It’s time for another episode of our series Number one in our hearts where we discuss a song that was so grand, it should’ve been a number one hit on the billboard hot 100 It’s so frustrating when a great song come out and it’s soaring into the upper reaches of the charts and then I stalls just when you think it will take the number one spot. Well this one was really tough because it didn’t sound like anything in the top 10. It was a unique song with an amazing story and deserved to be enshrined at the top spot so today we going to change history and give it the #1 spot in our hearts. HEre we go…
He was driving all night... his hands wet on the wheel…Suddenly….he receives a message from above….It’s his baby calling- telling him that she needs him. Tapping into a gifted psychic power of communication they called “Radar Love,” his lover transmits an impassioned plea to get to her as fast as he can!!
“Radar Love”….A frantic song of passion, with a tragic ending by Golden Earring- arguably, the biggest rock band to come out of Holland. Like many rock classics, “Radar Love” evolved from an organic riff. It was a bluesy riff created by Golden Earring co-founder and lead guitarist George Kooymans (kooh-ee- muns- rhymes with gooey)- who was just pickin and grinnin while the band was rehearsing in a rehearsal studio.
George came up with an infectious chord sequence on a rhythm guitar that accidentally became the basis of “Radar Love”... and the rest of the band joined in to slowly build a symphonic instrumental arrangement. “Radar Love” was conceived as a suite- with several distinctive auxiliary parts. For instance, there are two intros- the first is the centered around a dramatic 8 bar guitar/ drum segment created by drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk (zjah-der-vay)
The 2nd intro initiates the song's entrancing rhythm line with an escort of marching snare drums. The track has two bridges- one highlighted by Kooymans guitar licks over the song’s primary melody: And another bridge delivered with a pounding drum & horn combination, that was inspired by the music of Santana- with lively Latin percussion and heavy brass: There are also extended solos, along with a drawn out chorus before a vigorous, climactic finale.
As frontman Barry Hay explained, the inventive structure of “Radar Love" was all very spontaneous, with lots of artistic improv along the way. At no point in the development of the track did the band ever pushback on an idea.

The first time I heard Radar Love was June 1987. I hadjust graduated from HS and had moved 6 hours away from where I used to live. My girlfriend and I had decided to split up because of the distance. She wanted to spend one last weekend with me though. So as the sun rose on a Saturday morning I was foot down blasting down the highway, already on the road for 3 hours or so flipping through the radio stations...Radar love came on. This song blew me away, I was practically living it at that very moment. This song has been my go to at Karaoke and always my favorite song of all time. I realize that this video is a year old and noone is going to see this, just need to put this out there.

Saw Golden Earring live in an amphitheater in The Netherlands during a very rainy concert. Nobody noticed the rain anymore when they started playing. Great band.
I'll never forget in the mid nineties driving up to Boston from Connecticut towards my college love. Hearing this song on the radio in my old Toyota pick up as I went as fast as I could. Watching the skyscrapers come over the horizon I knew I was almost there to see her. It's been over 25 years and I could still feel it every time I hear this song

Woo Hoo!! I LOVE this song, Radar Love!!! I remember flying down the highway, towards a Penn State campus, to see my lover, in 1992, to this song. I was halfway through it, when I looked down at my speedometer, it read around 92 mph!! I was shocked, since I was only driving my little Mazda 323, manual transmission, hatchback. I dropped my foot off that gas pedal quick, because PENNSYLVANIA troopers 😉

I knew just reading the caption it would be Radar Love. I was teen in 1970s and loved playing it while on freeway. I have it on my current play list too and it does make you want to drive fast!😁
I know both these songs quite well (Radar Love and Twighlight Zone). I regret knowing the band only through these two songs, but i have enjoyed them both all these years. They are unique songs within the genre, having a distinct sound that I have yet to hear repeated.

In 1982 I went with my brother to Holland. I bought a VHS cassette with some of their music videos without realizing I couldn't play the tape when I got home to Canada. Different format. My brother bought a Kate Bush live concert on Laserdisc. He could play.

I have seen Barry Hay alot of times at the Bijenkorf in Amstelveen (part of Metropolitan Amsterdam) very tall guy he grabs attention due to his swagger. Always wearing sunglasses.

One of my top 5 songs of all time! The MP3 Player I use for long road trips by vehicle or motorcycle is set to play this song first - out of 4658 songs currently - been collecting CDs since the mid 80s while in college, (in addition to all the MP3s I have bought over the last few years). My daughter likes to initiate shuffle play on trips just for the insanity of "you never know what will be next"

In the 90's I worked as a foreman at an aluminum factory. One night I was alone in the control room and Radar Love was played on the radio. I turned up the volume and really "get into it". When the song is over, I realize that behind me is a cleaning lady who is laughing her socks off. 😃 The best driving song ever, thanks for a brilliant episode!👍❤
I had the pleasure of seeing Golden Earring at the Hartford Civic Center in the 1970s as a warmup for Boston I think. Live they really rocked this song. Always been one of my favorite driving songs. Their comeback with Twilight Zone was a largely MTV heavy rotation-driven comeback in the early days of music television (back when they played music videos). Radar Love on the other hand, won New England rock radio over the hard way by listener requests and good radio program managers.
In the late 80s, my buddy and I were paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. We both had girlfriends attending UCONN. We would finish a day's work before a long weekend and we take off on that 11 to 12 hour drive. And at 430 am the radio would play that song just as we were closing in on on destination. It was powerful. And yes it made us speed even more.
One of my favorite songs ever. Like Dave Dudley's Six days on the road or Sammy Hagar's I can't drive 55. I got a lot of tickets in those days.

It's 1979 and I got a speeding ticket for doing 91 in a 55 on the old Dallas Ft. Worth Turnpike. This song was playing as loud as it could be played the whole way. Never forget it. Best driving song ever IMHO.

I didn't discover it until the 90s when I decided one day to turn on the radio rather than listen to one of my LPs for the umpteenth time. A Classic Rock/Hard Rock station was playing it as part of a set. I listened to that station for awhile because it was so different than the usual stations playing the more current material. The song grabbed me like “Twilight Zone” did in the early 80s when I saw the video on MV3. Little things like this switch on memories. I think the station was called Arrow FM whose frequency was 93.1 and has become Jack FM.
Plenty of stations have bitten the dust: the Mighty MET, Pirate Radio, Arrow, KIQQ, The Sound.

74 was the year I got my driver's license and it always seemed Radar Love would come on the radio in my mom's Coronet 500 as I'd be driving home from a sporting even or concert in Philly on the 42 Freeway in Jersey and the "last car to pass here I go" line would be blasting and my speedometer would be over 100. Thank God never got a ticket and made it home alive. There's an NJ State Police barracks there now. Never caught me, lol.

I love this song. May have something to do with the fact that, even though I'm Canadian raised up here, I was born in Hilversum the Netherlands.
I believe Golden Earring recorded there. Hilversum was the Radio and Music hub of the Netherlands. My father was a pro musician most of his life. My father's and mother's side of the family lived in Hilversum for generations.
Definitely a fast driving song. I do feel stupid for not understanding that the guy dies at the end. One of my all time favorites.
I have had the pleasure to see them play live :) Will always cherish that. Sadly, they won't play live anymore, as George Kooymans stated he has ALS and can not play the guitar anymore and the band stated they won't play anymore as they either play together or not at all.
Oh, and my favorite Golden Earring song is Long Blond Animal.
Loved Golden Earing and I was always puzzled by the "fact" that they only had two hits. It wasn't until years later I heard their whole catalog. Wow! What a great undervalued band!
Anyway the Wind Blows was another hit but not as big as the other two.
Golden Earring felt and sounded so unique for their time. They never lost their touch!
They deserved to be MUCH bigger than they were.

Whenever I heard this song, I always though that he was singing 'Red Eye Love'
My co-worker was singing to it as it played on the radio. Not a bad voice but he was singing red-hot love. I tried to correct him but he refused to believe it was radar love. Had to get a few more in our department to tell him he was wrong before he would finally admit it.
My very first concert was RUSH at the Long Beach Arena in 1982. Signals tour. Opening band was Golden Earing. So I suppose that make Golden Earing the first band I saw live.
Nice episode. I first 'experienced' Radar Love when in a dingy small town BC bar... summer, midday and in the back darkness while drinking cold beers and shooting pool the jukebox cranked this out of the silence. The epic intro just pounded into my head and into that moment. I'm there every time I hear it. 🤘
When I heard they existed was through Twilight Zone. The music video was like a film noir before I even knew what a film noir is. I had no clue that they were a '70s band and their first hit was Radar Love. What a rocker.

During an overseas assignment, there was a Dutch contingent, and one night, in their club we heard this song and all the Americans started singing along; our Dutch friends were so excited we knew of the band and the song! It was a great time.

I only knew of a couple Brenda Lee pop songs. I mainly knew her from her Christmas album that became one of my all time favorite seasonal listens. It was in my mom's record collection that I would queue up on the phonograph changer (it could hold up to 6 albums).

First time I heard Radar Love, It was the White Lion version off their Greatest Hits CD. I didn't even know it was a cover until a friend was disappointed that it wasn't the original. The two versions are definitely different, but I really couldn't tell you which one I like better.
I had this song on a 45, I don't recall what the B side was. The 45 was orange instead of the normal black vinyl, and it was also see thru. I played that song so much I wore out the motor of the record player

Once, I was making my way to Chicago, listening to a homemade compilation CD and Radar Love came on. My speed started to increase without me realizing it. When I looked at the speedometer and it read 127 miles per hour! Good thing the song ended as I realized my speed, passed a cop hiding behind a building, with me running the speed limit.
Summer of ‘74, my summer league baseball team had just lost a state baseball tournament. I was riding home with my girlfriend and her mom and dad. This was the girl with whom I’d had a crush on for two years and had finally gotten her attention and we had begun to date during the summer. As we rode home, “Radar Love” came on the radio, and my new girlfriend out of nowhere, reached over, held my hand and whispered, “you know what today is?” I shook my head, ‘no’ and she said, “it’s our one month anniversary. We’ve been dating for one month.” At that moment I knew this girl more than liked me. We married in January of ‘79 and now in 2022, we’ve been married for 43 years. Every time I hear this song, I think back to July 21, 1974 and smile. What a great memory. Thanks, Golden Earring.
"Radar Love" put Golden Earring on the radar.....it took almost 10 years later to get their next major hit, "Twilight Zone".....which still contains one of my favorite bridge guitar solos of all time!....these guys can rock!

Twilight Zone was a big radio hit in 1983 when I graduated high school, a year later in the summer of 84 I saw them perform a free concert in their home country of Holland the night of the last day of the 100 mile Nijmegen march, wow, what a party that was, and what a blast I had.
I remember how all my school age bubbies loved Twilight Zone. It was a big hit
What's more, "Twilight Zone" became the soundtrack to the pinball machine of the same name.... that bass line creates just the perfect tension when experiencing the frenetic synapse response of a classic pin table. Excellence all around.

My father used to blast this song in his 77 Trans-Am on his 8 - Track car stereo when a was very young. When he played "Radar Love" I always imagined I was in a driving movie cruising across Canada or the USA going on a great adventure with my dad. He's 76 and still blasting his tunes.

I knew the song less than 30 seconds into your video, but only because you left enough clues for this now much older teenager to follow. It also turned out that in my early 20's, I was in the Army in Germany when their 2nd hit came out about 1982 or 3-ish. The Twilight Zone did well there and remember that era of my life very fondly! Loved the song, but always thought it was just Brenda Lee sounding loud and clear from the speakers. I didn't know she had a song called "Coming on Strong". I also always pictured a guy just driving a car, not a truck.
I once lived in the same neighbourhood of the Hague (Netherlands) where the Golden Earring came from. There was a small shopping centre with a long wall with "The Golden Earrings" in large letters (the s on the end was part of their original name!). It was an up-town neighbourhood so I was always puzzeled how this grafiti remained on that wall for decennia. George Kooymans was one of te original members of the band. They already had big hits in the Netherlands in the sixties. Check out 'That day' from 1966, then without later frontman Barry Hay. Golden Earring is almost as old a band as the Rolling Stones. We have a lot of great bands that you guys in the States have never heard of and probably never will. I'm glad the Golden Earing made it acoss the pond, they were worth it. Radar Love deserves this excellent tribute. The song came out when I joined the school band (as a 17 year old guitarist), and off course we wanted to cover it, but I remember we were struggling. Instead we covered the easier song 1969 song "Another 45 miles", which is another driving song. But Radar Love really is the best song they ever wrote. Thanks for this excellent tribute!
