Allotment Diary Mid July Vegetable Plot, Greenhouse & Polytunnel update & 1st Outdoor Potato Harvest

  • The latest update on the veg growing from the allotment, greenhouse, and polytunnel.
    In the Greenhouse the Tomatoes, Chillies, Cucumbers & Peppers are growing well and forming plenty of fruit and almost ready to start harvesting.
    Up at the allotment the cabbages are growing really quickly considering they are a later maturing Savoy type and a red variety.
    The peas are almost ready to pick with the odd pod now full.
    The lettuce are growing way too fast to eat them all and I'm going to have to start giving some away.
    The garlic is doing OK but is slow to bulb so I'm feeding with some high potash fertilizer to help make the bulbs a bit bigger.
    The giant marrows are growing well but the risk of gale force winds this weekend is a bit worrying as I'm not sure they'll survive.
    The onions are doing OK and the remaining ones that didb't go to seed seem to be bulbing up now.
    In the polytunnel the courgettes and beans are growing like mad now and are being harvested frequently.
    The giant onion is still growing albeit slowly, fingers crossed it grows for another month or so.
    Harvested the first of the outdoor container grown potatoes and was surprised at the amount I got.
    That's about it folks..
    Happy Gardening.

    I love your 'pet' onion.... you look after it like a child.... I hope it grows to your expectations. Peter was asking for your help on his blog... his onions aren't big enough for his show but they look great to me. Best of luck with the weather.... gorgeous part of the Country.. Was up in York on Tuesday.

    hi dan, what a lovely crop of spuds, having seen yours I tipped one of mine out today and got just over 2lbs ,after the wife stopped laughing she said why don't you dig those ones you dumped in the compost heap out as I had about 8 split and soft ones over in april and just left them to grow in the far corner of the heap,well this time she nearly wet herself as I kept pulling out loads of spuds,in total just over 10lbs,i think next year I will dump everything in the compost heap and hope for the best, cheers john

I do listen to everything you say and am trying to gradually build up my soil so I am hopeful that one day when I have all the infrastructure in place that I will get some beauties like you. Fingers crossed eh. Many thanks Dan, and all the best.

    Brilliant vid as always. Love your natural commentary and Yorkshire lingo. Not so much different from us in Lancs. not looking forward to winds if they come as you say. I'm on my 4th attempt green beans and they're hardly in flower yet and only 5ft tall. Winds will kill em off! My indoor cuke got flowers and no cucumbers yet! Chillies great and harvesting my outdoor bush toms already, indoor ones nowhere near ready. keep an eye on turnips. Mine are super quick. Seed to table in under a month! Don't ask me how and leaves huge! Hot here around teatime about 25* only 10-12 overnight. My 2 cabbage I planted a month ago as 2" seedlings are now ft long sprout plants! Packet obviously wrong!

    Hi Dan. Top video of the plot and missed your tour around. Seems everything's flying now after a shite start. Put some Miracle Grow in the King Eddies as suggested, and bugger me sideways! Flying along now and new green shoots popping up.. Cheers for that. Can't believe the yield you got from the Charlotte, We'll be planting some out for Christmas and...We're both plugging for you to get that 10lb Onion :'-) Takes Care, Andy & Karen.

      Little Garden Diary I was surprised at the yield for such a short time, must be the Spuds Galore Fert maybe.Gonna buy a big sack next year to make it cheaper.Onion probably won't go to 10 but if not next year I'll have a proper do at it and grow loads myself and it will happen....maybe.Cheers, Dan.

      ***** Hi Dan. The Spuds Galore seems to have worked great guns. Didn't purchase it until after planting out the Pentlan Javelins and the difference in growth (With the Main Crop!) is astonishing! hahahaha. One of the many things I've learnt from you Dan is you are tenacious, and you 'will' get that 10 pounder :'-) Cheers and Takes Care, Andy & Karen.

    Your Charlotte's look good hope mine turn out as well. There just seems to have been so many set backs this year that I am not sure what I will end up with. Everyone seems to be in the same boat. I thought I'd try Solent White garlic this year. I live in Manchester so we have pretty much the same conditions (except we get more rain probably). I saw your results and thought I'd give it a go. I started them in autumn and they were going well. Then they all grew scapes. I contacted T&M who I purchased from and they're sorry but they must have sent the wrong ones here's a £10 voucher. Now I have a load of hardneck garlic that won't keep and I don't even know what sort.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  9 років тому

      loominL Hardneck Garlic will keep for quite a long time so don't worry.Softneck garlic will still send out scapes sometimes so just cut them off and you may have had softneck all along plus a free £10.Cheers, Dan.

    That is one big onion, I think there's a lot of growing time left so barring disaster, its got to be a 10 pounder. I can't see any blight on the potatoes yet but these days it seems to be a sure thing every year. 10 years ago it was 1 in 3 years. I think it's evolved. At least the Sarpos will be ok.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  9 років тому +1

      catscats50 That's why I just grow mainly Sarpos nowadays.I know what you mean, 10 years ago I had King Eddies, Sante etc growing until October and getting massive Bakers but now if we get past August we're lucky, and what's the point of a tiny King Eddy.Onion wil be 9 lb 15.. just wait and see.Cheers, Dan.

    I like the look of those Ox-horn peppers, where did you get those from?
    Do you put any potatoes in for christmas? I was thinking of trying some Charlotte and Maris Peer.

    Buddy you amaze me. I was happy to get 1.25 pounds of `taters per seed. Two quick questions if I can. Is it too late to get in a crop of Alderman peas? And number two...I want to try for some Christmas Potatoes this year. Do you think I'd be alright planting those seed sometime around 15 Sept.?
    Thanks for the update.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  9 років тому

      R W Glavin Not sure how long Alderman take to mature, but they are a tall variety so probably longer than most.All I can say is give it a try and maybe sow some faster dwarf varieties too just in case.As for spuds it all depends on when your frosts are, I'd sow earlier and leave the spuds in the pots if you get frost.Cheers, Dan.
