As the ’80s give way to the ’90s, 16-bit technology arrives and video games become more vivid and more dynamic than ever before. A generation of young composers who grew up inspired by the game music of the previous generation take video game music to new heights, with the new systems allowing for game music to sound more cinematic than ever before. At the same time, video games are experiencing a boom across the globe thanks to titles like Street Fighter 2 which ensured that the music of composer Yoko Shimomura was blaring out of news agents, fish and chips shops, and - of course - arcades the world over.

i think i'm in love with yoko shimomura
Yoko Shimomura is my favorite video game soundtrack composer, everything she makes sounds amazing and different.
A note from the Producer/Director Nick Dwyer, concerning 4:17:
"It was actually this track from the PC - Engine (Turbo Grafix in the States) that was what inspired me to make Diggin' In The Carts. I had been digging through old game soundtracks in a store called Super Potato in Akihabara in Tokyo looking for old Japanese games to sample. That's when I found this. Later that evening whilst listening to this track, loud, looking out from the 30th floor of my hotel seeing Tokyo at night - I had a moment where I realised I had to make the documentary. We actually re-created what I saw that night in the third Episode when we play this track, it was so important to me that we had that scene in there."

Since Digging in the Carts' Launch, I rewatch the episodes everytime I remember them (usually when I eat japanese food). I love this so much... It's one of the best documentaries EVER MADE. I mean, in all aspects, it's so much love in this documentaries... The ones who made the songs made them with so much love, and the one who made this documentary made it with so much love too... I always feel amazed, I feel beauty.

It's ridiculous and corny for me to even admit this, but I personally get a bit emotional when watching this documentary myself. Coming back to it every 6 months or so, I can't help but appreciate the amount of care that the team put into this documentary, for such an underappreciated art form that I myself have been inspired by throughout my entire life. Much love to those with a refined taste in this art form. I hope to be able to create something for people to enjoy as much as Diggin in the Carts.
I did not know Yoko did the soundtrack for Street Fighter! She's my favorite composer since she's done the entire Kingdom Hearts soundtrack and Mario RPG!

Yeah I know, it was a great docu. Western vgms composers were just as influential in my book, was just hoping for a quick shout out or something.
That's cute but you're wrong. David Wise (which I very much respect) was the one being influenced by these composers at the time. It's not to say Dave wasn't influential, he very much is/was...but this documentary is talking about the ROOTS of video game music, before Wise's time. Plus dude, take that cry baby shit outta here. Where is Koji Kondo in this documentary? No one cries about that. Nick and Tu couldn't get everyone they wanted bro. Learn the history of this craft, and realize where Wise stands in it...because it wasn't at the beginning my friend.

Yuko Shimomura did a great job for the SF2 soundtrack, but the ken's theme is a rip off from Cheap Trick - Mighty Wings on the Top Gun soundtrack
Decent referance, harold Faltermeyer is an amazing musician. Must add this maybe she impressed with the riff but she improvised and wrote an amazing solo on it.
