RENOVATING My Little Italian House - Part 1

- My renovation project has begun! In the last episode, you will have seen that I've bought a little house in Fivizzano, Tuscany. In this week's episode, I buy some beautiful outside lighting, find my dream bathtub (la vasca), and share with you my plans for the bathroom. Plus, I make a not-so-round pizza and cook it in Annette's authentic pizza oven.
There's a lot of work to do, but I'm sure that I'll get there soon. I can't wait to get stuck in. Thank you to all of your comments about this project so far. I can't wait to share more with you from Italy and my lovely little house in Fivizzano.

Hi Julie, a tip for hanging clothes. Get your clothes inside out so all that sun don't burn the colours of your clothes. And some heavy tops hang them by the armpit so the weight don"t mishape the piece.
From a portuguese that loves to hang clothes outside as millions other portuguese because it's our tradition..plus the smell of clothes dried by the sunshine is another level!!

Always check for bees or other flying insects before bringing the laundry inside. Also, she used to brighten linens with lemon water, and the sun would bleach out stains. Sending you much love from Washington state, USA ♡♡♡

Brava! I saw how you put the clothes on the clothespins. Much better. As you get do more laundry, you will find out you can actually link the clothes together to save clothespins. How you do is by hanging like items together- yes, from the bottom up. Pants you can do from the legs, too.
Julie, I’m from Panama, Central America, so growing up we all had to hang our clothes on a clothesline- everything, even underwear.

Hi Julie, I'm now 60 and was taught how to hang clothes etc by my late mother. If you open the band of trousers and peg only the back of them, the wind/breeze blows down the legs from the top and they dry quicker. Pillowcases should be hung the same, from the opening and only the folded part pegged so that the breeze can blow into the pillowcase. T-shirts, cardigans and tops etc should all be laid on the line from the bottom by about 2 inches, (use 3 pegs for cardigans etc) never stretch them across the line, you should gather them slightly so that they don't get stretched. @@AmericanViscountess 12:00 I'm pretty sure you need to submit a request to the council before you can install a light on a public street, and I'm afraid it won't be easy to get the approval.
If you wear it on top, hang it from the bottom. If you wear it on the bottom, hang it from the top. That doesn't help with the jumpsuit, though!

Paint the outside of the bath Julie. It will look much nicer than rust. High gloss white enamel inside and perhaps charcoal on the outside is the way I'd go. Lovely video, so keep doing what you're doing.
I agree, it will still look timeless...a dark moss green would also look great.
You can have these iron baths re enameled paint will just peel off if you paint the inside
I painted the outside of my cast iron tub to look like black marble! Sure has added to our antique victorian bath. Process was not that hard to accomplish!!!

Rather than leaving the clothespins out all the time they make clothes pin bags. It has metal hanger and fabric bag with wide opening in top. You could keep that in your laundry basket when not in use. I can’t wait to see how the tub looks when done. Excited.
Yes! My mum used a hanger bag when I was young. It hooked over the line and I pulled it beside me as I hung up clothes. I agree you learn how to hang different materials. Cotton blouses I always hung from the seam closest to the collar cause it didn’t put funny points in the shoulders. Underwear, I didn’t like them “advertised “ on the line, so I used one clothes pin, and since most were nylon they dried fine that way.
Always be sure to check your hanger bag because a bat flew out at Mum one evening when she was bring the clothes in late. 🤣
I repurposed a pair of my daughter’s toddler-sized denim shorts into a laundry peg bag. She is 16 now, and the bag has held up!

Does it give an extra fire exit if you can't reach the front door? Treating it like a long window with only light weight furniture in front of it could work. Something light enough to be pushed aside. A small plant pot with a tall plant maybe.
I was thinking that if she wants to put it on Airbnb the second door would need to remain intact and usable. All domiciles most have at least two exits. At least the places that I have staged for customers.
Actually, you need to use one clothes pin to connect two items. So you overlap the edge of two items and use one clothes pin for them both.

Outdoor laundry hanging tip especially if clothesline hasn’t been used in a while, give it a wipe up and down full length, you’ll be amazed how grubby they can get. Wiping stops marks on clean clothes.
Love watching the excitement of something I used to take for granted out of ignorance. Lived in Milan decades with a late Italian husband who took me everywhere in Italy including his country house in Sicily. Love Forte dei Marmi. It’s a place for the haves and the chics Italians. Watching this from my home here, a Balinese villa in Indonesia.

I hung up all the laundry for our family of eight as a girl and never minded hanging up laundry, drying it, dipping it in starch, hanging it up again to dry, taking the clothes down and stacking them to be ironed, sprinkling the clothes as we didn’t have spray irons back then AND I would sprinkle the clothes with water, roll them tightly so they wouldn’t dry out before getting to iron them, I’m glad you have delight with these tasks, I delighted in hanging up clothes in my daughter in loves back yard about 17yrs ago in the mountain side on the island of Oahu, brought back delightful memories!😊🥰🎉🙌🏻😃🤩❤️🙏🏻
In the Netherlands you have something called a 'knijpermandje', a clothe pin basket. You put pins in when you don't use them. I never leave the pins outside because they deteriorate under the influence of sun and rain.

After your clothes have dried and you put them on a hanger you will see that certain items fair better when hung up in different directions. You may not have to iron as often when you discover the items dry differently depending on how you arrange them on the close line. The sun can also keep some stains at bay. Good fortune to you. Yeah, I am with you. Dryers were unheard of out on the farm in the 50's and 60's in southern Illinois. My mother had her OCD ways when it came to hanging laundry.
@@janethamil9337 Lol, and my mother ruined all my shirts with the wooden clamps. Once I had my own place I just hung everything halfway over the line and didn't fasten anything. Sped up the process and no imprints ;).
I wouldnt took the side door out. Maybe transforming it in a french door. Its easier to take big furniture up and down. Also in the laundry maybe if the door would turn outside you d have better acess to the storage shelves.
Have you considered putting the bathtub by the window and moving the sink and shower where the bathtub is ?

I imagined the same, looking at the beautiful sky while soaking in the bath...plus it would be directly next to shower room. I also love the back door, nice to have a 2nd entrance, also cause it reminds me of my Italian family pictures, la piccola porta.

I was married at 19 and my life was tied up in having a family and 'life is what happens to you while you're busy making other.plans'
It's too late for me now...70 this November ..and recently had heart surgery, sadly been unlucky with my health! I love the Italian people and the lifestyle..was told by a doctor that the weather and lifestyle would be better for me..breaks my heart it never happened but so lovely to see someone else achieve it. 💕 from me to you

Whenever I place anything on a clothesline I always use a clothespin on all items. The reason is when the item wet it is heavy enough and stays in place. Once dry a breeze can take it away. Thank you so much for sharing looking forward to the next visit.

Hey Julie! My mom always gave each piece of wet laundry a good shake out before she hung it on the line. Helps to shake the wrinkles out. And smooth each item with your hands after hanging. Pulling seams in opposite directions helps prevent wrinkles too. Get a clothespin bag. It’s a cloth or vinyl bag you can hang on the clothesline. Keep it close for easy access while hanging stuff. Might sell them at the Vermont Country store website. They sell lots of old fashioned stuff. Very handy to have. Just checked on Amazon. They have canvas ones for $6.99.

Been living in UK and then in Italy so many years. I' Ve learnt how precious antique linen/ cotton/ wool Is and how to maintain It. Rule N°1 Never dry anything in the sun during hot summers. Wish you all the best, even washing and drying Is an Art.

I was taught as a child how to hang washing, but then again, my mother was fanatical, I also knew how to kindle a coal fire by 10 years... Scottish mother’s lol

@@joelaherne8566 Lighting is one thing; cleaning the grate and removing the ashes another! Then bringing in kindling and laying the fire for later in the day (wood fires though!)

I adore deep vintage porcelain tubs, they hold heat like no other. But I’d paint the outside for certain. Let the claw feet patina for character.

Hello! The house looks really nice. It gives good vibes! In Greece (Mediterranean country next door), i clean the clothesline from dust before every use, I don't leave the clothes in sunshine for many hours they look too dry and I hang almost all of them inside out. The summer sun makes the colours of the fabrics to fade. I prefer to hang the t shirts from the armpits. They don't lose their structure. I like your channel. I look forward for the restoration.

Hello I live in Italy and want to move to the UK or Australia...Italy Is very nice at first and yes it Is a living museum and has very beautiful ,majestic and historical things about It but living here all year round for many years Its not easy...hospitals and getting simple things done in an office is a nightmare and lots of corruption,no jobs and poverty.
@@Aurora-qn2dx Thank you Anna for the information. Sounds like one month vacation is plenty to get Italy out of my system. I follow many who live in Italy and just last week an American family shared that the attorney they used to purchase their vacation home stole it from right underneath them. So it is true!
I was taught that pillowcases should be loosely hung by the open end, single side, this way the breeze can fill them and they dry quicker with less creases. Similarly with sheets, hang by one end, then make a big loop by pegging the other end loosely ie slightly in from the corners, then the breeze can fill it like a sail - it looks beautiful, makes a wonderful flapping sound and needs minimal ironing. Wonderful for the senses and the smell of outdoor dried laundry is divine.
I love the bath tub too. I enjoy watching your videos and seeing this renovation/ preservation process of your Italian home.

THE ANTIQUE SHOPS!!! To die for! Statuary, tubs, lavatories, lighting, just everything. America is so young compared to everywhere else in the world. Yes we have “antiques” but not with the artistry and patina we saw in your scan of the shops. I would go broke lickety split. 😃 The bathtub...so long you can squish down up to your neck. Luxury....

All the appliance's look so old and used here,and why are they setting outside in the sun rusting,i rather go to home depot,the appliances there look like you have to polish them and clean them up,and then you have stone sinks.not sure if i like.

@@laureldurham3720 the shower is in a room all by itself, really just an odd cupboard with a shower in it (we had a house with that once - it's really not good!). So she's doing what we did which is to bring the shower into the bathroom, which works so much better.

So adorable...!! You're lucky to have the dry Italian air with the wash load...lol... I always try to air dry things (ever hopeful...) but here in North Carolina, they just come in smelling mildewy because of our high humidity... so we do other things to shrink our household carbon footprint. Brava, Julie...!! This is an awesome project and will be so loved by so many in the years to come!

Great job on this video your down to earth personality does it. Now my only tips for hanging laundry are: 1)make sure the heaviest part of the garment is hanging down eg. pants pin on the legs as they will blow back and forth and dry faster. 2) If you have 2 or more items you can attach them on the same pin and then add a pin to the end now next items and so forth. This way you don't use as many pins saving one per 2 items. So looking forward to watching this renovation unfold. Keep safe

Ciao Julie! I am purchasing my own "Casa piccola" in Sassello, Savona. I am closing on the property Sept 30th. I am so excited to return to Italy and establish a part-time home there. This house is going to be so beautiful. The one thing I would do differently is to make the loo and bidet a bit more secluded or even completely separated and make a spa bathroom as it's a good size. PS watch out that the sun doesn't bleach your colours
I'm wondering why the designer went with an old school bidet- when the Toto toilet (or just the seat) is available? You have electricity for heated towel racks, so why waste the space of a bidet? Bidets aren’t historically correct (so don’t come for me people) so why not choose the improvement of design ~ unless you want to wash feet .... lol 😂
Since a bidet is already installed; buy the Toto seat to add. It’s far superior to bidets. I was raised with bidet- we’ve had Toto’s for more than a decade. They are quite nice. Also good for environment.

Enjoyed the walk out on to the square, and the outside lights are good choices! Getting the bathroom out of the way first seems wise. Keep showing the views, the cooking, the food, the history, the culture. If there's a Fivizzano Chamber of Commerce, they're going to love your videos for promoting tourism into the area ... lol. The visit to the stone and tile market, excellent, a total hoot! The classic tub can be charming if refurbished. It is great that you're going to expose the stone wall, may that work out wonderfully. I can still see value in having that second entrance, and as others have mentioned, a Dutch door of some type could be superb. Cheers!

hahahahaha, this video made me laugh so much. For me as a European it's so funny to see that someone was that excited about hanging a laundry. But then I remembered how confused I felt when two years ago I went to USA for the first time and I didn't know how to use laundry dryer. :-) :-) :-)

In Australia where the sun is strong I turn most of my clothes (especially the dark ones) inside out to prevent fading. I hang things over the line and peg them at the armpits, peg marks are less visible and your side seams do not get pulled down.
To prevent your pegs being exposed to the weather get yourself a little peg bag to hook up by the terrace door and bring the pegs in when your clothes are dry.

We also turn clothes inside out to dry. If it falls to the ground (dont tell mama! Lol), or catches any small speck of anything flying through the air; its just hitting the wrong side of clothing and you don’t have to rewash. Shake well when taking down. I spent my childhood hanging laundry outside.

My tip for drying laundry under the sun is to turn clothing inside out to prevent colours fade. Good luck with the new project! It’s obvious how you invest a lot of your good energy in it so no doubt the result will be amazing!
