I could see the fear and anxiety in your eyes. Your family is out there with you and all kinds of things that 'could' happen start to run through your mind. I'm glad you made it out of that situation alright but I do have some suggestions. You're not an old guy. You should be able to handle a "drunk who couldn't climb" a shallow embankment. I'm not saying you want to have to handle him but you should be able to do that. Take some self defense classes. Get your confidence up so you can deal with a guy like that one-on-one and up close. Learn to use a baton or a staff or at least some mace. These kinds of situation you described don't have to be "gun or NO gun" situations. That's the last resort. If your life is in danger or that of your family, there's the "gun situation". But that gun needs to be kept concealed up until that escalated "fear of life" happens IMHO. Take some self defense classes. Get used to being punched around a little bit and build your confidence. If you're going to be hanging around camp sites, it's likely to happen again. Be better prepared next time. Good luck to you.

I KNOW PEOPLE LIKE THIS! Close family members and a "friend". These people give no regard for anyone but themselves and the people who they are with. They will fight for no reason and have no clue its them that is the issue, then walk away like they are still the shit!....This hits home so much right now, I had to comment lol...I'm completely done with these buttheads (I'd like to say something else but just incase any babies read this...) just so sick of the craziness all these type of people share with us all! Thank you, so glad we aren't alone 8n thinking this way! I mean, yes, have your fun camping but you bring a tent for a reason! There's a time and a place for fun and it's not by destroying someone else's camping trip...it was never your problem and it's really too bad you really didn't have a choice but to help them, even though they were rude and aggressive towards you and your family. Sorry y'all had to go through that! I wish there was a way to change this b.s!

Maybe I'm missing something here... but perhaps you meant 'Wanderer'.
Or maybe a play on words that doesn't really work too well.
Either way, good on you for being prepared. Kudos to your wife for thinking to wake up the camp. Two good moves followed by wise de-escalation, and a very good reminder for the rest of us.

Glad you were armed. As a retired police officer with 30 years on the job, I'm always armed. If you don't need it, no one ever needs to know it's there. If you do need it, you'll rate having it as the best decision you ever made. The only thing that I would respectfully suggest is that you always chamber a round. A gun with an empty chamber is basically a rock, and if the situation escalates quickly, a rush of adrenaline often makes it hard to perform the fine motor skills that would be necessary to quickly chamber one. I really enjoyed the video, and I'm glad you're safe.

As co-ed college students, my roomie and I headed into the Ozarks in my VW bug. Camped in a wooded area of a campground where no one was around. Ate dinner and got into my pup tent. Soon after falling asleep we were awakened by two pick up trucks with drunk boys shouting and hollering. Soon we heard "All we need are some girls!" At which point my roomie and I got out of the tent, quietly pulled up stakes and slowly opened the VW's door and stuffed it in, sleeping bags and all. Without shutting the doors, which would make a noise, we started the engine and rushed out of there. We heard the guys shouting, "Hey, what was that?" They never saw us but our hearts were beating all the way back to St Louis!

I just watched your video. It reminded me of a time long ago when I was camping with my five year old daughter in the High Sierras. It was just the two of us, mother and daughter in a tent by a lake. It was dark and my daughter was in bed. I was sitting outside the tent with a lantern glowing. I could hear yelling from across the lake. It sounded like a group of drunk guys. Then I heard rifle fire. This was the days before cell phones and I was in a somewhat remote area. Before long, I realized that the drunks were shooting at my lantern! I turned the lantern off, grabbed my daughter and jumped in the car with her. We drove into the closest town (Donner Summit) and contacted law enforcement. They followed us back to our campsite and stood by while I packed up camp. Meanwhile, another unit was across the lake making arrests. While I was getting ready to take down my small dome tent, the officer noticed a bullet hole near the top of my tent. There was an entrance and exit hole. My tent was taken as evidence. I never saw that tent again, nor did I want to. My days of camping with just my daughter and myself were over. We literally dodged a bullet.

So sorry to hear about this horrible experience. Seriously. As a former park ranger and government parks supervisor, I want you to know that you absolutely must report incidents like this. No one wants situations like this to occur. And, the only way to prevent this is to make an official incident report with authorities.
I've dealt with this kind of situation before and what we've done is concentrated on prevention. Many nights I spent in my patrol vehicle, hidden, waiting to stop this type of behavior.
If we have specific names from even vehicle license plates, trust me - we prosecute. I've testified at many grand juries.
USFS lands are all supervised by different managers, but I can promise you that every parks and USFS employee I know would take this incident very seriously.
But, if you don't report it, we don't know about it.
As public servants, responsible for managing your public recreational lands for your enjoyment, this is why we are here. To stop incidents like this from happening.
Anyhow, please explain this to your kids - there are responsible rangers who truly care.
What happened that night was a huge no no.

You can't stop incidents, you are like the police. When seconds matter, you are only minutes away. You can get drunkards for disturbing the peace after the fact, but that is about it. Which means we need LESS people foolishly depending on the gov't for protection, and an end to ALL of gov't's punishment of those that do defend themselves.

Thugs go into the wilderness without firewood & gear so they crash your site for a place to hangout and mooch. They need to be run off, camping is getting away from people like that.

I've had a couple scary run in's like this. Most recent was a hike I went to on the Oregon coast. I was by myself but asked my friend at the last minute if I could take his husky with me. We get up to the trail head and I only see one other vehicle with no one about, so I get Liam(doggo) on his leash and I take off. About 3/4 of a mile in, I slide off to the side of the trail cuz I heard gravel crunching behind me and figured it was someone wanting to pass me. As I turned to holler at this person that they can go by me, dude whips around super fast so he is facing this rock wall with a bunch of dead ferns on it. Almost like he didn't want me to see his face. He is standing about 20-25 yards down the trail in blue Jeans, work boots, black hoody and hat with his hood up. No water or anything else that I could see with him. It was a little weird so I decided against saying anything and just stood there while Liam is happily splashing in the puddles next to me. The guy is periodically peeking over his shoulder at me to see if I am still watching and at this point doggo has decided he doesn't like this guy. He stops with the puddles and mean mugs this dude, low growling with the hair on his back standing up. I have never seen this dog aggressive towards ANYONE, so I am a little freaked out now, knowing I only have a pocket knife and him to protect me. The dude stood there for probably a good 2-3 minutes staring at this wall and occasionally peeking at me before he realized I wasn't gonna move and took off back towards the trail head at a pretty brisk pace. Liam waited until he was out of site before he relaxed and went back to his puddle jumping. I waited another 10 minutes after the guy left before taking Liam and heading back down. We made it back to the truck without incident and the only other vehicle there besides mine was still sitting there empty. It might have been nothing, but my gut tells me that if I didn't have the dog with me, I probably wouldn't have come back from that day hike. I am in the process of looking into purchasing a pistol now and will not go out solo again with out one.

I really wish I knew the mentality these types of people have (drunk or not) that makes them go "Hmm, this person is trying to be left alone. I'm going to go and cause trouble for no reason."

I live near by where this video was shot. I keep a large can of bear spray and my .357 revolver on hand just in case. Here in Colorado the majority of campers are similarly equipped. I prefer my revolver as I don't want to be searching for my spent ammo cases in event of dispatching a threat. Remember the old camping axiom, leave no traces of your visit.

They threatened another camper and his family. We went to the nearest phone and called for help. When the authorities came a few of the young men threatened him, but one of their boys told them to back off. ive been in countless arguments with people about carrying while camping/kayak camping. Some of the most dangerous creatures in the wilderness are people. Good on you for de-escalating and also being ready if it went south. Carrying is great but bear spray is an awesome middle ground. Unfortunate that these kinds of things happen and all too often. Ive seen my share of late night creepers as well as drunks. Somehow I always feel better with animals lurking over people.

In the early 2000’s I was camping with my brother, aunt and uncle in Oregon on my aunt’s dad’s gold claim way deep in Quartzville creek Yellow bottom area. It was the middle of the night, we were all asleep inside our tents. It was so dark I couldn’t see my hands in front of me. We got woke up to the sounds of gun fire. It was so loud. We all got up and we’re unzipping our tents. My uncle was whisper yelling at my aunt to turn out the flash light before who ever was shooting zeroed in on the light inside the tent. We all managed to take cover behind some pine trees and figured out what the hell was going on. Some people were camped across the creek up above us on the hill. They seemed to be drinking and shooting their gun off up in the air at like 3am. My uncle said if he hears a bullet wiz by he’s shooting back. Luckily they stopped shooting their gun and stopped being loud after not to long and the rest the night was quiet. Scared the crap out of us though.

If you think this can only happen in the woods, think again... I was climbing Mt. Baker in 2006 and the first night we stayed at the 7k climbing camp on the Easton Glacier with 5 other parties. One thing I noticed was that there was a orange plastic fence erected around the climbing camp and I wondered what it could possibly be for. At around midnight I found out, drunken snowmobilers plowed down the fence and started driving through the climbing camp between the tents throwing empty whiskey bottles around.
Because this was a climbing trip, I didn't even consider bringing any personal protection beyond bear spray. Having climbed several other mountains in the Cascades, I had no idea such behavior was even possible... In one case, these idiots were jumping snow mobiles off a wind lip over an occupied climber tent. By the time I got out of my bivy sack, dressed, and ready to kick their asses, they were long gone back down the glacier. It seemed to me this is something these guys did with regularity...
Anyhow, way to deescalate and play it cool... Glad it worked out for you.

In my opinion, they should've calmly grabbed the children and left after the drunk did, and returned the next morning for their gear. It's most important that everyone was safe, especially the children. The drunks could have returned with even worse people, and the situation could've escalated and cost lives or injuries. Stuff can always be replaced, and bruised egos, healed. The welfare of your family must come first..

I took my young family tent camping in some very remote area of a mountain forrest 20 some years ago. While asleep, we were suddenly awoken by an enraged mountain lion that came into our camp and wouldn’t leave. It either had rabies or was hungry. Regardless, I greeted it with my Ruger Mini-30 semi-auto rifle and well, let’s just say that we were safe that night. It ran off like a bat out of hell. Another time years later we camped in a remote location and had two guys in a truck pull up and tried to steel my kids bicycles in camp at night. When confronted, they didn’t leave and turned toward me and my RV and threatened me with harm. Well, the mere presence of a BIG “tool” mounted with a bright light got their immediate attention and they fled like rats facing a big hungry cat. Sadly though, we packed up and moved 30 miles away to another cite, just to be safe. We called the local sheriff’s department too and reported the incident, but there was nothing they could do. Moral of the story…. The presence of “big-ass hammer” saved us while camping.
