Le Mans (1971) ages like fine wine. Le Mans depicts a fictional 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race starring Steve McQueen and directed by Lee H. Katzin. It features actual footage captured during the 1970 race held the previous June.
There is barely any story or script, it is more an film / documentary about car racing. Instead of Ford against Ferrari, this time it is the rivalry of Porsche vs Ferrari. (Porsche 917 vs Ferrari 512)

If only Steve McQueen's LE MANS had this kind of editing, they could've made it a hit!
My late friend and McQueen's friend and business partner Robert L. Relyea, fell out on this picture... even the original iconic director John Sturges who made McQueen a superstar on THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and THE GREAT ESCAPE, even they had enough of the nightmare shoot and star/producer tantrums.
Relyea famed for being an assistant director/unit manager on Sturges' films, also did the same on JAILHOUSE ROCK, THE ALAMO, WEST SIDE STORY and was executive producer on BULLITT.
Fast quick cuts were still in their infancy when LE MANS was made, although the iconic racing movie GRAND PRIX had great split-screen editing. LE MANS had gone way over budget and was out of control, so the studio took over and just hired a TV director to finish it.
Today's regular cars can go the speeds of LE MANS, and their death rates on regular roads are much. much higher than any racetrack and they kill even more drivers and pedestrians!
Good TRAILER presentation... if only movies were as good as many of their trailers!

If it's just for pure driving scenes and how it all feels like real racedrivers and real racing this is still better than Ford vs Ferrari. The later is the better movie and it's great, but Le Mans is still the real deal.

The thing I'll grant Ford v Ferrari has over Le Mans is that it does a better job capturing what it's like to drive at night in the race. Not enough was done in the 1970 film to show that.
@@Rhubba Likely because filming in the dark is a fairly tricky task, especially for a movie made before digital gamma correction.

I would watch this movie if I had a copy of it. It was done better than Ford vs Ferrari. Less drama no cgi and it was filmed at the actual track durring the race. Ford vs Ferrari was a good movie, but Steve McQueen did a better job.

The best Le Mans movie ever made. The racing scenes are just pure gold not like the CGI fast and furious wank of FvF...
You do know that FvF was shot practically with VFX only used in backgrounds or the weather, not the driving itself.

Watch the behind the scenes dude, most of the stunts were real. Minimum CGI.

Great job editing the trailer to make it seem less like a film from the 70's; my only gripe is that when Eric Schtaller tells Delaney to be careful. you should have ended with McQueen telling him: "Now, don't be a pain in the ass Eric!", the cut to the girl holding her ears in didn't work as well in my opinion. But everything else; superb.

Perhaps because my native language is not English and it didn't sound that funny or important, ... no idea. Anyway, for me it was important that most attention went to the cars and the sound of the engines, that's why that cut with the woman with her hands over her ears.

I saw the la mans in the early 70s ..I was 10years old..I'm pushing 58 January 21 2020...there will not another racing Move like this.. ! I saw the move Ford vs Ferrari...👎 ...the Ferrari 512s was awesome...! I like the starting and the last 3min into the last race pushing there cars to the limit....my most favorite car is the Ferrari 512s...la mans awesome Move today...! Steve mcqueen and the Ferrari 512s it was awesome! I will always love Ferrari 512s
