- So how did John Addison compose the music to Murder, She Wrote? I haven't a clue!!!
But I can take you through the thought process by analyzing the structure of his music. Analyzing ... MURDER, SHE WROTE Enjoy, David Burt
One of the best, most complex, and (most importantly), most *memorable* TV themes ever written! :-) Such a rich, uplifting performance, especially considering that it clocks in at well under a minute! John Addison was brilliant in composing this.
Thank you, David, for this tutorial! :-D
Thank you Larke for your comment. I haven’t viewed that tutorial for a number of years, and since you brought it to my attention I took the opportunity for a revisit. I agree the theme is most memorable with a “simple” light hearted, happy go lucky bounce. However, when you delve into the heart of the work there is a whole lot going on that is highly sophisticated. Glad you enjoyed my analysis. .
Absolutely love the whole video, brilliantly detailed something that has had me guessing for years? Top job!
Thank you John. I’m pleased you enjoyed my tutorial.
I love this. Murder, She Wrote is my favorite TV Show. I remember when I would stay the night at my grandmas when I was younger (I'm 16) the TV would be on. Most of the time, it would be Murder, She Wrote. That's how I fell in love with Murder, She Wrote and Jessica (J.B.) Fletcher (she is so cute, I wish she was a real person)! I own Season 1 and 2.
I have never actually played the piano, so I know I should probably start with easier songs first, then work up to this one. I also hope to learn Edelweiss from Sound of Music. My brother has a piano, so hopefully he will let me use it.
It's so funny cause it's like everyone watched this with their grandmas.... including me 😂
I know this was posted 7 years ago but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Including little bits of history to my old fave classic. Appreciate it thank you, I’ll be saving this for when I’m much better at the piano 😂❤️
Happy you came across my tutorial on MURDER SHE WROTE. It was a fun song to analyze. You might enjoy viewing my tutorial on WHAT THE WORD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE. Good luck with your music endeavours.
i feel like the change of tone when shes flashing the light in dangerous situation is like, happy-go-lucky to "im gonna get ya" super sleuth mode, then winds back upward through entanglement and deception toward enlightenment and back to the comfort zone (but in a higher pitch) and ties it up with a bow with the very VERY end notes. Its a great theme song
Great song, fun to play. 😎
I just came across your page today. I haven’t played in about 20yrs and am looking forward to relearning. Your videos are very helpful.
I'm pleased you're getting back to playing.
Love it! Thanks, David. Great explanation. 👍🏻
Just enough music theory where we needed to know it; without the unnecessary which, often, bogs down these kinds of videos and confuses the audience.
I’d sit in your class any day of the week - and twice on Sunday. 😆 Thanks for taking on such a fun piece. Great job, again. Cheers.
Thank you Russ for your kind comments. Very much appreciated. 😎
Great hearing from you Caitlin. I use Murder, She Wrote, as a bedtime story. I go to sleep with a smile on my face. Oh, and Aidan Garrod, if you
reading this,. i do distant learning.so it is possible to have me as your teacher.
Great to hear from you Lluis. Glad you enjoyed my tutorial. It was fun putting it together. David
Oh, man! You ROCK for doing this! Thank you SO much!
Great little tune, and I still watch the reruns. Glad you enjoyed.
this is gold! i'll be praticing for the next weeks. Really apreciated this tuto :)
Thank you very much for sharing, since only small part played just heard, now I am very happy that there is a tutorial, it brings back very fond memories, thanks for teaching it so well, it's wonderful. Greetings from Chile
I'm pleased Polanka, that you enjoyed my tutorial on Murder She Wrote. If you click on the "Tutorial" tab my homepage: www.davidburt.com you'll find others I think you would enjoy watching. All the best.
Awesome video - thanks for sharing. It makes me kick myself again for never having taken a music theory class. I'm trying to transcribe Delerue's Day for Night to organ and I'm banging my head against the wall, but slowly making progress.
Very good maestro!.A very good tuition for someone like me that wouldn't know how to approach such a beatiful theme, otherwise.
darcut Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. It's always interesting to analyze what's happening musically.
The "old standard chord progression " starts about 6: 52 . This is the standard left hand to one version of "Chopsticks".
nice to meet you david, nice piano btw.
Watch out. this about to blow up from today's news. I know I'm relearning it RIP AL :(
RIP
Angela Lansbury was a personal favourite of mine. A true professional entertainer in every way. I’ve watched every episode of Murder She Wrote. She’ll be missed. Great music to relearn and add to your repertoire.
Is it possible you can play the Matlock theme song I've been trying to get that down for years! Thank You
Hi David, thanks for this tutorial..it was most enlightening... Could I ask if you have the sheet music for this? I'm more of a notes reader then an auditory learner.
Melissa Anne Tan Sorry Melissa Anne Tan. No notes, it just off the top of head.as I go through the process.

For those in a hurry to learn the tune, the melody proper starts at 2:19 , starting with the key of C major, and the the associated chords . Much as I admire your explanations, David, like many beginners in a hurry, that insight can wait until we can learn the basic melody, and the left hand accompaniment. But please do re-release a précis of your tutorial - it'd be very useful!
+I.L. Donaldson As I've already mentioned above, this was not really a tutorial, but more of a collection of ideas that might have been considered by the composer. . He is no longer with us, so we'll never know for sure. If you go back up on line and "Google"--- How to play the Theme from Murder She Wrote; there are all kinds of help out there for you. Just make sure you use the video setting.
David - Please ignore my previous rudeness, and TY for taking the time to reply. I had drunk a bit too much and this makes me impatient and aggressive. Apologies, and many thanks for your interesting and detailed analysis.
By the way, part of it, descending on the RH from upper G, in an arpeggio variation reminds me of The Belfast Hornpipe.
Somewhere on UA-cam there is a leprechaun in a green shirt, playing it on an open upright piano, in B Flat
