  • This is a brand new Briggs and Stratton PP20 Whole House Generator. 20kw and connected via a Symphony II transfer switch to run an entire 200amp service panel. Connected to Natural Gas this was part of my new home construction which made things really easy. I was surprised by how quiet it was even though it was running at low speed. Anyway, this is just the first start up and run of the new generator. Took a bit of time to get the gas flowing. It automatically does 6 start attempts with a starter rest period in between attempts. In my first run of this generator, it started on start attempt number 4. So far very impressed with the quality and easy of operation.

    For those DIY people, the building code allows installation based on the manufactures fire rating of >18" from a STRUCTURE (NOT ALL Generators have this rating, please check), we like 24" min. just in case we need to work on it in the future. The 18" rule applies as long as there are no openings within 5 feet in any direction and or angle. This gentleman's install is correct as those windows cant open, always watch out for ANY OPENING... i.e. HVAC intake/exhaust and dryer vents. Also, AHJ (inspector) is your friend and has the final say in your area. One last note asked... We are a dealer for multiple brands. At 5/2023, you CAN NOT BEAT Briggs Warranty as they offer a 10-year above their standard 6-year. As for function, yes there are subtle differences between the manufacturers but all the big players are effectively the same. I will add that B&S transfer switch technology is the best as it allows most installs to utilize a much smaller generator without brownout issues with the Symphony system. My 2 cents...

    Planning is always key, nice work thinking about the future installation. my input is that you please check that flexible gas line. That is most likely not UL listed for a generator, that is for appliances and you risk a fire as it can crack from repeated vibration in time, do not use it unless it is listed for its use, please check. 2nd item on the gas install, the regulator I see is primary to the meter please verify that the secondary W.C. is no higher than 7". Easy way would be to check at the "T" you left yourself back at the meter, make yourself a 1/4 npt reducer and check, if your blowout your internal regulator you will void your warranty.

    So we are located in south central Texas and just went through an ice storm that wiped out our power for 3 days. Downed trees and power lines. Being on a well we were also without water. We have and use natural gas. Was looking at B&S, Kohler, Cummins and Champion whole house systems. I like that B&S has a 26KW air cooled with the 10 year warranty and Symphony II mgmt system. Any regrets on your B&S purchase?. I submitted onsite requests for those manufactures last week and so far B&S was the only one to respond and they did so within seconds of me hitting the submit button.

      So far it's been really good. The main thing you need to look for is local support. Mine is really good here for B&S so that was a big factor. The 26kw would be a great option. Just make sure to check that your gas supply can keep up with it. My house is new and had the correct size meter for supply, so watch that one. Hope that helps!

    Can you make an updated video? I'm planning on purchasing one but am unsure what brand to get. Does this generator run your whole house including your AC?

      Yes it runs my whole house including AC and our Well pump.

    I have an opportunity to purchase this exact same model with 40 hours used, for $4200. This not include the transfer switch or installation labor. Please tell me your thoughts. Anyone is welcome. Thanks guys! Note; the person I may purchase from is an electrician that I know personally. One of his clients moved up to a higher KW unit to accommodate a larger home.

      Seems reasonable. Maybe just have a local support tech check it out first if you can. And if possible see if the warranty transfers over. Mine came with a 6 year warranty, and it's good insurance.

      Thank you for the quick response! Just got off the phone with my electrician. He said the unit has a 10 year warranty, transferrable, and would cost nearly $10k U.S. including the natural gas labor total. I am highly considering this purchase. Thank you for your input sir!@@GOATbro_Australia

    4 attempts to start sounds bad to me. Has anyone come to check it out to see why so many attempts? Thanks BTW, I'm currently considering the Briggs vs the Kohler. Briggs comes with a 10 year warranty vs 5. Both have American made engines and Briggs price is slightly better than Kohler's. I haven't purchased it yet so I may go with Kohler but we'll see.

      That’s normal for first time start up. I’m sure it only takes one try presently

    If you did'nt have NG from the city? what would be your 2nd choice on how to run the genie?

    • @GOATbro_Australia
      @GOATbro_Australia  6 місяців тому

      I guess Propane. It's switchable between NG and Propane. Just would need a really big tank.

    I thought generators were not allowed to be installed that close to a window, thats odd to see. Maybe being a garage window its different?

    • @GOATbro_Australia
      @GOATbro_Australia  Рік тому +2

      That applies to windows that open. If the window is fixed and cannot be open, then the 18 inch rule applies. My window is fixed and cannot be opened.

    I am trying to decide on either a Briggs & Stratton or a Kohler. Did you look into a Kohler? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

      @GOATbro_Australia  Рік тому +2

      Yes I did. I looked at all options and did a lot of research. For me it all came down to local support, I have great support in town for Briggs and Stratton, and there are many installations and good supply of parts. The transfer switch integration is also important, and I liked the Symphony II and how well everything worked together. Local support was the big one though. Hope that helps.

    Does the exhaust vent out the left side or the right side?

    • @GOATbro_Australia
      @GOATbro_Australia  Рік тому

      Out the right as your facing it. The left side is cool air intake and warm air exhaust for engine cooling.

    Is this the DX series? I think I’m buying one very soon

      They may not use that terminology any longer. My purchase order and operators manual only refers to it as 040662 B&S PP20. They went to PP for Power Protect not long ago. The serial number is the main thing to look for to make sure your getting the latest version. They used to have one serial number for aluminum chassis, and another for steel. They may have moved away from that as well. Just check with your local distributor. Mine has the 6 year warranty. That use to be another designation as well. It changes a lot, so just confirm. Hope that helps.

      @@GOATbro_Australia Okay the one that I’m looking at is the PPDX20 which I believe is their newest line with a 10 year warranty on parts and labor. These have a great engine which I believe is a vanguard commercial grade.

      Sounds like the owner travels, so perhaps the home goes weeks without a visit.
