This isn't a remaster it's a revision. The director has gone back and used Ai to artificially enhance the picture quality to make it look like it was filmed yesterday. Would of preferred a real 4k scan of the camera negative with a new colour grading. Hard pass from me.
I think that there are quite a lot of 4K blu ray releases that have been revised, fortunately many of them have been done so for the better IMO. The Matrix for example got rid of that green tint which was very evident on the blu ray releases.
@@garytilford6503 The Matrix is a great example of how you restore a classic film. The new 4k scan from the original camera negative and Colour correction and HDR grading look fantastic.
I can understand anyone wanting the negative scanned for the ultimate quality, as I said, the previous blu ray looks very similar in look to the 4k... obviously the 4k has been tinkered with, but it's not a million miles away from the blu ray 🤔🤔👍👍
All 4K releases have been revised. It's not unique to this release.They use AI and automation to remove dust, pops, grain etc. on every release you've EVER watched. You have NEVER watched a movie that hasn't been post processed, sharpened, edited, colour graded and enhanced from the original RAW footage captured in the camera.

I watched my disc last night (Special edition version) and was impressed and pleasantly surprised. I got swept up in the story (again) and nothing stood out as being 'strange' or hokey. Yes, it is clearer and 'cleaner', but the image still works and the brooding tension of the film is not compromised. Having read all the complaints from the earlier American release last month, I was worried that I was going to be disappointed. I wasn't.

Agree with you 100%. Bought this heart in mouth after all the online hate! But after watching it today, I think they did a great job with this transfer. A lot of grain is gone but it's not distracting and the sharpness & detail is amazing! Like you John, I just wanted to enjoy one of my favourite movies in the best quality possible. Not forensically pull the picture apart!!

This was a no brainer as it's my favourite movie. I was at HMV when it opened on Monday to get my copy (Cheeky MCdonalds breakfast beforehand) I'd read the reviews and knew what had been done to it. I picked up Alien a week before after trading in some older blu's and had enough trade in for American Werewolf on 4k as well. I've also got the same blu ray boxset that you have. I'm saving the watch of it to take to a friends house who has a top TV and surround sound system and he's also a big fan of the film.

Honestly spot on John, I was so impressed with the clarity in the picture. Also the smooth motion. Just prestine. I get that some like the grain, I do to as in the Alien 4k but I loved the detail shown here. Very please with this purchase.

I am a big fan of all the Alien except the last. I still love my blu ray set that the discs are in a booklet. I bought both Aien and Aliens on 4K and think they are the best way to watch them on my Pan 820. I also put the blu ray in after watching the 4K which made me happy I got the Aliens 4K. Well said John. It looks brilliant doesn't it? I have said it myself before, you can't sit looking for problems on every 4k blu ray you buy, just watch and enjoy. Obviously there are discs out there with real problems but Aliens isn't one of them. I also have the Alien Anthology blu ray set which I will be keeping, but I will be watching Aliens in 4k from now on. All the best. Gaz.

I’m with you on this, John- my 4K arrived on Tuesday and we watched it that night. After the first fifteen mins or so, I completely got drawn into the movie all over again and stopped looking for the differences. I did notice a couple of shots that just looked a bit odd but overall, I thought it was a great upgrade and the Atmos sound is terrific.

Imported The Abyss and think it looks fantastic. Haven't got around to Aliens and True Lies yet. Cameron wants all his films to look like he made them yesterday and admits he doesn't like grain . The Terminator is currently being worked on according to multiple sources, so will have to see how that turns out. Don't think Piranha II will get out on 4k as he removed himself from it.
I'm hearing good reports on The Abyss Roy, will definitely get that down the line 🤩🤩👍👍 yeah he definitely prefers a look to his movies 🤔😁 it might harm The Terminator as it might not look correct with alterations 😵💫 but hopefully it'll look "honest" 🤞🤞 haha would be great if he did Piranha 2 and finally embraced it 😵💫👍🤣🤣 cheers Roy 🤩🤩👍👍
@MondoChelloveckMovies watched True Lies yesterday. The one thing to note is that you can see Arnies stunt double more clearly with his rubber mask. I watch the film not looking at it from 1 foot away and pausing to zoom in. Thought it looked better than some American UA-cam ex spurts have stated.. Lots of fine detail, and Jamie Lee Curtis never looked better.

No problems mate, they are such solid entries into any franchise 🤔🤩👍 don't know when Terminator is coming to 4k but it has to be this year for it's anniversary 🤔 I know he's definitely working on it, let's hope he doesn't alter it too much 🤞🤞😵💫😁👍👍
IMO the 4K of Aliens represents the movie as Cameron prefers it today. Maybe he would have preferred it like this in 1986 but wasn’t able to achieve technically. So, we got Aliens like we got it: quite grainy and full of filmic appeal. What we got now is a seemingly digitally shot movie with eye-popping colors, extremely sharp contrasts and more detail. Missing is all hint of visual atmosphere, everything looks new and clean and unrealistic … just like a movie set. It reminded me of a soap opera. And I’ve seen the old Blu-ray (Quadrology set) and the new 4K back-to-back. No doubt, the new 4k features a, technically speaking, solid picture but it’s a digital one that’s missing all the qualities of a chemical film stock. Which brings me to the conclusion: The new 4K of Aliens is NOT a technical restoration that brings the movie we know to the new home video format while keeping it true to the original. Since that’s in my opinion as a film enthusiast and collector the most important aspect of bringing an old movie to 4K I can’t subscribe to the opinion that this is a good release. It represents “Cameron’s new visual interpretation of his old film” and that is, frankly speaking, nothing else but technically revisionism and the opposite of film preservation. Just my thoughts.

I've watched this film from Cinema, VHS, DVD, Bluray and yesterday 4K , without a doubt this is the very best it's looked, pin sharp and outstanding colours. I mean unless your a film archivist, it doesn't really matter, does it? You just pick the version you prefer. I think Cameron and Park Road have done a oustanding job with the 4K release

I agree with you, just enjoy the film without getting too analytical on the presentation unless it’s blindingly distracting. James Cameron approved these and if he’s happy, what do we have to moan about unless there’s a manufacturing error. I’ve promised myself a 4k Marathon of Aliens, The Abyss and True Lies on Saturday.

I think the 4k transfer looks amazing, I had to watch it twice to make sure I was not deceived. For the haters, you have the blu-ray version and even the 99 dvd special edition with all the grain and even dust particles. I was re-watching the dvd edition yesterday and it holds up even on a 4k tv.

Think I’ll go get a copy from local HMV in the morning I was on the fence about paying 25 note’s, especially when I already own the Blu Ray in a steel book. Think you’ve convinced me though. I always think the films the thing- i watched these films in pan and scan VHS for crying out loud so I have to chuckle a bit when folks have gripes about 4K versions. These guys should have lived in the early 1980s. I'm not a massive fan of Aluens so im happy with my Blu-ray copy, but have imported the Abyss 4K and that looks great.

Great review John - fair and honest as always! There’s far too many people knocking this release. Nit picking and jumping on the band wagon of negativity. I also recently got True Lies and the Abyss and enjoyed them both. They look fine to me. The only Cameron movie that has a really poor 4k is T2 (that’s very well known) although I hear it’s getting a welcome redo this year 👍👍👍😃😃😃

Hello John, have you seen that 88 have released 2 special Web site editions of Absurd and Anthropopolous, the trouble is they are around 45 quid each, a bit steep for what you get + they won't fit in with the other Italian 4ks. @@MondoChelloveckMovies my copy came today so just checked it. The included blu ray does indeed appear to be a new transfer to match the 4k. I asked because due to me not having the best TV, some HDR content doesnt look to great, my TV seems to do better with DV and the 4k disc looks good as well.

Nice to see you enjoying the films you love. I personally don't like Aliens. I'll tell you why. It's because they created some kind of a formula. In the first Alien film, the 'facehugger' attaches itself to John Hurt's face and implants an egg. Then that concept was taken in Aliens to make it look as if that that's the way facehugger's do it all the time.

I saw True Lies on 4k too thought there was too much colour in the faces in the first half of the film but the second half was good but still love the movie anyway.
They should just do a boxset release like the bluray one haha and can I ask something how do you get the bruce lee golden harvest 4k now really really angry 😡 in my self I should have pre Odered it but had a lot on pre Oder and I wouldn’t have been able to afford it

That's James Horner plagiarising himself, he often did- once he found a musical motif, something that worked he went back to it time and time again for similar scenes in later films. Did you notice near the end of Die Hard they drop in some of the Aliens soundtrack? Can't blame Horner for that, but it works great!

Did the same comparison as you @Mondo Chelloveck Movies . Have a high end, perfectly calibrated Sony 77” and I think the Blu Ray looks more natural, with realistic color tones and natural organic film grain. The 4K is a little crisper and more detailed but, like you said, not much but it has a blue-ish tone like you can see in my comparison here. Curious what you think. I would like to see it as some images look decent - but without pausing or looking at bit rates (I always look at a bit rate at least once on a new disc to see if it is high enough as some are rip offs with quality hovering at the blu ray mark) I would be able to tell. Some of the images look redone because they are - it is computer generated paint by numbers that fills in details. It's fine but it is revisionism and a step down a path we dont want. Film has a shelf life and we need to preserve them before they decay - this is not how to do that. With everyone being tricked into thinking this is a clean up Disney will make a mint and then push out garbage ai transfers from old scans to save money - because THE MOUSE IS GREEDY!. All they have to do is pull out a shitty old scan, upscale it and have the ai trickery pretend it looks like new when in reality it is like a filter some woman on facebook uses to brush up her ugly mug. Real scans with all teh blemishes are where it is at. Its not good.
Hey John- Miss watching your videos. I stopped watching since EVERY title mentions 4K. I am not a fan of 4K and it just seemed like that was all you talked about anymore. You were my favorite but if that is what you want to focus on, not for me.

This isn't a remaster it's a revision. The director has gone back and used Ai to artificially enhance the picture quality to make it look like it was filmed yesterday. Would of preferred a real 4k scan of the camera negative with a new colour grading. Hard pass from me.

I think that there are quite a lot of 4K blu ray releases that have been revised, fortunately many of them have been done so for the better IMO. The Matrix for example got rid of that green tint which was very evident on the blu ray releases.
@@garytilford6503 The Matrix is a great example of how you restore a classic film. The new 4k scan from the original camera negative and Colour correction and HDR grading look fantastic.
I can understand anyone wanting the negative scanned for the ultimate quality, as I said, the previous blu ray looks very similar in look to the 4k... obviously the 4k has been tinkered with, but it's not a million miles away from the blu ray 🤔🤔👍👍
All 4K releases have been revised. It's not unique to this release.They use AI and automation to remove dust, pops, grain etc. on every release you've EVER watched.
You have NEVER watched a movie that hasn't been post processed, sharpened, edited, colour graded and enhanced from the original RAW footage captured in the camera.

I watched my disc last night (Special edition version) and was impressed and pleasantly surprised. I got swept up in the story (again) and nothing stood out as being 'strange' or hokey. Yes, it is clearer and 'cleaner', but the image still works and the brooding tension of the film is not compromised. Having read all the complaints from the earlier American release last month, I was worried that I was going to be disappointed. I wasn't.

Agree with you 100%. Bought this heart in mouth after all the online hate! But after watching it today, I think they did a great job with this transfer. A lot of grain is gone but it's not distracting and the sharpness & detail is amazing! Like you John, I just wanted to enjoy one of my favourite movies in the best quality possible. Not forensically pull the picture apart!!

This was a no brainer as it's my favourite movie. I was at HMV when it opened on Monday to get my copy (Cheeky MCdonalds breakfast beforehand) I'd read the reviews and knew what had been done to it. I picked up Alien a week before after trading in some older blu's and had enough trade in for American Werewolf on 4k as well. I've also got the same blu ray boxset that you have. I'm saving the watch of it to take to a friends house who has a top TV and surround sound system and he's also a big fan of the film.
I got the US release as it came out a lot quicker than this one

Honestly spot on John, I was so impressed with the clarity in the picture. Also the smooth motion. Just prestine. I get that some like the grain, I do to as in the Alien 4k but I loved the detail shown here. Very please with this purchase.

I am a big fan of all the Alien except the last. I still love my blu ray set that the discs are in a booklet. I bought both Aien and Aliens on 4K and think they are the best way to watch them on my Pan 820. I also put the blu ray in after watching the 4K which made me happy I got the Aliens 4K. Well said John. It looks brilliant doesn't it? I have said it myself before, you can't sit looking for problems on every 4k blu ray you buy, just watch and enjoy. Obviously there are discs out there with real problems but Aliens isn't one of them. I’m with you on this, John- my 4K arrived on Tuesday and we watched it that night. After the first fifteen mins or so, I completely got drawn into the movie all over again and stopped looking for the differences. I did notice a couple of shots that just looked a bit odd but overall, I thought it was a great upgrade and the Atmos sound is terrific.

Imported The Abyss and think it looks fantastic. Haven't got around to Aliens and True Lies yet. Cameron wants all his films to look like he made them yesterday and admits he doesn't like grain . The Terminator is currently being worked on according to multiple sources, so will have to see how that turns out. Don't think Piranha II will get out on 4k as he removed himself from it.

@MondoChelloveckMovies watched True Lies yesterday. The one thing to note is that you can see Arnies stunt double more clearly with his rubber mask. I watch the film not looking at it from 1 foot away and pausing to zoom in. Thought it looked better than some American UA-cam ex spurts have stated.. Lots of fine detail, and Jamie Lee Curtis never looked better.

No problems mate, they are such solid entries into any franchise 🤔🤩👍 don't know when Terminator is coming to 4k but it has to be this year for it's anniversary 🤔 I know he's definitely working on it, let's hope he doesn't alter it too much 🤞🤞😵💫😁👍👍
IMO the 4K of Aliens represents the movie as Cameron prefers it today. Maybe he would have preferred it like this in 1986 but wasn’t able to achieve technically. So, we got Aliens like we got it: quite grainy and full of filmic appeal. What we got now is a seemingly digitally shot movie with eye-popping colors, extremely sharp contrasts and more detail. Missing is all hint of visual atmosphere, everything looks new and clean and unrealistic … just like a movie set. It reminded me of a soap opera. And I’ve seen the old Blu-ray (Quadrology set) and the new 4K back-to-back. No doubt, the new 4k features a, technically speaking, solid picture but it’s a digital one that’s missing all the qualities of a chemical film stock. Which brings me to the conclusion: The new 4K of Aliens is NOT a technical restoration that brings the movie we know to the new home video format while keeping it true to the original. Since that’s in my opinion as a film enthusiast and collector the most important aspect of bringing an old movie to 4K I can’t subscribe to the opinion that this is a good release. It represents “Cameron’s new visual interpretation of his old film” and that is, frankly speaking, nothing else but technically revisionism and the opposite of film preservation. Just my thoughts.

I've watched this film from Cinema, VHS, DVD, Bluray and yesterday 4K , without a doubt this is the very best it's looked, pin sharp and outstanding colours. I mean unless your a film archivist, it doesn't really matter, does it? You just pick the version you prefer. I think Cameron and Park Road have done a oustanding job with the 4K release

I agree with you, just enjoy the film without getting too analytical on the presentation unless it’s blindingly distracting.

I think the 4k transfer looks amazing, I had to watch it twice to make sure I was not deceived. For the haters, you have the blu-ray version and even the 99 dvd special edition with all the grain and even dust particles. I was re-watching the dvd edition yesterday and it holds up even on a 4k tv.

I always think the films the thing- i watched these films in pan and scan VHS for crying out loud so I have to chuckle a bit when folks have gripes about 4K versions. These guys should have lived in the early 1980s. I'm not a massive fan of Aluens so im happy with my Blu-ray copy, but have imported the Abyss 4K and that looks great.

Great review John - fair and honest as always! There’s far too many people knocking this release. Nit picking and jumping on the band wagon of negativity. I also recently got True Lies and the Abyss and enjoyed them both. They look fine to me. The only Cameron movie that has a really poor 4k is T2 (that’s very well known) although I hear it’s getting a welcome redo this year 👍👍👍😃😃😃

Got mine yesterday i wanted to watch for the first time on 4 k Blu-ray of the original alien wow looks fantastic what a film 😍, i didn't have time to watch aliens today for a double bill so maybe tomorrow both fantastic films 👍🏻 great video mate 👍🏻

Hello John, have you seen that 88 have released 2 special Web site editions of Absurd and Anthropopolous, the trouble is they are around 45 quid each, a bit steep for what you get + they won't fit in with the other Italian 4ks. its a good transfer but its defo too much DNR. and a slight colour shift also did you play the blu ray on your 4k tv ?
It's a great transfer Chris 😁👍 I personally didn't see any off-putting DNR in the sequences I watched, but I'm going to watch the full movie soon, I played the older blu Ray on my 4k TV.....well its the only TV I have Chris 🤔😁😁👍👍

@chrisburns7979 I was expecting the previous blu ray to look gritty in comparison but I was really surprised how clean that one looked Chris 🤔 as I said if this 4k looks too good for anyone, that previous blu ray would be more than sufficient to please everyone I think 🤔😁😁👍👍

@@MondoChelloveckMovies my copy came today so just checked it. The included blu ray does indeed appear to be a new transfer to match the 4k. I asked because due to me not having the best TV, some HDR content doesnt look to great, my TV seems to do better with DV and the 4k disc looks good as well.

I personally don't like Aliens. I'll tell you why. It's because they created some kind of a formula. In the first Alien film, the 'facehugger' attaches itself to John Hurt's face and implants an egg. Then that concept was taken in Aliens to make it look as if that that's the way facehugger's do it all the time.
You got to enjoy a good release mate 🤩🤩 life's too short to find faults 🤔😁👍 the facehugger was never bettered than in the first movie!! Good move to have to kinds of Aliens, that was unexpected bud 🤔🤩👍
They trained the AI on the detail from a scan, then scrubbed the grain and then used the AI to put the detail back.

I saw True Lies on 4k too thought there was too much colour in the faces in the first half of the film but the second half was good but still love the movie anyway.

That's James Horner plagiarising himself, he often did- once he found a musical motif, something that worked he went back to it time and time again for similar scenes in later films. Did you notice near the end of Die Hard they drop in some of the Aliens soundtrack? Can't blame Horner for that, but it works great!

Did the same comparison as you @Mondo Chelloveck Movies . Have a high end, perfectly calibrated Sony 77” and I think the Blu Ray looks more natural, with realistic color tones and natural organic film grain.
The 4K is a little crisper and more detailed but, like you said, not much but it has a blue-ish tone like you can see in my comparison here.
Curious what you think.
The original blu ray is in Sony Cinema Mode and the 4k is in Dolby Vision played on a Magnetar UDP 900.

I would like to see it as some images look decent - but without pausing or looking at bit rates (I always look at a bit rate at least once on a new disc to see if it is high enough as some are rip offs with quality hovering at the blu ray mark) I would be able to tell. Some of the images look redone because they are - it is computer generated paint by numbers that fills in details. It's fine but it is revisionism and a step down a path we dont want. Film has a shelf life and we need to preserve them before they decay - this is not how to do that.
With everyone being tricked into thinking this is a clean up Disney will make a mint and then push out garbage ai transfers from old scans to save money - because THE MOUSE IS GREEDY!. All they have to do is pull out a shitty old scan, upscale it and have the ai trickery pretend it looks like new when in reality it is like a filter some woman on facebook uses to brush up her ugly mug. Real scans with all teh blemishes are where it is at.
Its not good.
The UA-camr Nerrel did a video on this and the True Lies 4K. His findings are quite disturbing. I definitely won't be buying either.
I've not really watched too much on the restorations of the Cameron 4ks Matty, just go with if I like them or not 🤔😁👍👍
