  • You’ve likely heard the term malware before which refers to software that can infect a device and have terrifying consequences for the victim. One type of malware that is becoming increasingly common is known as ransomware. In this video we’re going to have a look at what it is and how to protect ourselves from it.
Please do subscribe if you haven’t already, it really helps this small channel grow.
Ransomware is a type of malware that cybercriminals use to extort money from victims by encrypting their data or locking them out of their systems. Once the ransomware infects a system, it typically demands a ransom payment, often in cryptocurrency in exchange for the decryption key or to restore access to the system. If the ransom isn't paid, the victim may lose access to their data permanently, or the attackers may threaten to release sensitive information publicly.
Ransomware typically spreads through phishing emails, malicious websites, or infected software downloads. Once it infiltrates a system, it begins its attack.
The ransomware encrypts the victim's files, making them inaccessible. In some cases, the ransomware might also lock the entire device.
A ransom note is displayed on the victim's screen, demanding payment in exchange for the decryption key or the unlocking of the system. The note usually includes instructions on how to pay the ransom, often in a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin to avoid the attackers having to use an easily traceable bank account.
If the ransom is paid, the attackers may provide a decryption key. However, there is no guarantee that the key will work or that the attackers will keep their word. It is very rare for an attacker to provide a legitimate decryption key even if paid. This is why its recommended to never pay a ransom for a decryption key.
So how can we protect ourselves from a ransomware attack? One of the best ways is to back up your data regularly and store it offline or in the cloud. This way, even if ransomware encrypts your files, you can restore them without paying the ransom. It also important to patch vulnerabilities in operating systems, browsers, and software by regularly applying updates. If a vulnerability in a piece of software is found that could be exploited to install malware on a device, the developers will be pushing out a security patch to prevent this very quickly. If you don’t apply the patch you’re not protected.
The most common way of any malware infecting a device is by users clicking a link or download in a phishing email. This is why the best way to prevent this attack is to train yourself to recognise phishing emails and avoid suspicious links or downloads.
