- Massive 1.8 mile wide tornado in Webster Chapel Alabama, New Liberty Alabama heading right towards us until a size twister moves it away. this tornado went from Mississippi to the Carolinas
For those wondering, it was the Ohatchee EF4 from the 2011 super outbreak most likely at its peak intensity. This tornado was born from the same supercell as the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado. In fact, it was born around 15 minutes after the Tuscaloosa tornado dissipated with no reported tornadoes born between the two meaning that it was two EF4s born one after the other.
Anyway thank you very much for that video, its one of the rare videos I've seen of this tornado.
Hell, it even looks an awful lot like the Tuscaloosa twister with all those suction vortices spewing out everywhere.
So very nice and pleasant to watch a tornado video without a bunch of hysterical yelling/screaming or annoying commentary. Thank you.
I hate my voice and would have taken it out but wanted people to know you actually couldn't hear it from where I stood but my in laws next door said it sounded like a train. As for after I turned the camera off, it shifted back again, I walked out the back door and felt the temp change dramatically. We did however take cover at that moment but then realize we were feeling the winds from it taking a path about 1/4 mile away. No doubt had the side twister not pulled it to the left we would have been directly hit.
Was amazing and terrifying to see this first hand! Would never recommend anyone do what I done and stand on the porch videoing a tornado this massive. I just knew taking cover would do no good. I had watched it on the news from the coast all the way to our neighborhood!

The last part of that is one of the scariest tornado videos I've ever seen. Those occasional comments, all of them accurate, all of them bad news, all delivered in that delicate but no-nonsense voice... as the sky grows darker and darker... Yikes. Great video!

Yeah, YT is finding and recommending more older tornado vids lately. Some, like this one, are excellent. Hope that we never see an outbreak like this one again!
We probably will, they seem to occur once every 25-50 years
We see them every 5-10. This was the worst. A decade or so before one hit a few miles or so south, this one was within a mile. Last year (2018) tornados took out hall of the college campus at JSU in Northeast Alabama. This is a very bad area for tornados.
Hope we do see one. I love tornadoes.

@@erko78 did you not see it? This tornado was multi-vortex, meaning, it had the huge tornado with other smaller tornadoes spinning within it.
@@erko78 Anticyclonic means a tornado that is rotating clockwise. Most tornadoes rotate counter-clockwise and are called cyclonic. The one in this video is not anti-cyclonic.

That's some incredible footage. You can see around 5:30 that a satellite tornado is trying to form, but it doesn't even reach the ground before being sucked into the main wedge. That right there told you that you were looking at a tornado, not rain, and that that tornado was *violent.* That was pretty brave to keep filming after that. That tornado is one of the few I'd say that just looked like death.
We counted 9 small twisters come off of it in full resolution. It was a monster for sure. Violent is putting it lightly

@@F5Storm1 You can see funnel clouds around 5:30 to the left of the main tornado. They aren't there for long and they don't reach the ground before the main tornado dissolves them. After that, keep an eye to the left; you'll see one continuously try to get organized and failing to do so, creating circling scud and funnel clouds, but the main tornado is just too strong.
There was a few horizontal vortices wrapping around the tornado. Amazing footage. One of the best tornado videos I've seen

This is the The Shoal Creek Valley/Ohatchee EF4 tornado
At this point it was doing high end ef3-ef4 damage. Killed 22 :c maxed out at 180mph winds
Later in the video, when this tornado is getting close to the videographer, it's possible to see "horizontal vortices" reaching forward from the tornado, much like the ones that were so apparent with the Tuscaloosa killer tornado. Usually, persistent horizontal vortices are a sign of a violent tornado capable of doing EF-4 level damage or worse.
Every tornado uploaded to UA-cam by an amateur has "EF-5" in the title or description.
I was in in Rainbow City when this tornado hit shole creek and Ohachee. I drove there the next day to look at the destruction and talked to the survivors. I've never seen just a concrete slab of from a foundation left from countless homes. No cast iron plumbing, cinder blocks or anything else was left from the houses. Not to mention all the dead horses and dogs on the side of the road. Many bodies of the deseased were found in tree tops. I'll never forget about it.
All that CG (Cloud-to-Ground lightning) before the tornado arrived is a real bad sign, means this supercell had a lot of power to fuel this monster.

At around 7 minutes, I would be starting to become gravely concerned about how close that thing is getting. At around 9 minutes, the woman casually comments, "It's heading this way!" I'd be like, "We need to figure out where we're going to go!!!" But then my silly butt would probable still record. I'd be hollering though! Not all calm and quiet like she is. Superb video! Congrats on maintaining your nerves thru all that.
There was no running from it and I knew it. I freaked when I watched it on the big screen and realized I should have stopped and took cover earlier.. Lol. My husband and son still can't believe I stood outside filming. Guess you can tell I am no stranger to tornados and bad weather.
Oh and I also had our walking closet, center of house cleared out with pillows and mattresses ready. All we had to do is grad the animals and go. But honestly , if it had hit us it would have probably killed us. It literally pull some people out of their storm shelters. We were as prepared as we could be and I literally didn't want scare my son more.
@@joevgirl Well, for starters, the bases of the cloud decks on that day were unusually low, plus many of the violent killer tornadoes that day were wrapped in rain for much of their 'life'. That means that it would have been very difficult to discern what was headed in your general direction & rather challenging to determine the exact direction the tornado was travelling until it was really close.
[ That's why it's so important to rely on watches/warnings from the National Weather Service (e.g. via an NOAA Weather Radio or via an app on your smart phone, rather than trying to spot a tornado yourself), plus why it's best to watch the coverage on TV where a trained meteorologist can show the radar and the exact path of the tornado.]
Furthermore, tornadoes and other displays of the incredible power of 'Mother Nature' can be extremely mesmerizing. I recall reading how many victims of the horrible Dec 26, 2004 tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people in Thailand & other countries did not head for high ground right away...they kept watching in disbelief as the tsunami approached them & many didn't try to flee until it was too late. So it's not surprising that you couldn't put down the videocamera. :)

This is generally referred to as the Ohatchee EF4. 2nd tornado produced by the Tuscaloosa Birmingham storm.
Ahh thanks. I was about to pull out Google maps and the 2011 tornado guide to match it up.
Indeed, then the storm produced two EF3's in Georgia before dying near Asheville, North Carolina after more then 7 1/2 hours and 430 miles of chaos!
Actually, the original cell produced the Philadelphia-Kemper County EF5, then the Noxubee County EF1, before the cell weakened and merged with the Rainsville supercell. The rest is history.
Wow, even over all the hail and rain falling you can clearly hear the roar of that monster as it gets closer. I love videos like this that are not from storm chasers but people who are staring down a force that could potentially take their home or life. Great courage was shown here and it was a joy not to hear a thousand OMG's or the other typical nonsense that usually comes when people are in an intense life threatening situation. Day of chaos and hel! I delivered the anniston star newspaper that morning in webster chapel. The aftermath still messes with me 10 years later. I made sure everyone had their paper on my route no matter what. Was trying to help out somewhat. PTSD! Jacksonville Alabama 2018 tornado got me tho. Here on highway 204.
You know a tornado is violent when you see horizontal funnels sticking out from the main tornado. Glad it missed y'all home.
I uploaded a video of riding around after.. also had 200 year old oaks uprooted the morning before from what they said was straightline winds. In 24 hours we had alot of massive damage and weather
Many years ago, a tornado came toward Dallas and approached my apartment building. I thought it would be safer in the concrete parking structure, so I went out and sat in the car. It passed very nearby and the wind was screaming through from left to right. After it passed, the wind was right to left. Still can't explain that. It took out the corner of my building.
Think about it - tornado is drawing air toward it from all directions, so the wind direction at any given location is going to be in relation to the location of the funnel. In other words, ahead of the tornado winds will be going one way and behind the tornado they go the other way. The wind blows toward the funnel.
You could give Reed Timmer some *serious* lessons on how to cope with seeing a tornado.
Utterly amazing how the sky goes from a somewhat gray, stormy sky to inky black in just ten minutes.

Interestingly, a police office parked by the Coosa River took a similar, long video of the approach of this tornado. I find these two long, slow approach videos just as fascinating as the dramatic closeup videos.

@@SultanMapping surprised it wasn't an EF5 the one in my video above was off the charts. They said EF5 but it wasn't like anything everyone I spoke to has have ever witnessed. Including the weather channel. We are moving away from the area soon because we get hit so often
@@joevgirl well i think the tornado deserved an EF4 rating, maybe low EF4, trees were barely debarked, there waa no visible ground scouring, structural damage to homes only warranted high EF3/low EF4, and the overall damage wasnt too impressive. It was still an EF4 which is still exceptionally powerful but i dont think it was EF5. EF5 wouldve thrown cars hundreds of yards and shred them, rip houses off there foundations and wind row the debris for a few hundred feet, mobile homes would also be thrown a few hundred yards and they would be pulverized, it would scour pavement from roads, completely debark trees and then uproot them and tossing them, it would also sour the ground and grass up to 6 inches deep. Still a very powerful and violent tornado tho, just not EF5 status.

First off, what is a "size twister"? And what do you mean another twister moved the larger one away from you? I'm not sure it works that way. Not to mention that the thing from what I could tell was taking a constant right to left trajectory and didn't appear to be coming towards y'all at any point.

I think you're referring to the sideways vortice? That didn't have any bearing on the direction of the parent tornado, nor did it appear to ever change direction from what I could detect.

At 9:36, you can see a horizontal vortex at the top of the funnel. I definite sign this tornado was producing EF-4+ wind gusts in there.
They stopped using the F scale in 2007. In the description it would need to be EF 5
what some don't know is that the super tornado outbreak of 2011 was deadlier and tornadoes did a lot more destruction than the first super outbreak back in 1974.
@TJ89741 Exactly. The substantial amount of 'urban sprawl' between 1974 and 2011 made it much more likely that long-track violent tornadoes in 2011 would hit areas of high population density. I recall a person interested in comparing the two super-outbreaks superimposed the April 3/4 tornado tracks on a 2011 map of the U.S.A., and noted that a larger number of tornadoes in the 1974 super outbreak would have hit population centres & those that did would have caused more destruction in the towns/cities they hit. So, it is quite possible that the April 3/4 super outbreak would have been deadlier than the April 2011 super outbreak if they had occurred at the same time.

No, one of the side twisters I mentioned caused it to turn, thankfully. It would have hit us and was 1/4-1/2 mile away. We can still see the path across the field o. The mountain. . I went out the back door and tried to film more but felt the temperature shift and a swirl pick up and wasn't pressing my luck. We immediately left out on search and rescue and was up for over a week with almost no sleep, pure adrenaline trying to dig friends and family out. We we're blocked in, in every direction within about a mile of us. Literally oaks twice the width of my Grand Cherokee were across the roads. Everyone was on foot and fire and rescue couldn't get to the ones stranded. We are in a valley and mountains on all sides of us. Luckily only 9 people were killed in our Community but close to 200 were killed throughout Alabama during this one.
So you’re standing east of the highway, right? This is what hit Mamre and continued south west of silver lakes? I think this is the one that hit right beside our house, if so. We were very grateful when it was all over, no loss of life on our property.

So, I live in Moore Oklahoma and I just learned something new about tornado. This one was a she, so they’re dual gender like humans. She was moving pretty slow, probably why she was able to reach a EF4 rating.

This is the rainsville tornado right? Never seen this video before if so this an the smithville tornado were the strongest of this outbreak in 2011 hacklesburg was third followed by a close Tuscaloosa monster still one mean looking sob ultra violent tornado
Hackleburg was the single most powerful tornado of the day. Smithville maybe had bursts of explosive power that superseded it momentarily and caused incredible damage, but the Hackleburg storm travelled 132miles with 50miles of uninterrupted EF5 damage... it's probably the most powerful storm for 100years...

That was one fucked up day.
1. This is the Shoal Creek/Ohatchee tornado which was an EF-4, not an EF-5 as you erroneously state
2. The tornado travelled approximately 100 miles from just SE of Clay, AL to North of Lake Creek, GA and neither began in Mississippi or reached its terminus in either North or South Carolina as you suggest
3. The tornado was 1760 yards wide (1 mile) according to the relevant data on the NOAA webpage for the survey completed for this storm, again, substantially less than the 1.8 mile width which you claim above
4. I assume you mean a side twister, also known as horizontal vortices, and not a "size twister" which is not a phrase in use in the vernacular of meteorological phenomena
5. Notwithstanding the many considerable factual errors which seem to be too conspicuous for any sapient person not to observe and remark upon in an effort to correct them (hence this post), you did an exceptional job at recording this storm and I commend you for uploading this to UA-cam.

Anyone who looks into these videos for hobbies or for research purposes will have already looked up the info for the tornado and will see the good intent behind info that may be wrong. The storm system did carry into the Carolina's. Depending on which source that is looked up, the information for the width could range from 1760 yards (1 mile) to 2600 yards (1.4 miles).
