Ultimately the problem with treating sport as serious news is that it isn't really. The Newcastle reporting is an example of something happening that is being reported that will lead to absolutely nothing. Pointless convo.
Royball is working so well because of the individual freedom he has given the Palace attackers. Olise, Eze and the rest are allowed to dribble now. Previously these Palace attackers were being forced to adhere too strictly to their manager's preset build up patterns. They were to limit their own touches and stick to the collective pattern being attempted, as if you can just superimpose a training ground routine onto a match scenario.
Good point. Goes to show that no matter how good a player was, their team mates were or their previous coaches they can still be relatively ineffective as coaches themselves (Vieira, lampard, Gerrard etc).
Joe is bang on about Xhakas reputation. Carragher and Neville are like WWF commentators, they’re more than happy to turn players into pantomime villains and caricatures. It’s lazy commentary. What was more likely to raise Anfield’s levels? the Xhaka incident or the goal scored directly afterwards.
Pantomime villains and caricatures are a huge part of football culture and the commentators are paid to entertain, not to give dry play by play the whole game

I didn't feel like the lino was acting harmlessly. A ref can always say after the contact that this isn't what regulation stipulates, stay away from me, the next time it happens you're done for, I don't care if it's a friendly touch. And just to add something in the end, John, if everyone starts pulling out punches and elbows from mere "words", good luck working in a civilized society with an organized monetary and fiscal systems with law and order. You're allowed to use words, till a certain extent, you're not allowed to go ahead and assault people. City are likely making the CL semi finals, which means they will have to play 6 more games (4 CL ties, FA cup and extra PL game) than Arsenal in the next month and a half. Don't discount some tricky away games for City, who have to play away at Everton, Brighton and Brentford. City don't have a great away record this year, so I would expect them to drop points somewhere in those games, especially if they are going to be tired from all the fixtures.
@@domhuckle Yeah, as an Arsenal fan I hoped they got to the semis to give them yet more fixtures, but they were almost unplayable last night. Bayern didn't look nearly as good as they did vs PSG though.
That's an understatement if I ever seen one, if a player did what the lino did the calls for suspension would be perceived as fair. Instead, a touch on the arm somehow justified an elbow to the face, what a farce. Victim blaming at its finest.
I find this defending of the linesman very odd indeed, accidentally or not (which isn’t as clear cut as people are making out) he reacted to something in a way he shouldn’t have, footballers don’t get anywhere near the same sort of leniency, in this very match Xhaka got called an idiot for pushing someone, if he’d have elbowed someone Christ knows what the reaction would have been. The bloke elbowed Robertson in the chin, I’m all for protecting officials but still we aren’t protecting the players, more and more games, more and more abuse constantly, all game from the fans and then on social media afterwards, this guy had robertsons hand on his arm for less than a second and reacted poorly, we have no idea what Robertson said, he should be punished, not sacked but punished just as a player should and would have been during the game.
People defending this havent seen real violence before, imagine saying touching someone on the hip to have a word is the same as elbowing someone in the jaw
One thing I’ll say on the Robertson incident is that if I was to accidentally hit someone with my elbow I would usually apologise and not just walk away. To say it was completely accidental is a bit naive to me, the lino has clearly let his patience drop and gone further than he should have. Should receive the ban a player would and move on. I agree Robertson completely created the incident but the reaction is out of order.
As a neutral watching the Chelsea thing I see two options, either Lampard does well or Lampard does badly for the rest of the season and they're both quite funny outcomes.
Very harsh on Lampard to say hes not improved teams. If you look at the whole of his time at Chelsea he left them a significantly better team than when he started. He took over the weakest squad of the Abramovich era and left it as one that had the foundations in place to win the CL. Tuchel even said himself that the sacking was harsh considering the job Frank was doing. Lampard has never once had a normal season of coaching in the Premier League. - Joined Chelsea inheriting the weakest team of the Abramovich era and under a transfer ban. - Pandemic with a medical department that for several seasons has had by far the worst record. Knowing the pandemic wasnt permanent, chose to focus long term hoping Abramovich would back him. - Joins the horrorshow of a club that is Everton in a relegation scrap and saved them. Their head of recruitment yet again failed by selling key attacking players and not adequately replacing them. Basically they had an attacking philosophy coach and gave the tools that need a park the bus specialist. Lampard still left there with a defensive record comparable to top half teams like Man Utd, Brighton and Brentford. - Now interim for Chelsea under ownership thats created impossible circumstances for any coach. He has consistently taken on the hardest challenges possible almost as a crash course to get valuable experience as fast as possible. He always made it clear he was working to a long term vision by scoring 1st fixing the defence later. He qualified against the odds for the CL. His 1st season he got Chelsea the 2nd best goals scored and 11th best defence. His 2nd season before the injury/Covid outbreak that December he had Chelsea top of the table with the 2nd best attack again but also the 3rd best defence. Were he given what Arteta was given there is no doubt Chelsea would have continued to improve longer term. The only downfall wasnt on Frank. It was that Abramovich could never live with a bump in form for players to learn from. The only club owners more short term than Chelsea's were at Watford. At Everton he saved a team from relegation. The club itself decided to sell all their attacking players and leave Frank (an attacking philosophy coach) with what could only be described as the tools for a park the bus team. When he left Everton they were struggling to score goals (inevitably with the poor recruitment by the club) but they had one of the best defences in the league. When they brought Dyche in it just made sense because he actually is a park the bus specialist so the glove fits better. Dyche though has a lot to thank Frank for by that defensive record because its significantly better than the clubs around them.
