  • Honestly, I loved both versions of this song. I feel Johnny Cash definitely had a more complete sound but you can hear the pain in Trent’s voice too. This song is just so well put together. I haven’t heard anything come close to it in a long time.

Trent sang this from his soul, his heart, this was a calling for him. To say that a cover from another artist is better is mind boggling. Trent's version is as pure as it comes.

I don’t know about that man there’s something a lot different about being a young person person having time to change. From Johnny Cash’s perspective, it hits completely different and is quite a bit more tragic.

Johnny Cash's version was a cover and it was beautiful and he made it about his life. Trent rezner's version was about a completely different subject, and it was the last song in a story which is the download spiral. There really is no comparing the two. One of the most beautiful songs ever written from one of the most amazing albums ever made

No lie, I've been waiting so long for someone to react to the unplugged version. I heard it like 10 years ago on yt and feel like it's the best version, with the original coming in close second, and Johnny's version being something all it's own. Respect for all versions on their own right. Just a powerful set of lyrics.

So back when pretty hate machine first came out Trent reznor did a small paper interview where they asked him who his influences were
At the time he answered Devo and Johnny Cash
It's crazy that both of those bands have covered a nine inch nails song Johnny Cash did hurt of course and Devo covered head like a hole
What tremendous validation to have the people that you grew up idolizing cover your music
Reznor is a legend not even getting into the amount of awards he's won since he's gone into composition

This was one of my favorite NIN songs. I’m surprised you hadn’t heard this one since you were a fan of theirs in the 90s. It was such a haunting ending to The Downward Spiral. You could tell Trent was facing his demons, his addiction, and his regrets in such a vulnerable way.
The Johnny Cash version was much more tragic because he was looking back on his life and his career in his final days. So there was more weight to the pain, since he knew there were no more chapters of his life to write. No more opportunities for redemption. Despite all of his success, all he was left with was the pain and regret 😿 It impacted Trent when he heard it.
It’s interesting that Trent used the “crown of thorns” lyric from Johnny Cash’s version rather than “crown of sh*t” from the original in this acoustic performance.

This is the first time I've heard Trent sing Johnny's lyric change. Both versions are fantastic, but the original version always reads to be as more anguished, while the cover reads as more regretful. Both distinct kinds of hurt to express though masterful songwriting and arrangement.

Yes Johnny did a good job but I really can't understand how anyone could claim his version is better. This is Trent at his most raw. Heroin is a hell of a drug. The sound, the feel, even his voice sums it up entirely...

I've noticed one of the biggest differences between Johnny and Trent version of HURT is that Johnny Cash's video really captures you more so with the visuals. If you were to listen to both with eyes closed they are equally powerful and captivating allowing you the listener to hear each of their personal HURT reflected in their singing.

He seemed to not be so angry as his original album recording.
He was younger and anyone who heard iit will know, he was mad on that album.

I also love Bowie and "I'm Afraid of Americans" is one of those songs that are unfortunately, how I feel sometimes when I get to know horrible things about what happens in the u.s. ...
