Ahhh, you covered these pencils too. Center punches I'm spoiled with the automatic Sterrett A5 and whatever the smaller one is (4?) Love those things. They're self centering but I can live with that. Matched them with two Sterrett manual center punches.
I had 183 orders on Amazon between work and personal this year (so far, lol). I just added your general Amazon link to the one I click and shop on almost everyday cuz your channel rocks!!
I like a 2mm lead holder; works great. 2mm lead/graphite is basically the center of a normal pencil without the wood. They can be sharpened to a nice point.
Hi James, I’m a DIY 🇨🇦 newbie and learning a lot from your channel! I’d like to help out but you’d have too create a canadien link for that I’d gladly help out when I can! Keep those cool tutorials, which tools & tips, & small 18x14 shop tips 😉 coming!
Great video, and I'll surely be picking up a few of these tools myself! Just a quick note on proper use of the Roto Tape Compass. You should make sure you're only holding the pin and not the whole body of the tape, like you were at 8:10. Restricting the natural motion of the body changes the point of rotation (and therefore the center of the arc) from the metal pin to the the area of the body where the tape exits. This will throw off your radius as you'll lose a couple inches from what you measured out on the tape. Just best to always focus all your pressure only on the metal point and let everything rotate around it the way it was designed. That being said, this is the first time I have ever heard of that tool, and I love it! Ingenious! Thanks again for all the content you put out; it's immensely helpful and informative.
@@StumpyNubs it wasn't a criticism, I just noticed that during the one clip you were holding the entire body of the mechanism, which DOES absolutely create a completely different arc than if you were only securing the pin. You showed it correctly in some other clips, but during the time stamp I linked, that arc would travel along a completely different path than if you were only holding the pin, because you change the pivot point, and therefore reduce the radius. Look at the difference between what you did at 8:10 vs 8:20.
All booked marked up Stumpy, hope this helps your channel, many of us regular views are massively appreciated of your channel. I’ve been with you since the early days and I’m so appreciate of all your advice. It’s helped me massively within my Joinery work. Keep up your amazing videos buddy
For some time now, I have had Amazon bookmarks in my browser favorites for you, Jay Bates and Samurai Carpenter and I buy a lot of stuff - I think the only downside is that if you normally do Amazon in a away that benefits a charity, you cannot do both. So, I alternate who to benefit. Love your stuff and it appears you have stepped up frequency - thank you for that.
Enjoyed the video as usual. I do have a couple of comments regarding the saw set up measurement device. First, it appeared that the reading stayed pretty much constant until the gage got to the middle of the blade and then most of the deviation showed up on the back side. Is it possible the blade was a bit warped? Second, it looked like you were using a saw stop saw and I would be very interested in seeing a detailed video of how to make adjustments to the blade alignment and blade tilt stops on this saw. Are you aware of any such videos? I know the manual is very complete, but like many, I’m more of a visual learner.
Hi James. Have really enjoyed your videos. Hope your fingers continue to heal nicely. Tried the link to the Rockler Router Table. It says link is not active. Are they no longer a sponsor?
Hi James, I’ve only recently come across your vids. I think they’re great. I’m an occasional woodworker, so anything that saves me time and increases accuracy, when I’m in the shop is much appreciated. Anywho, I live outside the US and I search those websites for your recommended tools - for shipping & tax reasons - so, you might not receive a little something from those companies that sell those tools 🙁. That being said, keep up the good work 👏
Fell in love with the Harvey router table attached to the Harvey table saw that you espoused in another video. The one you showed in this video doesn`t hold a candle to it. Your thoughts?
I've been using the super bar for many years now as well as the master plate, which is a precisely ground and flattened plate that goes in place of the sawblade and works with the super bar. It's everything it says it is and I've kept my saw setup within a thousandth of an inch, checking it periodically. One important thing I noticed is the mobile base was causing my saw to get knocked out by 3-5 thousand every 3 or so months. This went on for a few years until I got sick of it, got rid of the mobile base and set the saw on concrete and leveled it. I've since checked it and it hasn't budged at all, in several years! Great tool and it set me straight on mobile bases on tablesaws. It always makes me cringe when I see some UA-camr put their saw on a mobile base so they can wheel it around the shop! I'm really surprised this topic hasn't come up. BTW my shop is a small one car garage and yeah it's forced me to accept the fact that my large cabinet saw is there to stay.
James, if I am seeing correctly, you also have a router wing on your SawStop. If I am right, will you be dropping that wing and replacing it with your Rockler router table? I am looking at purchasing the SawStop to replace my aging Craftsman table saw, and of course I am looking at all the attachments. Since my shop is a smallish 2 car garage, I want to reduce my tool footprint as much as possible. I have drooled over Rockler's and Wood Pecker's router tables and lifts, so hearing your review of Rockler's lift is helpful.
I am removing the long black wing and replacing it with two Rockler router table tops. One for my Rockler router lift, the other for my Ready2Rout computerized lift. However, I have the ICS Sawstop, which is deeper than a typical saw (more distance between front and back rails.) That makes a difference with the Rockler router table top, as you will see when that video comes out in a couple weeks.
James, do you know anything about the SawStop router wing and lift, and can you give an opinion about which is better? Or at least why you chose Rockler over SawStop? This might be something you already have planned for discussion in the upcoming video. If so, I can be patient.
Too funny about the pencil. I noticed it right away from earlier videos. I’ve used them for a couple years and love them... so does my son who is constantly trying to borrow it.
I've been using the Pentel Graphgear 500 0.5mm for years, didn't know about that retractable point feature of the 1000. Thanks for that, I'll check it out.
Really looking forward to the upcoming video on Rockler router table adapted to table saw rails! I was just about ready to pull the trigger on a Bench Dog kit to do just that. Now, I want to see your video before I do that! Thanks! :-)
Another informative video James. Thanks. How hard is it to get the point of the roto tape compass in the right place to start scribing a circle for example?
I just picked one up a few days ago, wish they would knurl the top too. I find it a little slippery when hanging onto the very end to clip it to my pocket.
I use zebra delguard which has a clever lead supporting mechanism that ensures that the lead doesn't break when 'writing'. This is especially useful if marking wood with bumps or valleys in that would normally snap your .5 lead. Highly recommended so James.. find one on Amazon and get that affiliate link sorted ;)
Hey James, great video as always, thank you for all your hard work. A small aside, could you ask amazon to give you an affiliate link for the Australian site as well please? Our stupid greedy government decided it wasn’t stealing enough money from us so chose to block amazon to only amazon’s Australian site only. It recently lifted the ban after a massive uproar and we can now use other sites but still have to pay gst on all purchases and a lot of sites now won’t deliver to us down here because of it. It’s really a pain and I would love to know you got something back for all the hard work you and your dad do for us. You, Rob Cosman and Matt Cremona would be the 3 teachers I have learnt the most from in the last 5 years and I am extremely grateful. I truly am a better woodworker because of you and now, to add to my humble cabinet and box making work, I have expanded out to beginning to make wooden clocks, aiming for grandfather clocks in the near future with all wooden gears and cases. I know that for some, the USA is the center of the world but you should include affiliate link to Amazon UK, CA, FR and other countries. As from canuckistan, I would definitely use it.
Love your videos. Always something new to find. I wish to point out a slight error (at least I believe it's an error). In the part about the gauge for checking blade alignment I believe you should have rotated the blade front to back so the indicator is checking the same point on the blade instead of how you showed it. Sorry to be that guy, but I think it's an important point. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
That's a ridge carbide blade. It's dead flat. Sure, I could have explained how less expensive blades should be measured from a single point so slight variances in flatness won't affect the reading. But we have to move quickly in these Cool Tools videos. They aren't meant to be tutorials.
Just a suggestion I'm Canadian and most of these do not ship to Canada or the cost is prohibitive. Is it possible for Amazon or others to add Canadian links for your page so that we also could help support you?
Hi James, I thought when you check for runout on the saw, that you're supposed to measure off the same tooth on the blade vs sliding across the blade as you did. Aren't you risking measuring the blade this way instead of the table? Thanks.
You can't place the point of the gauge like this on a tooth because the side of the tooth is tapered, unless you were absolutely precise in your placement, it will have a significant affect on the reading. You can place it on the saw plate and rotate the blade, but this is not really a full tutorial. It's more about the tool itself.
James, I see the the 3 links for Rockler, iGaging and Master Gage however I don't see the one for Amazon other than for the 3 specific to products. Please educate me.
I don't buy many tools at all but I would be happy to support you on Patreon. Also, Rockler doesn't ship worldwide and the Amazon links don't work on different Amazon sites around the world, but I bet more than half of your UA-cam views come from outside the US?
Giacomo Guilizzoni I was thinking the same thing. I live in Canada and many times I can't order or it ends up costing me way for shipping. I always check first before I order though because these videos are excellent and have helped me exponentially! Thank you!
OK, I figured out another way. Use the link above for one of the amazon products, eg. Self-Centering Punch: amzn.to/2QvbcrC and go to Amazon and save the link to your desktop. This will open the self centering punch on Amazon and you can move on from there, but Stumpy should get the credit.
Love your channel. But it is not good for my wallet :) Last time I ended up with 4 new sawblades ha ha ha. They work amazing by the way. So will be picking up a few more tools via your links. That is the least I can do for these top notch videos. Keep em coming. TR
As usuall James good tool suggestions and tips i and many of my Coworkers got used to. Using the pretty inexpensive Bic plastic mechanical pencils but i Do like the features in the one you pointed out and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do that upgrade since the mechanical pencil is one of the best tools for Woodworking IMO the center punch is pretty slick ive aquired. A fair amount of self centering drill bits over the years but. Do get tired of them jamming up with debris as i find it pretty. Frustrating. To have one i paid almost 50 bucks for not work very well ?
FYI, phenolic is not acrylic. Phenolic is ...wait for it ...phenolic! A thermoset polymer, most often made int to very hard boards (like printed circuit boards) by forming a laminate of layers of uncured phenolic and a fabric like linen, cotton, even paper, then it is pressed at very high pressure and a temperature that will cause the liquid to set and harden. It is good stuff to be sure, very chemical resistant, hard, machinable, does not soften when heated, relatively inexpensive, not limited in thickness like thermoplastic polymers.. I am not sure if it takes a finish well. I have never seen it painted. They definitively press it with different colors.
For convenience and security reasons I use the amazon mobil app exclusively, unfortunately there is no way to currently open affiliate links in the amazon app. Amazon really needs to correct this, but they won’t do it without affiliates like you requesting it.
If you wish to buy from an affiliate often, consider getting a separate credit card. When you want to buy a 30 dollar item, transfer 30 dollars into it, but keep it empty the rest of the time.
Doug, the arbor itself can be true in run-out, but if the blade still measures a difference front to back (and the blade is flat) it means the motor/arbor shaft is skewed and there's an adjustment on the saw that you need to make to bring the assembly back to being "straight" front to back. Hope this helps.
Doug, it depends. If it’s a cheap blade, trash it and invest in a good one. James likes Ridge Carbide, I like Forrest and Freud. If it is a good blade and out of warranty, there are places that you can send your blade to for resharpening that will also flatten your blade. Companies like Forrest do this including for blades they do not make; there are others too. An easy search on the internet will get you there. Hope this helps!
Did you check the run out of the saw body before you started making adjustments to your saw? You didn't show doing so in the video. If your saw blade has run out you're just wasting your time making adjustments.
@@StumpyNubs sorry, I meant to say saw blade body that you're referencing to. Just seems to me that it would be something you'd want to point out... after all you bothered to check and demonstrate the run out in your arbor flange.
I don't appreciate the length of your affiliate link advertisement. By all means ask for support but cut down the length. I didn't come here to listen to commercials.
This is the only details I could find for the superbar........

Turns out Amazon won't let me ask you to bookmark the link. So i removed it.
@@StumpyNubs does that mean you can include it below a future video without asking us to bookmark it?
As usuall James good tool suggestions and tips i and many of my Coworkers got used to. Using the pretty inexpensive Bic plastic mechanical pencils but i Do like the features in the one you pointed out and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do that upgrade since the mechanical pencil is one of the best tools for Woodworking IMO the center punch is pretty slick ive aquired. A fair amount of self centering drill bits over the years but. Do get tired of them jamming up with debris as i find it pretty. Frustrating. To have one i paid almost 50 bucks for not work very well ?
Very interesting, enjoyed it
FYI, phenolic is not acrylic.
Have you got an affiliate link to UK Amazon. I spend shit loads with them 😂🇬🇧 Love ur channel and all the best from Manchester
If I follow the link and add to my wish list, and someone else buys off my wish list, do you get credit?
I don't think so.

Hola, ¿link a Amazon México?

There's an error in your router lift link.

The thickness Gage doesn't go thick enough.
Your Rockler links no longer work.
So what do you do after you find out your arbor is fine but your blade isn't?
That's a Ridge Carbide blade. It's flat.
Do you own any hand planes or chisels? Asking for a friend. :)
You want durable? Use a regular pencil :)
Do you really not know why a woodworker would prefer a mechanical pencil, or are you trolling?
That back wall is getting bigger and bigger ....

ROUTER LIFT LINK DOES NOT WORK.
Did you check the run out of the saw body before you started making adjustments to your saw? You didn't show doing so in the video. If your saw blade has run out you're just wasting your time making adjustments.
Yes I did. This isn't a tutorial about all the steps required to align a saw. It's about the tool itself.
@@StumpyNubs sorry, I meant to say saw blade body that you're referencing to. Just seems to me that it would be something you'd want to point out... after all you bothered to check and demonstrate the run out in your arbor flange.
""A link below this video". I've never found the links. Tel me where to look.
On a computer you have to click on "show more". If you're on a tablet or a phone, click the little arrow below the video.
Oooooo
at what point can we start calling you "Hollywood"?
I don't appreciate the length of your affiliate link advertisement. By all means ask for support but cut down the length. I didn't come here to listen to commercials.
I'm sorry to take 20 seconds of your time in exchange for over 400 free videos so far.
