    How do you get the gauge assembly to light up when it's outside the vehicle?

    You were wondering about the dimmer being faulty...did you get that figured out and were you able to dim the LEDs more?

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for asking and Unfortunately no. The way the potentiometer is structured for incandescent lights is why this is happening. I can still dim it but not in as linear of a fashion as the incandescent bulbs.

      To be clear I did purchase a brand new dimmer and it made no difference so do not waste your money trying.

    Can you tell me which connections on the rear of the cluster i connect 12V + and _ to so i can check my bulbs ? thanks

      Not off the top of my head. I simply used a DVM with the headlights on to determine the 12v+ output pin on car side. Translated this to bezel and soldered leads to power with my DC power supply. What I would suggest you do would be to leave the sub bezel plugged in to your car as you can still access the lamps and test one by one after replacing. I hope this helps.

    For those that are looking for a link I apologize as all links have an expiration. Just note that if you do a search for a 168 LED that you will find this blade style LED. Many now have more SMD LEDs per bulb than the ones I tried so even brighter I suspect than my result. SMD = Surface mount device. For example, the following ebay link, which also is sure to expire, has 20 surface mount LEDs per single bulb! I think mine at the time were only 5. www.ebay.com/itm/Jtech-10x-T10-20-SMD-LED-Bulb-Super-Bright-White-Interior-Light-194-168-2825-W5W/123122707836?epid=785075831&hash=item1caaaf6d7c:g:w18AAOSwaBhdffQC

    The 168 LED will work with the turn signals ?

    • @mondottimondotti7318

      The LED replacements work for the 168, 194 and others in this package type. Here’s a link to deal on Amazon for the 5050 chipset that should work perfectly for our cars.. www.amazon.com/Alopee-White-Interior-Lights-Courtesy/dp/B0182FMWKU/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?crid=42R585LRHR2S&keywords=194+led+bulb&qid=1690345651&sprefix=%2Caps%2C328&sr=8-17

    Hi what kind of the 194 led bulbs did you used for the turn signals to blink I been trying to get my turn signals to work for my 1985 caprice classic but it didn't blink at all same thing with the hazards it would just stay on solid in the instrument cluster

    Could I use a 12 volt car battery to test as I don’t have a table regulator

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  Рік тому

      If I were you, I wouldn’t mess with trying to power it up outside of the car like I did for demonstration purposes. Just position the shell back on to the vehicle connection. If you want to test it’s easy enough to pop on and off as you’re testing the connections of the lamps

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  Рік тому

      Additionally, It’s a little tricky, but you can even replace them without removing that bezel. I’ve done it, but you risk them falling down. While I removed for demonstration purposes I also removed the bezel to clean the contacts on each side.

    Did all the lights turn on behind the gauges? It looked like the ones behind the speedometer did not?

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  2 роки тому

      Yes they do. It just appears this way due to the way the indirect or reflective lighting works in this application..

    Thanks for this video. A common problem for most of us for sure.
    How are they holding up ? I'm worried these inexpensive bulbs might not last.
    Thanks

    My 87 el camino dash lights aren't working. I hope it's just the bulbs. Going to take apart soon and see what's going on with it. thanks for the video. My tach is reading higher than it should also. Any idea what is causing that?

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  7 років тому

      Good observation.. I did replace it with an LED flasher and it works perfect.... I had to reverse the leads on the LED flasher per this instruction and this image digi-tails.com/sites/default/files/instructions/Flasher%20instructions.pdf , as it was keyed wrong for the LED flasher. This is not uncommon for our cars as a mechanical flasher does not matter. I did not buy the one here but rather purchased this one on ebay.. Hi Mondotti, you said you have an 86 SS and I notice you have a 115 mph gauge plate. I was wondering how you changed it out and if you had to calibrate the speedo at all? Thanks

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  2 роки тому

      Please refer to this video for access to and replacement. ua-cam.com/video/mNAXQZL2YL4/v-deo.html. If you are swapping from an 87 to an 86 and are NOT changing tires or transmission then no calibration is necessary. For me, since I did both, it was a matter of selecting a Speedo drive gear ( installed in transmission tail housing and driven off of output shaft). I hope this helps.

    Mike’s Montes sell a brighter bulb #2825s to replace the #168s, anybody use these? Are they too hot? How many does the car take?

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  2 роки тому

      The original incandescent lights in general produced too much heat. This replacement will not reduce this.

    what did you hook up to bench test the cluster lighting? the pin connector?

    • @mondottimondotti7318
      @mondottimondotti7318  7 років тому

      I made some measurements on the Car side with my volt meter to see where 12v came in to the cluster. With this understanding, I soldered two temporary wires to test the cluster. One for 12v the other for ground. I hope this helps.

      Hi. These links expire extremely fast. What you should do is go to Amazon and type 194 led bulb. Then they have filters for specific vehicle applications. I typed in my year SS and got the following below.. But don’t expect it to last… www.amazon.com/Marsauto-Replacement-Courtesy-License-Lights/dp/B079L3WBDN/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=V0RN8FP36D9F&keywords=led+94+bulb&qid=1645033886&sprefix=led+94%2Caps%2C254&sr=1-5&vehicle=1986-47-470-492--7-8-7-1438-646-1-2-1775--1&vehicleName=1986+Chevrolet+Monte+Carlo

      Here is another but again please understand that these links expire quickly so as suggested use the search engine in Amazon along with the application filter for your car as I did. This link is for the 194 LED bulb for my 1986 Monte Carlo SS that also has the sockets included. Just for clarity the sockets are not needed but some of them may be brittle and break due to the heat exposure overtime so nice to have if you need them but was not necessary for my application. www.amazon.com/10Pack-Instrument-Cluster-Dashboard-Automotive/dp/B099RPJHK9/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=38WWNREO6TCMJ&keywords=led+94+bulb+socket&qid=1645917164&sprefix=led+94+bulb+socket%2Caps%2C269&sr=8-4
