  • The Oliver Center for Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare at UTMB shares this advice: Picture for a moment a recent doctor’s appointment. We’ve all been there: time flies; we misunderstand a medical term (or two!); forget to ask a question; or leave out details when we relate the story at home.
Even a routine check-up can be overwhelming. And when you’re facing a serious health problem, those appointments become just a blur.
There’s a simple way to bring back-up: Press “record” on your smartphone or audio recorder every time you visit your doctor.
    That’s it!
You might think “I don’t need that. I carefully listen and my memory’s top-notch.”
But studies show we forget up to 75 percent of most conversations as soon as they’re over. And it’s even harder to remember important details when you’re under stress - say, if you’re talking about your health.
By recording these appointments, you can review what was said on your own time, clarify things you don’t understand, and share information with other providers, physical therapists, or specialists, and with family members, friends, or other caregivers.
Playing the “telephone” game isn’t fun when the message gets mixed up, and your health is on the line. Just by pressing “record:”
    • A couple knows exactly what their options are for treating his cancer.
    • A son can update his sister on Mom’s memory care from several states away.
When we’re overjoyed, or overwhelmed, it’s hard to focus on details. Just by pressing “record:”
    • A man can research his newly-diagnosed diabetes and prepare questions for his nutritionist.
    • A woman - delighted by her new pregnancy - can review her first prenatal visit.
Get started at your next appointment! Take out your phone or audio recorder and simply explain that you want to remember, and fully understand, what you’re about to discuss. If you’re not sure how to use the technology, ask for help.
Press “record” and really start listening, so you can be in control of your health and well-being.
