- ‘We Knew Matt Talbot’ is the story of the life of Matt Talbot (1856 - 1925) through the eyes of people who knew him.
Matt Talbot, the saintly Dublin working-man, who died in 1925, is a vague and shadowy figure for most of us. But the men and women who lived and worked and prayed beside him in the Dublin of those days remember him as a striking and lovable personality.
Anecdotes illustrate his piety and charity, and the places that were important in his life namely his home, his work and the church.
He lived on Rutland Street, worked in the docklands and went to the Jesuit Church in Gardiner Street.
Included is an interview with Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh, who was President of Ireland from 1945 to 1959. Workmates, neighbours, friends and acquaintances also provide their memories of Matt.
‘We Knew Matt Talbot’ was produced by Radharc for RTÉ and was broadcast on 25 March 1964. The programme was narrated by Rev. Peter Lemass and produced by Rev. Joseph Dunn.
Matt Talbot pray for Ireland.
Idiot, read a Bible and you'll learn the know nothing.
What saintly man!! Matt Talbot pray for us.
I sense this mans faith was increasing everyday, nothing to do with mental illness, he was provided with the strength to pray and keep praying, and one thing is for sure, not a single prayer would have been in vain, this story really encouraged me, there are none like this man around anymore.
He inspired the founding of the Talbot Association which has helped many people over the years.
I was wondering about that. In Sydney there is the Matthew Talbot hostel for men.
Likewise there is one in Seattle, passed it by when on holidays there last year.
@@Lee-nh5bb That is Great and I Hope Matt Helps those with Addictions .
@@derekstynes9631 I've never heard any feedback about the hostel, but I think that they offer emergency accommodation, and I'm sure that they would have a referral service for those who want help.
Blessed Matt Talbot, pray for us.
A very blessed man ! ❤ Matt remember me and all our families ❤.
Just beautiful. Thank you.
Jesus Christ is Lord For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life
God bless him and keep him
Mat Talbot, pray for me.
erin go bragh
Thank you for this video on a wonderful Irish saint of the 20th century. We don't have too many of them of late it is sad to say...
Yes I Believe Matt should be Canonised as the Saint of Addictions as He is a Powerful Breaker of all forms of Addictions .
I have worked in the welfare sector in different capacities since the 1980's in Sydney (Australia).
There is a very well-known hostel for homeless and disadvantaged people in the inner city, named Matthew Talbot Hostel.
I had no idea from where the name originated, until now.
Very interesting. Thanks.
I have done the same work as Yourself both in Hostels and Street Work and Working as a Drugs Worker and I Always think of Matt and I always ask Him to Help People with Addictions and He should Be the Saint of Addictions because He is Powerful and Matt is Definitely a Great Weapon to Destroy Addictions and He Helped Me to stop Drinking when I had to go on Higher levels of Medication and it is ten years or More since I became Alcohol free and I would never have Believed how Easy it was with Matts Help and Inspiration .
Beautiful, powerful. Thank you for putting this video together.
Venerable Matt Talbot, pray for Ireland, pray for us.
A fascinating, humble & spiritual man who left a tremendous legacy. He had so little but gave to anyone he could help. Gone almost 100 yrs, yet I know there were many detoxes, rehabs & retreat centers named after him here in the USA (particularly NYC). I read when he passed he had cords & chains around his legs (a form of penance?). Don't know if he took the 'Pioneers Pledge' but I remember my mom telling me she took it as a kid in Ireland & God bless her, kept it till her death last year. I hope to bring some of her ashes back this summer & stop by his grave in Dublin. Thanks for the upload!
Thats a wonderful story and I hope You Make it Back to Dublin and Bless Your Mothers Memory .
@@derekstynes9631 Thank You so much for your thoughtful & kind words! God bless you...
Matt Talbot pray for me and mine
A good fellow
Matt Talbot has now received the reward of his life for all eternity from the Eternal Father.
As Eamonn Mac Thomais Quoted..What would them Foreign Saints Antony Peter and paul know about been idle in Dublin,Matt knew what it was like to be idle,to be late, locked out,Lose a Half days pay,be out Sick ,and get nothing for it……Look after me Mother Matt 🙏
@@tomennis7414 On the contrary, I think that those men knew all about suffering and persecution. Have you read Paul's account in 2 Corinthians 23-27, where he tells of being imprisoned, beaten countless times, many near-deaths, shipwrecked, sleepless nights, hunger, thirst etc!
poor man
He lived through the 1916 rebellion and 1920s independence + civil war . No mention in any docu , about it , did it effect him in anyway or was he oblivious to it all .
I am sure he found personal reward through his devotions and piety though I would neither aspire to his way of life or be inspired by him . Even for the times and the inner city poverty of Dublin he was an extreme case of self denial . There is anecdotal evidence that when laid out the funeral directors found him enveloped in chains beneath his clothes to heighten his temporal suffering no doubt .
incredible fellow, really.
Dry bread?
Did this gentleman have something to do with chains. ❤😂
There is anecdotal evidence to this effect . Found enveloped in them at the funeral parlour .

Good owl matt
Good sleep is important. I feel sorry for the guy
No need. He had great faith, lived it and is now with God or almost there....

What miracles were attributed to him
He changed Guinness into water .

His life sounds absolutely miserable. Poor auld Matty.
No His life was spent in a continuing state of Grace in My Opinion and I feel He was taking what He Felt were the Sins of His Comrade Workers and Fellows upon Himself .
old times was the best.
@@johnbalance3989I’m a Neanderthal man myself
Not if you were living in inner city abject poverty .
Wasn't there as something about him being allergic to cats, and that he kept a kitten in his pocket and sniffed it as penance?
There was, after he did that his head used to inflate up like a balloon.
That kind of practice is not required for loving, obeying, and worshipping God, but Matthew seems like a very spiritual man. I would've loved to talk to him about God and Jesus and the Bible
@@Lee-nh5bb
You can talk to him
The Blessed matty hislop 😅
Father ted episode
Very strange even for the times .
Ollie o brien from tip 😅a old school teacher Irish teacher this is the way he would go on before we had a game if are teachers we’re out sick I used to go down to his class and he be dillited to have me der I would sit der all day and do nothing he be talking about the game coming up later that week great times
This man was mentally ill and suffered a great deal. He had an anxiety condition. OCD increasingly his compulsions dominated his life.and became increasingly invasive any person that lives like this for a day would realise that this was not some divine vocation but an anxiety disorder which left untreated completely dominated straight jacketed his life, this man was suffering this is not a polemic against religion. This man had an anxiety disorder which was dominating his life make no mistake about it
Bless him. He bore his cross. We're all called to carry our crosses and offer them for good.
Well I can understand that Medical Diagnosis and scientifically You are right , But Matt Felt He was Adoring God much like Monks have been doing in Ireland for Hundreds of Years and I feel Matt had that Motivation .
Grim, what a wasted life
He was determined to get close to God. Better than the age of vice and pride we have now. So maybe, he didn't have that much of a wasted life..
Well done you for being able to judge him. You must be quite a human being. You"d probably say the same thing about Jesus of Nazareth.
Each of us has to ask the question of ourselves: am I wasting my life?
Vice and Pride has always been with us my friend@@kingofcelts
I would indeed
