“The Portal: The Seen, Inner, and Unseen Worlds” by the artist Jewel
While we waited for our experience to begin we could see some of what was to come through the glass dome of the museum!
The Portal Experience begins with a seven foot hologram of Jewel who welcomes you by explaining her concept of the three spheres- the seen, inner, and unseen worlds. She sings beautifully, and there are spiritual images of Jewel with nature. Next is a viewing of artwork by Jewel herself. I admit I had no idea of her talent in this field! I’m an artist myself, and both her cast lucite piece “Chill” and her oil on aluminum painting “Double Helix” impressed me very much. Then there is a self guided art walk through the Contemporary Art section of the museum. There are interactive videos throughout where Jewel discusses how various pieces of art touch her and are personally meaningful to her. The experience culminates in an exciting 200 drone show over the central pond of Crystal Bridges Museum!
If you are interested, there is also what is described as a “curated meal” by “a team of culinary artists” - a “seated dinner” with “three handcrafted courses” inspired by the spheres with “curated wine pairings” which we did not attend.

High quality headphones were provided for the drone show. They were lighted and became part of the experience. The accompanying sound track was inspiring! It was both spoken word and music by Jewel, as well as sounds from nature, children, and urban life. Jewel leads the participants through deep breathing and sets a serene tone with her beautiful singing and sounds. The sounds are only available through the headsets, so when listening back to the live video I was so surprised to hear what was going on without them. The 200 drones buzzed above like bees! I will include a section without music to illustrate this. I can’t include the actual Portal music as it was provided only through the headsets and is copyrighted.
