      @@aimeeparrott9204 Why write a trilogy of three interwoven and closely knit tales and then not release one of them, the one that ties it all together. The whole is far greater than the parts. Also the third tale is different in structure and contains elements that the other two don't.

      @jack chisnall I don't know, why don't you ask any storyteller who has ever written a trilogy that wasn't released all at the same time. Did you mean that Ren didn't know it was going to end up a trilogy? Because to me, that's a different thing than saying it wasn't written as a trilogy. It is now written, and it is a trilogy.

    I interpreted this trilogy in a simple way. Domestic violence and how often the cycle perpetuates. Violet was their mother and died giving birth to them. We can asume they were seperated at birth, hence Screech unknowingly killed his own sister....

    Yes! They say there's a thin line between madness and genius. Unfortunately, my son crossed over the line into loss of reality. He was a brilliant kid and a psychologist told us to watch out for furthering manic symptoms when he was 17. I didn't fully understand what he meant, I just knew my son was functioning at a higher level than anyone else I knew. I cheered him on with all of his accomplishments and brilliant ideas. He was recognized by our community and began to have some recognition in the field of science/mycology and water, working under scientists. I, like I said was his cheerleader. At 27, he crept over the edge into a different realm. At 40 years of age he has not come back from that place. Some of Ren's music reminds me of my boy's journey and of course, a part of mine as well. Ren has helped me look at things differently and I've actually found some healing through his music AND the extraordinarily supportive community I've become a part of. I'm grateful.❤

    Great reaction! I think it's meant as a question: it nature or nurture? Or both? Both Jenny and Screech seem to have inherited their parents respective temperaments, but it's also fairly clear that they shared living in a broken environment with little support or safety nets to catch someone drifting. There's no easy path to break the cycle. Maybe for someone gifted with a fortunate set of genetic makeup it can be done, but it's a broken system if that's what it takes to do it. It seems to me to be a comment on that as well.

    Ren personally knew at least two victims of domestic violence, for starters. Then he himself had such a difficult time with his health, he understood trauma inside and out. His father is a drama therapist and his mother is a voice coach, so he comes by his talents naturally, one might say, although his parents were separated by the time he and at least his mother moved to Brighton (hope I have that right). Along with being stuck in his room, even his bed, for years, he had lots of time to develop his artistic imagination, practice his music, and learn video production, right there in that limited space. And he started early, like at 12 years old! Then he got a few years of partial respite after stem cell transplants, when he was first diagnosed with Lyme Disease. But it wasn't a cure of course. I don't know the extent that he still had to cope with a lot of pain, even as he made some pretty lively videos of himself. Now, hopefully, his months of specialized treatment in Calgary will make a major difference. But he has also discovered the extent of permanent damage in parts of his brain ... not the genius wordsmith and creative parts apparently ... thank goodness! With such a story and such incredible talent, it's no wonder we in the RENegade love him.

    I saw it as three tragedies that keep repeating in time. Lot of us know a Jenny, a Screech, a Violet and how all those tragedies bloom in the same tree that takes root in problems in our community/society/us. The more you delve into it the more different symbolisms and metaphors you find and it speaks differently to everybody. That is what I love about Ren's work that there is room for us to observe it through a personal pov.
    also what I picked at all of their endings there was a color.
    Rose of her cheeks - Jenny
    Blue lights on his face - Screech
    Violet painted on her skin - Violet

    Stalactites grow down from the cave ceiling, while stalagmites grow up from the cave floor. So when he's saying that jenny stood like a stalagmite She represents the water that rises from the floor in a peak.

  • @SpiritOfWanderlust
    @SpiritOfWanderlust Рік тому +3

    The key takeaway here is that Jenny ended up being just like her mother - a quiet, shrinking wallflower that would freeze up in a panic whenever confronted with anything difficult or stressful. And James/Screen ended up just like Stevie, a violent thug taking out all his frustrations in life on anyone he saw as weak enough. And this further echoes Violet's relationship with her father - it's where she learned her shut-down-and-go-silent trauma response in the first place, because of the abuse that he heaped upon her growing up, and it's why she simply accepted that treatment from Stevie. So the song is bout how the society we're living in creates these patterns, these cycles of abuse and misery, and these stories are going on constantly beneath our notice. He wants to call attention to that, make you see things you normally filter out of your perception as real. This song was designed to hit you in the feels.
    On another note, just to clarify the narrative a bit - what happened was that Violet died during childbirth, so Jenny and James/Screech both got put into the foster care system without knowing her OR each other. That's what sets up the ironic tragedy of one twin murdering the other, then dying himself only one street away. Though given the evidence of violet's father and boyfriend, and how Screech flipped out on his girlfriend on the phone, I'm not sure it would have mattered much to Screech if he HAD known this was his sister.

    I think its about the futility of cyclic abuse.. and the System that takes over upon the death of the caregiver. many things to notice in this song, like that we dont know Jennys age but that shes walking the streets in high heels and has done this a 'thousand times before'... plus the horror of them being born and lain side by side and then to die the same night side by side on parallel streets. Political commentary is the way I look at this. Basically, Ren presents 2 stories intertwined. There are issues such as generational violence, learned response, etc. Perhaps you could look at Screech as having a genetic disposition to violence that is not curbed by his lot in life. There is reference to Jenny being quiet. But why is she roving the streets late at night in high heel shoes. The 'system' did not provide for or protect Violet. The 'system' did not correct the ills of society for Jenny or Screech. All met a violent end. For many in poorer society this is a common occurance or theme in their lives.

    • @AndrewJonesMcGuire
      @AndrewJonesMcGuire 9 місяців тому

      Plus - initially we see Screech as exactly the way Ren described him in Jenny's tale, and as the villain as he is described in Screech's tale. It's only AFTER we learn about how his mother died, how him and his sister were probably placed into care after her death and how him and his sister never knew each other - that we actually feel sorry for Screech. Which should make us ask, why do we only feel sorry for the way that Screech was failed by the care system, when we hear the rest of the story, why don't we feel sorry that he's ended up in that position right from the start? We were given that opportunity right at the start in Jenny's tale when he was described as "a child of the streets" and neither I, nor any reactor I've seen, has even raised an eyebrow or pondered on it when it was said. No, that's a shame. No, poor screech / James. We just accept that he's a child of the streets and his fate is sealed. Pretty horrific of Society in general when you stop and think about it.

    You're the first person I've seen to go the Greek tragedy route. It's solidly of that type. There's also some Brecht in there (Screech's Tale's singing part is very Brecht and Weill. Anyone who crossed paths with UK High School drama knows The Beggar's Opera) and some of his cadence seems influenced more by Christopher Marlowe than Shakespeare.

    Misdiagnosed, for 7 years Ren suffers from Lyme disease, it is already a difficult task for conventional doctors, but when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms.

    The stairwell part I think is him and Violet looking up to find God. Violet for help and Ren for answers to 'why?'. As he looks up and sees the darkness, you know there was no reply. In the absence of a God...'The Devil comes to dance'. And i particularly love how Ren accentuates the 'c' in the word 'dance' bc many associate him with a snake.
    Ren looks up at God in the video with Chinchilla 'How to be me'.

    I believe that he looked up at the stairwell in order to emphasize his use of the acoustics of the building.
    Also, while the sound of the seagulls was kind of nice, I can only imagine it probably annoyed Ren a little bit seeing as how this was supposed to be taking place in London but they left it in so I've always wondered about that.
    This was not biblical in my opinion. Just a comment on generational trauma, as another commenter mentioned. I mentioned in the comment section of another reaction that while most people mention the connection between the cycle of violence from parent to child when that violence is observed, I had yet to hear anybody comment on the fact that Jenny and Screech never knew their parents and therefore did not observe those traits in their parents while growing up. When I speak of traits I mean that Jenny was just like her mother, she froze when she was scared. She was quiet and nonconfrontational. Screech was like his father, a violent prick whose temper was short and often triggered by (or made worse by) his drug and alcohol use. I was told that "ancestral trauma" is a real thing and will carry from generation to generation regardless of what is observed during adolescence. I find that so interesting and it begs the question: how many generations does it take to correct ancestral trauma and how do you correct it and end the cycle?

And screech was an abuser like his father and grandfather.

    I like that you looked up the phrase. The seagulls just did that, They weren’t added. Well done. I could see early on that you were going to get it. Jenny and Screech were inspired by a news article. Violet was inspired by a friend and Rens sister. The tale is about history repeating its self. That is the British pronunciation of stalactite. Yes, Ren read a story about a 14 year old schoolboy who was stabbed to death in the street.
      His imagination created the rest of it into this spell binding tale.
      I think REN’s childhood was pretty normal but I believe he was bullied at school a bit and his parents divorced when he was sixteen.
      When he was growing up they took him to a lot of music festivals ( mostly folk) where he used to sell his own CD’s of stuff he’d created for a tenner a piece.

    I believe its more a look at how generational abuse has taken hold in the uk. Those who grow up in broken homes often end up in abusive relationships and creating a new broken home for themselves. I think with jenny and screech he's trying to show that jenny inherited her mothers silence whilst screech inherited his fathers violence. If your interested in Rens background you should check out power. He talks a lot about his past also its a freaking bop. Great reaction.

    It makes no sense to me to medicalize the imagination. Ren does what every writer does every day: he puts his imagination inside his characters empathetically so that he can create "truth," a "real" experience. If you're not cranking out genre and cliche, that's what writers do. Ren is an excellent musician, but he's also a top-flight story-teller/writer, and that's what it takes. Lots of writers are neither traumatized nor clinically unwell - they are obeying the requirements of their craft. They are curious, so they often know more about circumstances and how people react than other people - they don't hide from what's going on around them, but observe and learn.

    It feels like you are really getting to know Ren now! I think Hamlet, Bible, etc are all representations of intergenerational trauma, sins of the father. But I feel the fate of the reckoning as well in the way Jenny and Screech replicate their parents. Mother dead, biological father in prison for her manslaughter, and twins are often separated in foster situations. You said it so well. He makes us look at things that make us uncomfortable. That is why this is so important. He uses the standard British pronunciations for Stalactites by the way.

  • @dehro
    @dehro Рік тому

    if I have it right, the story was inspired by a newspaper article talking about a teenager killing a young prostitute and later being killed himself by the cops... the UK have had a real knife crime problem for several years... the first 2 stories reflect that news article (that apparently was stowed away somewhere in the backpages of the newspaper),,, a few years later, Ren came up with the twist of Violet's story on his own, contextualising the story in a frame of generational trauma and abuse. (and yes, if you reread the lyrics to the first song, there are several clues that hint at Jenny being a very young prostitute)...
    additional content made by Ren provide context for Screch's story as well... both kids were put through the system, which failed them.. one ending up selling herself, the other living with abusive foster parents.. he was supposed to do a robbery that night, to get the money to finally run away from that family... people bailed on him (including Patrick)... so in a fit of desperation he mugged the fist person he met instead.
