I think they inspired from TBBT there was a exact scene, were Rajesh Koothrapalli was set up with a Deaf girl Emily who was a gold digger by penny. Rajesh started to buy very expensive and extravagant gifts, I think it was Maserati and a diamond necklace, meanwhile Penny, Amy and Bernadotte conferenced Mr Kootharapali, said what happening with Rajesh and eventually he break up with her (She finds out he was no longer rich ), so he can ask Claire out , she was patching and hooked up with her ex.
