BIG OREGON BLACKTAIL DEER ENCOUNTER & LAST MINUTE ARCHERY KILL

  • After passing up multiple small bucks, and never quite getting a shot opportunity on one stud buck early on, Wyatt was able to fill his late season western Oregon archery tag. The middle portion of the season was slow, and finals at Oregon State took him out of the stand for a few days, but Wyatt's buck capped off an extremely exciting 2016 hunting season.

    Great work - it was obvious the high-quality prep, patience, and execution that went into this hunt. Beyond that, the video and audio was excellent...a real joy to watch.

    I have been following your videos for awhile now. Ive watched this video and your opening morning video (the shaky guy cracks me up everytime), probably about 10-15 times each. I love blacktail so much and you guys have some of the best blacktail footage I have found. Hoping you guys got just as good as footage this year with all those blacktail you guys killed! Looking forward to this years videos! Hoping your guys' channel blows up sometime soon!!

      Haha thanks! We love re-watching the footage of the deer, they are very entertaining and beautiful animals. Glad you've enjoyed the videos as much we love filming and making them. We got footage of every kill this year, and we were also able to get a lot of fun supplemental footage again as well. Whether it will be as entertaining as some of last years or not to others, I'm not sure, but we think it is! Thanks again for watching, and appreciate the comment!

    Thanks for posting some superb blacktail deer video. Your patience through tens of hours in the tree stand is impressive, and you were rewarded with a great deer. Lots of questions for you...I hope you have time to answer.
    1. Your video shows rut activity in late season archery. Is this the 2nd rut in early December?
    2. What did it take to find such an area? Is this a "funnel" area for deer traveling between feed areas? How/why are deer using the area where you set up?
    3. Are you using scent attractants or any other method to attract bucks?
    Hate to be the annoying guy who asks lots of questions. You've obviously got some knowledge about hunting blacktails and I'm struggling with these ghosts.

    • @AgainstTheWindOutdoors
      @AgainstTheWindOutdoors  7 років тому +1

      Thanks! Most of the footage was filmed throughout November during the first couple weeks. I honestly wish I could give you a more detailed answer as to how we found the area but, the truth is we've just put in lots of time and done lots of exploring. Rather cliche answer, I know, but it's true. We hunt familiar stands when there's activity, but we also move around a lot trying to find new areas during the rut. Every year is tough and presents new challenges, so it's hard to pinpoint anything specific, other than time put in, as an ingredient to success... and even then it's hard to come by. As I believe was mentioned in the end, he put in nearly 100 hours in the stand sitting during the season. While many days had action like what you see in the video, many did not. All of the buck activity seen was natural rutting activity, as we don't usually use scent attractants. I wish I could share some more specific knowledge, but it seems blacktail routinely year-after-year prove how little we actually know. Appreciate the comment, and wish you the best of luck to you this upcoming season, let us know how you do!

    • @freitag314
      @freitag314 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for your honest and detailed response. And I think you are right about blacktails, there is no easy answer. That's why I am so impressed with your videos and appreciative that you posted them on the web.
      I too have spent considerable time in a tree stand. It's so rewarding to watch these deer and not be noticed, even when they are down wind of my stand. After two blunders on my part and seven years of hunting, I connected on my first buck in 2015 at ten yards. I am HOOKED on hunting these deer. Too much fun.
      One more question. Does late archery in Oregon overlap the early November rut? I am up in WA where archery runs all of September and then Thanksgiving through December in most western units.

    • @AgainstTheWindOutdoors
      @AgainstTheWindOutdoors  7 років тому

      No problem at all! Late archery usually overlaps with the rut, but it varies year-to-year and area-to-area when exactly. The seasons here in Oregon are near identical to yours it sounds like; and late season is always the most fun!

I have a ton of respect to you for finding a spot this active. Do you mind sharing what unit you were hunting in, or at least what region? Congrats on a successful hunt!

    Then the seasons over and I’ve shot nothing...
    Come to think of it.
    I suck.
    But in all seriousness beauty little buck way to go.

      Against The Wind Outdoors , living in Idaho now, finding that , mule deer are by far the hardest big game I've ever archery hunted,
      Lived in Minnesota for a while shot a bunch of whitetails, Oregon, quite a few blacktails, and Roosevelt elk, all archery , think I'm gonna try for my first rocky Mnt elk, this year, havnt been able to draw a tag where I want to hunt them yet , but this year I'm just gonna try an open elk hunt , ALL archery, havnt rifle hunted since I got my first bow , at the age of 19.
      Witch I will say was in the 80s lol .

      Planing a trip out there for an elk hunt . In 2019 , how do you get a Wayhauser , permit ? When I grew up there it was all crown property no gates and you could just hunt anywhere , When I was there last , gates everywhere. Do they give you a key and what's the cost if you don't mind me asking?But I really need to know how to get one where I want to hunt there is a gate now . But I figured you could just hike in . I guess not ?

    Awesome buck! Have yet to get my first. Have been rifle hunting for a while with not to much luck because the season is so short and I can only hunt like 2 days because of school. This year I think I'm going to try bow hunting for blacktail because the season is longer. What bows would you recommend? Want to spend around 600 or so.

    • @AgainstTheWindOutdoors
      @AgainstTheWindOutdoors  5 років тому +1

      Hopefully you can get one soon! Definitely give archery season a try if you're considering it, it's a blast if you hit it at the right time. As to getting a bow, would just recommend you find a reputable pro shop, let them know your budget, and go from there based on their recommendations.

    Are you hunting near the timber lines of clear cuts but back in the timber? Or are you finding spots deeper in where there's lots of sign and trails? Also, are you seeing many deer in areas where elk are?

    • @AgainstTheWindOutdoors
      @AgainstTheWindOutdoors  5 років тому

      Yes to all of the above haha! It just depends on the area we're hunting and what we've seen for activity in that specific area.
