  • Stanley Glacier is a beautiful glacier located in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada. The glacier is named after the famous Canadian geologist, J.B. Tyrrell's brother, George Stanley Tyrrell. The glacier is approximately 4.5 kilometers long, and its meltwater feeds into the Vermilion River.
A massive forest fire occurred in Kootenay National Park about a decade ago, in 2003. The fire, which was started by a lightning strike, burned more than 17,000 hectares of forest, including parts of the Stanley Glacier area.
The hike to Stanley Glacier begins with switchbacks that wind through a new growth forest, where visitors can see the contrast between the short, green trees and the scorched, taller trees. The first 4 kilometers of the trail have a gradual incline, and the terrain consists of a well-maintained, packed dirt path.
We embarked on a hiking trip towards the Stanley Glacier. As for the history of the glacier, it dates back to the last ice age, and its melting has caused significant changes to the landscape over time. However, when we reached the end of the designated path, we unfortunately got lost. We had to climb up from the loose rocks to get back on the right trail, which was a daunting and scary experience.
