    What an epic sequel!! I am loving the world building and all the mythology behind these stories. So interesting to see how Jack's character is evolving and how he deals with his love for his new friends and his love for freedom and survival. Enjoy :)

      I’m gonna level with you. The only after credits scene that means anything for future films is the after credit scene in the very next film (Pirates 3). Other than that they really aren’t important. And even the after credit scene in Pirates 3 won’t skew your watching experience if you didn’t watch it.

    not spoilers, just context:
    Jack was once a sailor for the East India trading company, and Cutler Beckett had ordered that jack transport some cargo on his ship "the Wicked Wench". turns out that cargo was one hundred slaves. jack refused and set the slaves free. in consequence, Beckett branded jack as a "pirate" for "stealing East India Trading company cargo" and burned Jacks ship "the Wicked Wench" at sea so it sank. Jack then made a deal with Davey Jones to raise the ship from the depths, so Jones made a bargain with Jack that in exchange for his soul, the ship would be raised from the depths and Jack could captain it for thirteen years, at the end of thirteen years, Jones would come to collect Jack and the ship. When the ship was raised, the hull was still blackened by the fire, so Jack renamed it "The Black Pearl". when jones said an equal price for jacks soul would be 100 souls, it was in reference to the 100 slaves Jack had freed originally that set the whole situation in motion.

    I think you misunderstood the love triangle. There isn’t one. The compass kept pointing to Jack when Elizabeth used it because Jack is the answer to getting Will back. She kissed him so she could distract and then shackle him so he would die. They showed Will seeing the kiss and left him believing that she wanted Jack and it broke his heart. But Elizabeth didn’t want anyone know that she killed Jack, so she said Jack elected to stay on the ship, not giving Will or anyone the truth.

      I don't know, as I understood it, she was never really in love with Jack, but it also wasn't JUST a game and the kiss a distraction. I think Jack embodied adventure and freedom and danger and Elizabeth was drawn to that, because she was in a phase of her life where she didn't know what exactly she wanted. You can see that she is frustrated and confused herself when the compass points to Jack, her expression is not a definitive "lmao never I know I don't love him, that must mean something else." With the kiss, she tasted what she was drawn to only to realize it was not what she wanted after all. I think it's complex and I'm not sure how to put it into words, especially since english is not my first language, but I think reducing her character and their relationship to just calculated games wouldn't do it justice, it was more complex.

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 4 місяці тому +5

      It is supposed to be a bit ambiguous. It is unclear whether she wants to be with Jack or rather be Jack (something that usually only shows up in gay content) or if she only wants to distract him...
      the time the compass locks on him her deepest desire could have been to find the person responsible for Will being on the Dutchman. If it had pointed anywhere else she had known that Will was responsible but it pointed straight at Jack.
      The only thing that is clear is that in the end she does make a decision against Jack.

    • @JCrushFitness
      @JCrushFitness 2 місяці тому +2

      Yeah, I think the compass point to jack to answer Norrington’s question to Elizabeth about how Will ended up on the Dutchman. Then, because Jack was flirting with her and Norrington says something about it she also interprets it differently and isn’t sure why it would point to him. Then on the island I’d say it was actually pointing to the heart, he was just on the other side of it, again confusing her.
      I do think Jacks words about her wanting adventure and freedom are true though, which has nothing to do with Jack in reality but again, is true enough that Elizabeth is confused.

    • @Jay-gurl
      @Jay-gurl Місяць тому

      It's pretty debatable and that's honestly what makes this film and the characters so interesting to rewatch and discuss.
      Elisabeth does love Will, yes. She is doing all of this to save him and be with him. But, whereas in the first film is was Will bonding with Jack and learning he is a pirate obsessed with treasure (Elisabeth) and needs to stand up for himself.
      Now, the focus is on Elisabeth and Jack. I doubt Elisabeth has ever had freedom like she has right now given she's a governors daughter and raised only to be a proper lady. Jack, now represents freedom, the sea and adventure and much like how Jack is obsessed with rum and a pirate life, Will is obsessed with treasure and now honoring his father, Elisabeth is now obsessed herself. She's obsessed with the thrive and Jacks character. She sees right through him and how he wants to be remembered in glory, even if it's for being a good person when he isn't thinking it's what he wants.
      Sexual tension is a thing even if two characters have no actual romantic feelings for another and that's all about one thing: chemistry. Elisabeth and Jack have it so easily that they are naturally drawn to another, like two halves of the same coin.
      Because for being the romantic leads, Elisabeth and Will don't actually have that much chemistry. In the next film, they are pretty separated emotionally and romantically because they no longer trust one another for a good half of the third film.
      So, well it is ambiguous at best if Elisabeth truly has romantic feelings for Jack in this film, she at the very least was drawn to him as a person. I mean, she was confused by the compass pointing at Jack well on the beach and asked why his compass didn't work because she was doubting her own feelings right up until seeing Will again.
      At the end of it all, I applauded the writers and actors for giving us good characters and connections if it can be debated like this

    • @LunaticKD1991
      @LunaticKD1991 8 місяців тому +31

      @@thecocoacouchI think she knew. A lot of people tend to misread that scene though because it points towards Jack after that little flirty moment while they completely overlook what Norrington asked Elizabeth if she never wondered how Will ended up on The Flying Dutchman combined with the fact that the compass points to what you want most and what you want most changes. There is a little bit of flirtation towards Jack but it's not to the extent that Elizabeth loves Will. It's more like toying with Jack and testing him but not actually trying to get with him. Jack is difficult to read for a lot of people especially Elizabeth because she thought he was a good man but his character is more complicated than that. He's a pirate but he does have good within him. Even at the end of this movie Elizabeth felt guilty because she was the one who resulted in Jack's death and while her kissing him was only used to distract Jack from what she was about to do she also felt guilty about that but she did it in order to save Will because the Kraken was after Jack and not the ship. It's easy to misread but if you go back and rewatch some of those scenes you'll notice what I've said. Like I said there is a bit of a flirtation her character has with Jack and Norrington but it's not to the extent that she loves Will.
      The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies are probably my favorite movie franchise because they're just so good and I'm glad to see other people reacting to them and seeing the awesomeness for themselves.
      Keep up the good work.

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 4 місяці тому +4

      It is supposed to be a bit ambiguous but any attraction that there is for Elizabeth is also ambiguous in itself. Does she want to be with Jack or does she basically want to be Jack. She was always fascinated with piracy and in the first movie she longed for the freedom that Jack represents.
      This is also why it seems so easy for her to adapt to this lifestyle where Will had struggled so much in the first one.

    "I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."
    Fun Fact: The movie was shot back-to-back with Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007).
    Location Location Fact: Tia Dalma's (Naomie Harris) swamp is a re-creation of the opening bayou scene in the ride in Disneyland, complete with fireflies.
    Practical Over CGI Fact: Stellan Skarsgård's character was the only member of the Flying Dutchman who was wearing make up. Stellan Skarsgård's makeup took four hours to apply.
    What Script Fact: The scene when Jack Sparrow calls Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) "fish face" and sings "I got a jar of dirt" to him, was unscripted and improvised by Johnny Depp, most of the reactions of the rest of the characters are real. While not ad-libbed, the scene where Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) kisses Jack Sparrow was actually left out of Orlando Bloom's script for a better reaction.
    CGI Over Practical Fact: To portray Jones on set, Bill Nighy wore a motion capture tracksuit and tracking dots on his face, which meant the animators at Industrial Light & Magic did not have to reshoot the scene in the studio without him, or on the motion capture stage. Several actors later admitted that it was often difficult to act against Nighy wearing the suit and dots on his face, and not burst into laughter.

    22:50 he actually *isn't* good with it, that's why he tried to trick Davy Jones into sending Will back, by pretending it would be worse for Will to married off to his girl and slowly come to (inevitably, in Jones's opinion) have his heart broken in the way Jones had. Jones saw through that, though, picked up on the fact that Jack cares what happens to Will, so Jones is trying to make him suffer with the thought that he has condemned Will. But Jack is just trying to buy time. The whole thing with rounding up people in Tortuga, with pretending to be fine that Will is on the Dutchman, it's all to throw Jones off and make him think Jack is just bargaining for a way to better his own circumstances. Jack's goal is to get a crew, resupply the ship, and get the chest. Once he has the chest, he can control Jones and make him set Will free, as well as call off the kraken and erase Jack's debt.

    • @thecocoacouch
      @thecocoacouch  8 місяців тому +6

      I think I half agree. Definitely changed my opinion. Perhaps he thought Will had the best chance of finding the key and ultimately would want to find the chest to barter for both him and Wills freedom. I think at this point Jack still sees Will as a means to an end but definitely doesn’t just “not care” about Will whatsoever. Also I think this makes it more satisfying in the third film when he finally puts Will first before his chance at immortality.

This movie doesn't put him in a good light but he's still my favourite character in this series. By the end of this movie I end up hating Elizabeth and Jack a little and am pretty much apathetic to Will and his plight. The Former Commodore, though? His story is just getting more interesting.

    6:40 - This is explained in the novelization, and there’s a deleted scene in which Becket and Sparrow talk about it. Since I know you’ve seen all three movies here I’ll talk about it. Basically, before Jack became a Pirate he was an honest sailor working for the East India Trading Company as a cargo merchant, captaining a ship called the Wicked Wench. One day he discovered that the cargo he was hauling was a hundred slaves. This horrified him, so he freed the slaves.
    Becket, upon finding out what Jack had done, was enraged. He branded Jack as a pirate for the crime of stealing his cargo and had Jack’s ship burned and sunk. Jack swam out and attempted to board his burning/sinking ship to rescue it, but was unsucessful and thus he went down with the ship. Davey Jones found him in this condition and the two struck a bargain; Jack would be able to remain a mortal in command of the Wicked Wench for thirteen years, at the end of which his soul would belong to Jones and he would become a member of the Flying Dutchman’s crew (Additionally; Jack’s soul was worth 100 souls because of the 100 slaves he’d freed).
    Jones raised the Wicked Wench from the depths, and with his magic it was able to stay afloat despite being charred and damaged, this magic is also why the ship seemed to make its own wind and was thus very fast. With the boat being charred black, Jack rechristened it the Black Pearl. He was in command of it for only two years before the mutiny.

    However, my brother in film, you must watch Hereditary if you haven’t seen it yet. In the dark. Alone. Trauma!

    13:42 You know for the longest time I too thought that, but I think through another reaction I found a comment pointing out that the reason they stop and look at each other is the point when they realise the drums have stopped and they need to hurry before they are checked up on, heard or are genuinely worried for Jack.
    But perhaps I should watch this movie again myself as I couldn't quite tell if that was the case through this reaction.

    At the beginning, because of the undead monkey, I think you should also watch the extra scenes after the credits. :P :P In all PotC movies. Love your reactions by the way, like always. edit: Someone actually said that to you ahaha...no I would really say that all the scenes should be watched.

    The thing with the compas, I don't belive that Elizabeth loved Jack (maybe she had a crush on him... I mean who doesn't😅) but the compas pointed to Jack because what he represents; freedom.
    Elizabeth wanted to know how it feels like to be as free as Jack, his lifestyle.... carelessness.
    At least that's what I believe.
    ...or/and at that moment on the ship, she wanted to know how Will ended up on the Dutchman.

    38:49 According to the screenwriters, in terms of pure swordfight, Will is the most skilled, Barbossa and Norrington second and evenly matched, with Jack falling third as in fact, the worst. 😂
    39:18 And is unknown where Elizabeth would fit, but she was taught by Will and she showed her skills quite well.

    Yeah your comments at the end are on point. Having Jack NOT be the main character made him stand out more - that was why he became the break out character. As the movies went on, he became more prominent and in 4/5 he was the main character and it was to the detriment of the character and the films as a whole. He was much better as the stand out third protagonist.

    46:44 So Barbossa came back ( I think ) due to the end credits scene of Pirates 1. The funny monkey stole a coin from the chest at the end and presumably gave the coin to Barbossa before he bled out. Either that, or its simply wacky Tia Dalma magic.
