  • In the epic conclusion to Half in the Bag's "Hipster Trilogy," Mike and Jay discuss the "final" Hangover film (unless it makes a ton of money and a Hangover part IV is rushed into production) as well as After Earth, the latest collaboration fo two of cinema's finest: M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith.

I have a theory that the "real" Will Smith is closest to his After Earth character.
Actors don't need to be good at experiencing emotion, just faking it. His apparent charismatic and sociable nature in interviews could be as much of an act as it is when he's playing a character written that way.
He's also said in multiple interviews that the relationship between the father and son in the movie reflects their dynamic at home, and that he was using the movie as a way "to parent" Jaden.
And this movie was his baby. He called up Shamalan to ask him to make this movie as a vehicle for his son to become an action star. He *wanted* to play an emotionally detached character who is pragmatic and calculating without empathy for others.
It's like he's trying to send subtle clues to tell us that he too is emotionally detached from other people, including his family, and is coldly attempting to use his son as a tool to keep himself and his brand in the limelight and continue to profit from it.
Not saying that this is definitely the case. And if Will Smith is like that, I don't want to suggest that people with antisocial personality or sociopathic traits are necessarily bad or dangerous because of the way their brains and emotions work.
I've just always gotten a vibe that he is not who he presents himself to be.

Imagine what the money that made After Earth could have been spent on instead.
    An unlimited supply of merkins?
    A trip to space?
    Hospital bills?
Naah fuck that noise, I wanna see a stupid little rich twirp try to be his daddy.

It was not the Cloverfield (2008) monster, it was the Outlander (2008) monster. It was the same size, same shape, it was also carried from different planet in a spaceship, which crash-landed on earth and the main character has to fight it with melee combat, before the other spaceship comes to the rescue.

In my opinion, the fact that a character in a film is driving around with a Giraffe is funny, but when its head gets chopped off and smashes through a car window that's just lame shock-value which does not appeal to me.

I don't think it's fair to dismiss M Night as just getting lucky. He was on his way to being great but just imploded from a massive ego, or something. After Airbender I gave up on him for good. Then The Happening... Would actually be great if you guys could do a M Night marathon review, or something.

Listen, you were totally right! Todd Phillips makes a fucking JOKER ORIGIN STORY that's basically TAXI DRIVER, and JOAQUIN PHOENIX WINS BEST ACTOR!!!!!" Just to see their fucking heads explode. For real, imagine if you went back in time and told ANYONE that the "Hangover guy" makes an Oscar winning Joker origin story POST-NOLAN, no one would believe you... lmao.
