It's distressing to hear 8 catching on that the person he's talking to (War) is strangely familiar, but not in a comforting way, like he can tell there's a darkness to him guiding all he does - a darkness which he senses they share, but he hasn't fully given himself over to it... yet.

Not to mention that - when he regenerated from Seven - he promised to break from the actions/decisions that separated him his friends and family. Three, Four and Five were unwillingly involved with the conflict that would (eventually) lead to the Time War - Six was more willing to cooperate but his rebellious nature and lack of tact kept him from going as far as Seven would - because Seven, after Ace left, committed himself fully to try and prevent the multiple cold wars from turning into a full war
      Whatever the cost
Yet - as good as a chess master as Seven was - all his good intentions kept resulting in worse and worse results that only heightened the potential for conflict
The Time Lord's manipulating Seven (and the Master) which led to him nearly dying before Regeneration kicked in (as covered by Big Finish in the Gallifrey audio series) made him turn his back on them - denounce his actions as Seven (as well as the Time Lord's machinations) reasoning that the two almighty races (the Daleks and the Time Lords) would destroy each other no matter what he did and that he was doing more harm than good
Only for the entire multiverse to end up caught in the crossfire - and, even then, he just tried to help - tried to staunch the bleeding - douse the fires the two godlike factions were starting across all of reality
But it wasn't enough - the War Doctor is the culminating failure of every other Doctor's attempt to be a better person - a good person
The realization of every Doctor - on one very bad day - that, sometimes, being the Doctor just isn't enough... and sometimes, on a bad day... ... ...
      Nobody lives

Arguably the most tragic take on a multi Doctor meet-up.

The War Doctor genuinely sounds close to tears when Eighth comes out with "There's always hope!"

This entire conversation drives a figurative, dull, rusty kitchen knife through my heart, then twists it.

John Carley is the best impressionist in the world, but even he has limits. 0:15 sounded like Grover XD

It reminds me of Odo from DS9 in a way.

The War Doctor sounds more like Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine…

That's it - I knew it was a Trek character but I couldn't place who (pun not intended)

Jonathan does a great job emulating the voice, but man, the acting just isn't there...

Yeah, problem is he’s slipping into the more older Hurt voice half the time too.
It’s my problem wirh Jon Culshaw. Great impressions but they sound a bit more one note. Like he nails Pertwee and Courtney’s more loud theatrical approach but not emotion

The John Hurt impression sounds like an old drunk guy who's always sitting in the local Pub. Has an opinion on everything but no one really cares.

I think these Doctor interactions with another incarnations are becoming tiresome and pointless. I've never liked the concept of the War Doctor, shoe horned in-between 8th & 9th. No disrespect to the late John Hurt but it just seemed ridiculous. I'm sure 8 would have been perfect for the Time War story line eventually becoming Eccleson and the perfect story arc.

you might want to check out "idw: the forgotten" comic it has an interesting take on how the 8th doctor would win the time war...along with a few other surprises

      No. 8 or 9 wouldn't work.

I disagree, anything can work in fiction given the right enthusiasm for making a story work...& Actors given decent scripts to work with.

@@dtuk22 8 would've been massively out of character & 9 would not have made sense from a continuity stand-point.
In Rose, The Doctor sees his reflection in a mirror, and behaves as if he's just regenerated and is just seeing himself for the first time.
THE DOCTOR: Ah, could've been worse. Look at the ears.
Also, Eccleston said that when he read the script for the 50th anniversary, he felt that it was just him, Tennant & Smith riffing off the fact that they were The Doctor. He didn't feel the narrative was strong enough for his Doctor, mostly because when the show was being celebrated, he took a lot of abuse from the press.
Because of that, he didn't want to come back & he thought John Hurt's War Doctor added to the canon in a way that Chris' Ninth Doctor would not. He further said he's not a fan of Multi-Doctor stories, considering Nine to be, in his words, "a one-man band".

No 8 would have been perfectly in character! He is the most ruthless incarnation beside Seven and has flat out tortured and murdered people before and has committed enough genocide for a lethal drinking game
