    My wife & I just picked up a Blackbird & an Aventon Aventure from you guys about a month ago. They are both amazing ebikes, and we are definitely enjoying them! So far, they both appear to be very high quality, but the Blackbird definitely wins on power, the torque sensor, and the brakes. Other components are likely better quality also, but those 3 just mentioned are definitely immediately noticeable when riding & comparing the two bikes. Overall, we love them both and the fat tires soak up a lot of the bumpy roads & trails around Nevada City CA. Super excited to continue testing them out, and we will plan to do a full review video soon!

    You make a great point...these are E-BIKES, not e-motorcycles. They are meant to be pedaled. The cheap SIS and Tourney 14-28 (with freewheel) driveline add resistance to efficient operation (range) and lower life span. The SRAM 9-speed is worlds above. Also, so many videos about "throttle-only" 0-40 mph on e-bikes. Very few talk about (40 mph-0) stopping power. Your Dorado 4-piston Tecktro again nails it! Plus, having an adjustable stem means that the CABLES are the correct length from the factory. That can be an issue if swapped after delivery. The bike's COMPONENT specs matter, and will lead to long-term happy riders. I also predict that the 26x4 market will fall to $1499 by next season. Too many Direct-Sale vendors with the same overall cruiser bikes right now (All at $1999...???) trying to capture the U.S. Senior Boomer Market share. Mostly made in 3-4 Chinese factories with unique brand stickers applied over the same base-level components. Thanks for offering a higher-quality build choice!

    First I just want to say that I was sorry to hear that your health issues continue to dog you but stay strong and you will definitely get through this period of ill health.
    It has been another interesting year in the Ebike business, my wife and I have a small ebike shop that rents, sells and repairs ebikes only, we do not carry analog bicycles, so we are specialized on what we think is the future of cycling. The year started off well and then with the news constantly talking about recession it cooled a little in July but when RadPower decided to slash their prices to clear their excess inventory the affordable Ebike market went into a tailspin that we continue to adapt to. The Blackbird is worth the extra money and is head and shoulders above the other ebikes on your list, including the Aventure which we are a dealer for and it is an excellent ebike for the money, but sometimes you have to drop the price to remain competitive with bigger players who can afford to reduce their price because of their volume buying power. Get well soon and if you ever decide to open up a dealer chain then please let us know as we would love to carry a quality line like Area 13/Bolton Bikes.

    You could add that the extra 4 wh of the Ariel adds about 3 - 4 pounds of the weight difference from your bike to the Ariel, but good, mostly impartial, evaluation. I agree with a torque sensing system is better. The pick up is more gradual compared to a "oh your peddling, here have full power" I 100% agree that having a torque sensor is a huge bonus and makes for a more enjoyable ride

      @@pwlyons759 It just helps with gradually speeding you up and is only based on the effort put into it. It feels like real peddling compared to fake peddling without a T sensor. With a cadence sensor it just feels like you are going through the motions unless you are at the top end of the Peddle assist level. It like ill get you to 12 km/h then you do some work... with torque it feels like lets get to 12km/h together then ill stop

      I like the cadence but, would like to try a torque based one, better yet, one with both, to see what I like better. I'm not really upset with full power via cadence but, there's times that I wish it wasn't. Having a heart condition, I don't know if I could ride with the torque sensor requirement to keep pedaling as hard as possible to get it's assistance.
      They need a way to use the gearing your in to determine the speed it propels you to.

    • @steve_main
      @steve_main Рік тому

      @@CyborgAlienBariaur I guess it depends on the bike. My pedal assist levels 1 through 5 govern how much the torque sensing helps. So for you I would set it to level five and then back it off until you feel comfortable. Mind you I have the Befang ultra 1,000w motor that has these features. I'm not sure if all e-bikes have this feature. Some pedal assist levels just govern what speed they will go up to some govern how much to help you some do both!

  • @Blame.CRomer
    @Blame.CRomer Рік тому

    Spot on with the Kepler overview (we have two) and comparison of the BlackBird to the others. Kepler is focused on power, with basic components (Altus/Tourney w/ 7 speed freewheel, and a 52t / 11-34 freewheel). I swapped my chain ring to 38t, for ~28mph @ 90 RPM (which isn't horrible to spin to 31mph for me) and went Alivio with a thumb throttle replacing the twist. The Zoom fork and front hub, is definitely an area I do not like (loose bearings in a hub in 2022?). I was actually looking at your replacement fork recently which led me to this video.
    I love how you've specced the BlackBird. The fork hub/wheel is exactly the setup I would upgrade to (and had been pricing before I saw your videos). Nice choice on brakes as well. The 2 piston Tektro HD-E350 on the Kepler should definitely be quad like the Blackbird (especially up front). The OEM pads hold back braking even further (I replaced them with Corki Copper based).
    You did really well on the BlackBird! Hopefully word gets around. I like the way Aventon has gone recently on their advertising "The [MODEL] is not cheap," approach. Anytime I try to discuss components with Ariel Rider owners, all I hear is "Best value" Most power!" chant. It's really not a great value though with the choice of components the Kepler uses (that Zoom fork is dangerous!), but then again most AR owners start modding as soon as they receive the bike and quickly forget how much they have replaced on their bikes.

  • @Poteluz
    @Poteluz Рік тому +4

    I'd put the Ariel Rider Kepler as number 1, the Blackbird is most likely lighter because it has the smaller battery. The Kepler also has the more powerful motor that'll out perform all the other bikes on this list by a good margin.

  • @wandersondeoliveira211
    @wandersondeoliveira211 Рік тому +1

    I bought the Ariel Kepler because I was 265 lbs when I first bought the bike, so I wanted something powerful that could handle a rider up to 300 lbs. I am so glad I went with it. The bike is built like a tank and it has plenty of power, torque, and durability for the heavier rider. With that said, it must feel like a motorcycle for the lighter riders. The other plus is the adjustability it has in the instrument cluster to adjust the bike's speed and power delivery to your liking. I was undecided between the Aventon and the Ariel. I am very happy with the choice I made, especially because I picked mine up with a $300 discount promotion. So I ended up paying $1400 plus tax for each bike, and delivery was included because I bought 2. Fyi the new 2023 Aventon 2 now comes with the same specs as the 2022 plus a torque sensor. I think I would stick with the Ariel Kepler but I would give Aventon a shot at a test ride. The great thing about Aventon is that their factory is near my house and I hear their customer service is outstanding.

We'll be sending you good vibes!...The Blackbird at $1999 is a steal and right now 100% the best value in this $2k fat tire category...Also agree the components are all top notch (dorado brakes, drive train) and a step above all of the rest. Don't let the numbers fool you, the Bafang 750w is very powerful. The 1800w Ariel Rider must be terrific! The quality and fit and finish of the Troxus is outstanding. It is very tall and hard to get on and off, my only gripe. I'm selling my BBSHD mid-drive. In the real world, hub motors are way better. The Troxus is every bit as fast as the 1500w BBSHD and so much easier to ride.

    I have an Aventon Aventure and really enjoy it. I've had a few issues under warranty (motor making noise) and it was pretty quick to get Aventon to send a replacement part. Also, for all the bikes with 8 speed drivetrains, you get the option to upgrade to 9, 10 or 11 speed drivetrains with no new hub needed. The 7 speed ones generally are a dead end. Might not matter to you, but I have an 11 speed SRAM setup on my aventure and it's a huge improvement if you do large hills especially.
    Just realized you mentioned this in the video and you were incorrect. The Aventure is definitely a cassette. I can't speak to any of the other bikes. Also, the Aventure is on sale semi-regularly for 1799.

    I've been seriously considering the Aventure 2 or the Cyrusher Montta or Trax. I have a Lectric I use for commuting and a bit of offroad. I'd like a bike with bigger wheels and more offroad capability. I'm drawn to the Cyrusher due to the rear suspension and to the Aventure 2 due to the quality and feature value. However, I had not heard about Area 13 or the Blackbird and I am very intrigued by the spec and key upgraded components for the price. I'll do a bit more research on the Blackbird and your company before deciding on my next Ebike.
    I really do like Step thrus though.

      I bought 4 keplers and got them on the first shipment that came out at the end of May. I'm approaching 2000 miles on mine. We haven't had any problems. There is so very much I could tell you about them. I don't have experience on other bikes, but price and specs made the Kepler decision an easy choice back when I pre-ordered them.
      The two female riders in my family feel like the bikes are too big. They are 5'4" and 5'2". I researched the seat height thoroughly before ordering the bikes, and that's not the problem. The seat height range on the Kepler is great. Even the 5"2" rider can sit on it comfortably (though I wouldn't think anyone shorter could). I think the feeling of the bikes being too big is more to do with the 26x4 tires and the strength required to maneuver them.
      I wanted a bike that allowed me to sit more upright in my posture, and the adjustable handlebars of the Kepler let me rotate them up. They ship with the neck at a 90 degree forward angle like the Blackbird, but it doesn't look like the Blackbird is adjustable. Also I have a friend that has a Himiway (Cruiser, I think, not the Zebra), and that was his main complaint, that he couldn't rotate the handle bar up so he feels like he has to reach too far forward.
      I think the forward handle bar design is horrible for ebike riders. It's like a carry-over from BMX riders needing exceptional control, but ebike riders want to relax, sit back, and have a comfortable ride, and the industry is really super-slow at figuring this out. And with that said, I'm frustrated with my Kepler handlebars being too far forward, even after I rotated them so the neck is straight up vertically. I wish I could have found a beach cruiser style with the battery and power of the Kepler.
      One other complaint I have about the Kepler, and this may be unfair since I don't have anything to compare it too, but those hydraulic brakes sound horrible, like I've got gravel grinding away somewhere in the wheel. Someone told me I could put softer pads on them, but I don't know if that would really help. I've tried to align and adjust them, but either I don't know what I'm doing or their isn't much that can be done about them. They sound horrible!
      So I really like the thought that the Blackbird has upgraded brakes.
      Don't overlook fenders. They are included with the Kepler. It's not rain that I need them for, it's from sprinklers soaking the bike paths, and avoiding water seems nearly impossible despite living in a desert. I'm not sure that front fender on the Blackbird would actually provide much protection.
      And the Kepler's included rack is pretty heavy duty. So that's a plus as well.
      Not getting into the ethics or legality of speed, but the Kepler can be unlocked to go up to 32 miles per hour. I've done that and gone full throttle. Despite the massive battery, hauling my 230 pounds around at full speed can drain the battery in an hour. So if you're good at math, that would equal a minimum range of 32 miles. But it's actually less because when I say full throttle, I actually average around 26 or 27 mph. Of course my wife, who weighs half as much, could get double that range at full throttle.
      I've toned down my speed addiction and found that I like to mostly cruise at top speeds of 22 to 25 mph, which usually averages around 15 to 16 mph. And this leads me to another complaint about the Kepler. Again, in fairness, I don't have anything to compare this to, but I find the lowest level assist on the Kepler is too fast.
      The Kepler ships with 5 levels of assist, but if you unlock it, like adjusting your maximum speed, you can also adjust your assist up to 9 levels. So let's call it 10 for the simplicity of discussion.
      If I set my maximum speed at 32 mph and 10 levels of assist, I would expect every level of assist to go up 3.2 mph. That's not at all how it works. Nearly 2000 miles on the bike, and I still can't get the damn assists figured out.
      At a maximum speed of 32 mph and 9 levels of assist, pedaling in assist 1 results in the bike wanting to go 16 or 17 mph, which is way too fast in many situations. Level 2 jumps to 23 or 24 mph, which is my normal comfort zone, but that leaves a big gap between those two assist levels.
      So I change the programming to give me only 4 levels of assist, and it still does damn near the same thing. Level 1 wants to go 17 or 18 mph, and Level 2 wants to go 24 or 25 mph.
      So I reduce my maximum speed to 24 mph and go back to 9 levels of assist, and level 1 still wants to go too fast at 13 or 14 mph, and now I can't go over 24 mph when I want or need to (i.e., there's a good argument to be made for going faster and riding in a traffic lane rather than 20 mph on the side of a road).
      The bottom line on the assist levels is that they don't work worth a crap, at least not on the Kepler. Given a particular bike path, there's a magic combination of proper assist level and proper pedaling gear that will feel right.
      You want to feel like your pedaling, like your doing the work, but with magical results. Too much assist, and your speed will tend to be too much, and you'll feel like you're not really pedaling, like you're just making the pedals go around but there is no resistance. Too little assist, and you'll feel like you're going too slow and that you'll have to pedal harder than hell just to go a little bit faster.
      I don't know what the answer to this is, but the Kepler doesn't have it figured out. Maybe that's where a torque sensor would really have value, but I don't really know.

    One of my ebikes is the 26in Speedrid by Ancheer. With a couple upgrades its really tough to come anywhere near it for just over $1,000 before upgrades. It's completely underrated, its Marketed as a 500 watt, but if you take it apart it looks like a 750. The controller is marked 18 amps, but the display says it's pulling 1,040 Watts Peak( probably really 20 amps). It's got a real mountain bike frame better than most that you'll find, it's also got the newer style head tube so you can put one of those expensive suspension forks with the tapered steerer tube. It's completely unrestricted only tops out of 26 mph but, on a mountain bike trail at climbs like nothing I've ever seen before. A turbo levos definitely not going to keep u, on steep inclines. You literally can come to a dead stop in the middle of a huge incline and then just start pedaling again.
