential sciatic nerve pain.
I absolutely love that bag, such a great idea to use a travel holdall for your everyday carry, just bought a similar one for myself. Do you have any other fountain pens Kirby, perhaps a video on that subject?
P.s. I hope you accept women in your channel because of the so many things that I can apply to my closet, especially color combinations, I never thought of inserting wooden shoe stays etc., though women's closets are different but there is something about the neatness that I admire in man's closet. Also, if I may add one more thing, I now know if man knows how to dress appropriately especially in a tux. Now, I can help and hint to my brother how to dress too. You help us women what to look for. I will keep watching your channel. Than you.
Weirdly my everyday wallet is one I was given from my Great grandfather who swapped it for 2 packets of pipe tobacco During the Christmas truce of 1916, still looks as gorgeous as the day it was made.
Love it Kirby. I can’t stand anything in my pockets either. I have an Italian made soft leather shoulder bag which has a zippered rear pocket where I put my wallet. It keeps it safe as it’s close to my body. The front flap as a zipper section as well in which I place my phone., the flap is easily opened and has two compartments, the front has pen loops and is where I carry my Astell & Kern high resolution music player and headphones. ( I carry two pairs, one for when I’m on the train, the Bose ones you have, they are a marvel for cutting out extraneous noise and don’t sound too bad at all and my higher end pair of in ear monitors for when I’m in my favourite old fashioned coffee shop here in Vienna which is quiet) The rear compartment contains my iPad Air and there is a padded small zipper compartment where I carry my house keys. I never like to have anything in my back pocket, far to easy for pickpockets I find. Wonderful video once again and if your ever in Vienna please drop me a line, the coffee is on me!
Living in a large city, you certainly have other concerns that have to be managed, like pick pocketers. Sounds like you have a nice setup with your shoulder bag. Keeping as much out of your pocket is always the dominant strategy for me.
Kirby... I would suggest you may look to EDC a Swiss Army Knife model Gentleman... It has grooming tools and also if you need to trim a thread, tighten a small screw etc... A Gentleman should also carry a good hank.... Just some thoughts?
Hi Mr A. Kirby, I am a college student and absolutely admire the “Gentleman” way of dressing. I know your channel focuses on the higher end of the associated crafts but can you suggest or make a video on some affordable dress shoe options for those who are in a budget.($300~). Awesome video as always. Thanks.
The Hanger Project Thanks for the advice but personally I think the rounded last is too conservative and kinda contrasts the young guy if you get what I mean.To be specific I admire Carmina especially their lasts.Again thanks for the suggestion. Any thoughts on Meermin Mallorca?
Love the video Kirby! Must haves for dat to say usage. I do have a question, not about the video, but fashion in general. Could you possibly do a video, or just give me some feedback, on classic and unique color combinations for the wardrobe. Trying to break out of my simple blacks and navy’s and explore more colorful accents. Any recommendations?
I was not at all surprised that Kirby is a fountain pen kind of person, I was however, very surprised to see Kirby pull out the greatest pencil in the world, the palomino blackwing 👀 I love that pencil. and the bit about the spare shoelaces, as a skateboarder I feel that.
Great video Kirby. I am currently in the market for a new briefcase. Your briefcase is a bit large for my needs but I like the design. Can you provide a link to a website where I can purchase a similar briefcase to the one you illustrated today? Thank you!
Beautiful nib your fountain pen has. And sorry my bad English I am from Portugal. I will buy my third fountain pen soon,my note book is smaller than your but I hope to buy one like yours one day. Good night sir...
This is pretty much all I ever carry too. I've never understood the guys carrying like 3 pocket knives and flashlights etc. My phone doubles as a flashlight if rarely needed and I can think of the amount of time I've needed a knife outside of my home in everyday situations in my whole life on one hand. My scope of work requires I carry a load of stuff inside or on my high vis vest, but is hardly include those items in my EDC.
The briefcase you have is more like a large ladies purse. Just my opinion. Take a look at B&H video. They hand carry bags can be used for photo great or business gear. I use one of their bags. Hey, Kirby! Do you ever carry polish and a high shine chamois on you when you travel? I've always thought about doing so because I find myself often scuffing the mirror shine on my shoes whenever I'm on an airplane or getting in and out of cars, walking extensively etc. I could never justify carrying the extra weight on me, but it would be nice to touch up my shoes if needed.
I absolutely travel with polish. I keep a series of zip-lock bags in my vanity that each have different things for travel. One has all of my shoe shine stuff: some neutral mirror gloss, black Pate de Luxe Wax Polish, a High Shine Chamois, a small spray bottle, and a pressing cloth. I have another with medicines, bandaids, etc. Another with more traditional toiletries. Depending on where I am going and for how long I am gone, I'll pull what I need.
Great video Kirby, reinforcing the minimalist way. I have a cheap canvas bag, and it just broke its sling - considering a leather alternative instead. Would it be a good idea to have the bag match my predominantly brown leather shoe collection? Saville from South Africa
Hi Kirby Would be nice to see your recommendations for hot climates like Brisbane Australia, Cuba, ... where hot weather all year round does not allow for suite jackets. Max. shirt and tie for business. I am tired of shorts and t_shirts :)
Cool video. Couple of questions though first of all what do you do for a living? Second I'm guessing that the fountains pens are just for special writing purposes but the pencil is what you use for most writing?
