    Fun Fact: The three soldiers who caught John Andre & foiled Benedict Arnold before he could complete his betrayal were named David Williams, John Paulding, & Isaac Van Wart. By doing so, they became the first US soldiers to be given military decoration (Specifically the Fidelity Medallion), and would much later have three counties named after them in NW Ohio; Williams, Paulding, & Van Wert. Unfortunately, Van Wart is misspelled, and the US Gov has declined to change even at the surviving families behest (& a lawsuit).

    Mers el Kebir may have been a tragedy. It was NOT a betrayal.
    01:50 this is a totally unwarranted distortion. You fail to mention that the British had just sent a delegation into the harbour to negotiate. The French were offered three options:
    1. They could join other French ships that had already voluntarily joined de Gaulle and the Free French in Britain.
    2. They could sail to Canada.
    3. They could sail to one of the French Caribbean colonies.
    They were warned that if they did not choose one of these, they would be fired upon.

    Any particular reason why you left out the part where the British and French negotiated at Mers-el-Kebir? The British didn't show up up blasting, they gave the French commander an ultimatum with several courses of action which didn't involve any bloodshed. The ultimatum also let the French commander know that if none of the options were taken then Admiral Sommerville was under orders to open fire on the French fleet. It was only after several hours did the British finally open fire on the French fleet.

    At Mers, the British didn't just suprise attack the French. The British commander tried to convince the French commander to hand over the ships or sail them to British ports. It wasn't a Pearl Harbor attack, the French commander kept stalling so the British open fire.

    • @120mmsmoothbore2
      @120mmsmoothbore2 5 днів тому

      "Stalling" because the British purposely sent a Captain to negotiate with an Admiral, an Admiral who said he wouldn't negotiate with a Captain and demanded someone of an equal or higher rank in the Royal Navy be present as every other meeting between French and British navy officers had been before. The British and Americans both got impatient.
      Stop trying to downplay the absolute travesty that was the betrayal of the British against the French, who held out long enough to evacuate hundreds of thousands from Dunkerque.

    Viriato and the 4th Crusade are more examples of betrayals
    And if Majorian was added, Aurelian also could've been added on the list, however the Praetorian guards that killed him regretted it

    • @StopThatUselessNoise
      @StopThatUselessNoise 18 днів тому +6

      The Praetorian Guard isn't at fault, not totally. While the Praetorian Guard physically carried out the assassination, Aurelian's secretary named Eros was responsible, probably fearing punishment for some corrupt crime he did (Aurelian was famously harsh on corrupt underlings).
      To protect himself, Eros fabricated a document that falsely indicated Aurelian had marked several high-ranking officials for execution. This forgery alarmed members of the Praetorian Guard, including the notarius Mucapor, leading them to believe their lives were in imminent danger, that's why they killed Aurelian.
      Upon the discovery of Eros' forgery, the Praetorian Guard were outraged by the manipulation that had led them to kill their emperor. Apparently those directly involved in the assassination, including the notarius Mucapor, met swift and severe punishment, possibly executed by their fellow soldiers.

    Big part missed out of mers el kebir, the British had given the French a forewarning multiple hours beforehand that they had a choice between freely joining them in fighting the Germans and Italians instead of surrendering to the Vichy government, or alternatively handing the ships over to the British. The French rejected both and were fired upon hours later so it wasn’t entirely a massive surprise. Furthermore the Germans DID try to take the French fleet for themselves later on in the war so British fears were justified.

    In my opinion you forgot to add the Beijing coup in 1924 during the second zhili fengtian war. The Zhili general Feng Yuxian made a deal with the Fengtian clique with Feng's wish to overthrow Cao Kun as president so in 1924 he Orchestrated the Beijing coup so the second zhili fengtian war wasn't so long

    Just gonna put this out there, the British did not betray the French at Mers-El-Kebir. The French were clearly going to sign an armistice in 1940 and we repeatedly asked them to turn over their navy for the war effort. That is not an unreasonable request given the extreme circumstances. The French in their defeatist and appeasement attitude refused. We had literally no choice. What other alternative was there?

    Mers-el-Kebir was NOT an outright betrayal. Tragedy yes, but not a targeted act for no reason. I point anyone who disagrees to check out the in depth breakdown of the breakdown of negotiations and lack of proper communication and action between both governments in Drachinifel's video on the subject.

    this is an unpopular one, but an Indian general Shiladitya betraying the Indian king Rana Kumbha in the war against sultan babar is a major one too. Because of that, India indirectly had to suffer under centuries of foreign rule and had a lot of history and culture and knowledge razed

    If you consider Mers El Kebir "a betrayal", you're nothing short of an idiot.
    The British couldn't have known which side would the French ships defect to. In fact, a lot of the fleet defected to Vichy France, aka German puppet state, confirming the British fears. So what the British did was perfectly justified, doesn't mean frog eaters need to like it. Germany was intent on capturing the entire French fleet, but those ships that weren't destroyed in combat either escaped or were scuttled mere hours before German troops arrived.

    Your channel is generally excellent...this was a clever approach. Reality is four dimensional...our minds simplify by taking slices...2 dimensions, say...dualities....'perspectives' to dramatically clarify so much data and so many competing versions. The detail level here, in your simplifications, is sufficient...the humorous, simplified, drawings add humor, and a picture is worth, say, a gross, 144, of words. Vermeer or Velasquez detail would distract. Well balanced, useful, entertaining, informational series. We thank you.
