Just so sad, and so much judgement. Went to Ireland a few years ago , beautiful people and countryside. I am amazed at their spirit, considering the utter poverty and prejudice they have faced over the centuries. 💐
Truth be told, I'll likely complain again at some point. But damn, I can't now not know how too many people lived on a daily basis not that long ago. I was a child in the 60's and 70's, living a life sheltered by wealthy parents. I can't say I don't feel ashamed of their attitudes towards the less fortunate since entering adulthood.
Hard to imagine, how people could live in such small space. Like d family of 11. Despite the sadness of this pictures it is amazing to see his families still managing their day to day lives in such conditions. And we tend to lament bout ridicolous things sometimes. We are so spoiled nowadays .
I have read many books on Dublin and Irish housing Policy and this is the general setup for a few hundred years prior... Now we might be able to understand why Ballymun appealed to so many at the time!
I remember the place well. I grew up on Rugby Road adjacent to the buildings. In the 70's as a child I found it a strange environment. As the kids there grew up many turned to drugs and joy riding and I know a few that didn't survive long into their adult years as a result. The entire place was demolished and there were a few straglers who wouldn't leave and held up the rebuild process. The site of all this is now old folks accomodation fronting Oxford Rd and Swan Grove is the main portion

Unless we recognise and deal with the genesis of poverty and deprivation we only exacerbate the problem and miss a golden opportunity to grow this Republic. We have been let down so many times, the cycle continues....
The Irish catholic Church has a lot to answer for. How is it possible these families continued to have children, precious little children, when they knew what conditions they were bringing them into...because the parish priest held total sway. I went to school in St Louis Rathmines, undoubtedly with some of these girls. It was very mixed backgounds and a really wonderful education - chosen specifically for us by our mother, a teacher herself, though we had a priviledged upbringing, who believed public education was better at that time. She was right. We had excellent teachers, the Young Dublin Singers for music and an Abbey actress for elocution! Not to mention the free elevenses every day, a bottle of fresh, full milk and a sandwich. What a country of contradictions...

I am living in Rathmines now, Gulistan pc. very close to Mountpleasant, where did these buildings used to be? I now Rathmines has changed up a lot for people of other generations, but I think some streets have a little of the past charm.
I thought God gave mankind free will. Wouldn't there have a come a time where they could've used their "will" to think and save their children from such misery. It's almost child abuse to reproduce knowing what the kid will have to endure.
This is such an ill informed comment; notwithstanding your ignorance, I can assure you most of these men, if not all, were in work at the time and wouldn't have shirked a hard graft even to sustain their existing lives, let alone in search of a better one. This film is about the living conditions enforced by the corporation who were strong armed and shamed, decades too late for too many, into improving public housing. As for moving away and emigration, seeking work elsewhere, your comment is further compounded in its utter ignorance; Irish people practically built Britain and the other places they are famous for their emigration to.
