Arrows Across America: Relive Aviation History in Microsoft Flight Simulator

- Pilots who flew with the aid of the Transcontinental Airway system, such as Charles Lindbergh, in the early days of aviation from the 1920s to the 1940s, could deliver air mail by navigating with concrete arrows pointing in the direction of the next beacon and or arrow. Prior to the advent of lighted airways, flight during the nighttime was not safe and nearly impossible. Routes formed by lighted beacons and concrete arrows across America made the transportation of mail faster than trains by allowing aircraft to safely fly at night.
Flying by lighted airways and painted arrows is now possible in Microsoft Flight Simulator thanks to the add-on "Arrows Across America" which is available for free at www.flightsim.to

Download Arrows Across America: flightsim.to/d/robcap/1926-airway-route-cam5
Use original aeronautical charts from the 1930s while flying lighted airways (go to bottom of page): www.dreamsmithphotos.com/arrow/airmail_routes/navigation_maps/maps_link.html
Now all we need are the RedWing 1935 USA sceneries
We are very interested to see how they are going to approach the beacons!
I am soooooooo looking forward to these.
Pretty neat! In Saginaw TX just north of Fort Worth Meecham and west south west of Hicks Airfield. There is a concrete arrow in a field (at least it was 10 years ago) I went to where the arrow was. As a note Bell Helicopter had an Assembly plant just east of that arrow. Glen Freeman created a website about little known and abandoned airports that is really good. Indexed by State a very good repository of airport history!😁🛫
The Arrows Across America add-on is spectacular. It is hard to imagine what it would have been like flying nearly 100 years ago in an open cockpit airplane navigating solely by lighted airway. Do you think they had NOTAMS for unlit towers when a beacon was inop? If they only had NOTAMs back then. Old and Abandoned Airfields is one of my favorite aviation websites. I frequent that site often. Dreamsmithphotos is another favorite site. They have loads of info on Arrows Across America but also old aeronautical charts dating back to the late 1920s.
@@thecorporatepilotdad I will have to check that site out
I've been following this mod for a while now, a really cool idea. We need more historic scenery. London Croydon is another good one
You are right. We do need more historic scenery. I only found out about this mod last night. This is a lot of fun and great to see the system work virtually. The Boeing 247 add-on has 4 course ranges that work which is also neat if you are into historical aviation and navigation.
I didn't know about this. Neat brief aviation history lesson. Seriously love the historical stuff within Flight Simulator.
There is a new version with more beacons coming soon. Aviation history is quite fascinating to me as well. Here is a more detailed history lesson on a video I made about lighted airways - Arrows Across America - The First Airways in the Sky

@@thecorporatepilotdad I watched that. Cool vid! Thanks for making it. It's amazing how far Aviation has come. I went though private pilot training 22 Years ago. Life changed and I didnt fly for the next 20 years. A year ago, I started Msfs... And started seeing these "Glass Cockpit" contraptions. Lol. It reignited the fire. Started reading my ancient text book. I emailed Rod Machado asking if much has changed from my 20 year old edition of the Private Pilot Handbook. He wrote back a typical Rod Machado humorous reply. I have the updated book now. Anyway, Amazing that we can experience historical aviation virtually now!
Thanks for this - good reason to dust off the ol’ Waco!
Have fun with it. For the best experience, find the link to old aeronautical charts in the description and follow along with the maps from the 30s. The numbers on the generator sheds match the numbers on the map for each location. I flew the Columbia River route to the west this evening and it’s neat to see Mt. Hood getting larger off in the distance.
Oh nice, was thinking about whether such an addon exists or that it could actually be rather easy to accomplish something alike. We need a foreign bearing addon next. Don't know the english word for foreign bearing... basically navigation by a controller who can get your position by radio signal and guide you to the destination or even talk you down during an approach.
Many years ago there was a method called DF Steer in which an aircraft's position could be found by transmitting over the radio. Better radar coverage, GPS, and ADS-B have eliminated the need for DF Steer and I believe this service is no longer available in the U.S.
What a great mod! :-) Thanks for highlighting!
Welcome. I found this mod yesterday and after trying it out a video had to be made to help spread the word about a nearly forgotten time in aviation.
@@thecorporatepilotdad I imediately wanted to follow the routes!!! Love the history of flight! Have you read 'Fate is the Hunter' some great stories of pre-war aviation, just as DC-3 etc started stretching out to make the early airline routes.
@@MattBarraud I have not but I do have that book in my computer bag and made it to page 50. It hasn't been touched in 2 years but everyone keeps telling me what a great book it is. I need to pick it up and just read it.
@@thecorporatepilotdad Yes I highly recommend it, too. You can add "North Star over my shoulder" which roughly covers the same time frame, but with Tyrone Power in the right seat! 😂
@@thecorporatepilotdad Yes, you do... It is also available on Audible, as an audiobook.
So cool! This must have been pretty hard work for the mod author!
Fortunately there are three of us that have been working on it but it has been a lot of hours! We have divided the work up between the research, creating the models and then building the routes.
@@richardblows5684 Very nice work on this. I'm glad to see your work getting highlighted by folks like TCPD who I know really appreciates it!
@@richardblows5684 thank you so much for your contributions to this community!!! 🙌🙌
how to install this Add-On
The file can be found on flightsim.to Download the file and place it in the community folder, if on PC. Currently, the add-on is not available for XBOX.
@@thecorporatepilotdad thx i have xbox
I have downloaded this to the community folder but cannot find it in the game....can you point me to a walk through on how to access these routes?@@thecorporatepilotdad
