    Hi Kenny!! Thanks for all your videos. The perfect 4th on toms help me a lot to have more volume on toms and a better natural mix on my drums.
    What different pitches you work with in standard 22 wood bass drums?
    It will be awesome if you do more videos on bass drum and snare drum tuning like the videos you have about the different ways of tunning toms. Regards!

    Hi kenny, a friend of mine have a awesome rebounce on The kickdrum, but mine dosent get that….how can i get more rebounce when i kick the pedal on the drum?

      Tighten the Vater head up a bit, and tighten the spring on your pedal. Also if you can adjust the angle of the beater make sure it’s not too far back towards your foot or forwards to the head. Thank you for watching.

    Hi Kenny
    What do think is the best kick drum size for rock live and recording 22x14 or 24 x14 or 20 x18 I like
    a tight deep thump?

      James Norton Official best is relative. Tuned properly all three can be incredibly effective. Boots? 20” x 18” Scott? 24” x 16” slayed it. That being said, for big boom 24”, for punch 22”

    What are the best drum heads for a live rock performance at a bar? I know tuning matters but I just wanted to know which heads would have the loudest and punchiest sound live instead of making my maple drums super dead sounding. BTW they will be mic'd

      Ethan Carlson Clear 2 ply heads or Evans black chrome.

      Ethan Carlson Remo Pinstripes or Evans EC2 (both clear) are great too but have a little more control.

    Kenny, how do you deal with triggers when using an EMAD? I had to cut a space for the foam of my trigger to make contact with the drum head

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  7 років тому +1

      Yeah that's about the only way to do it. I just use an EQ4 instead.

    Do you find different pitch intervals work better for different depths?
    Like does a really deep drum work better with one specific interval, while a shallow drum prefers to be tuned to something else?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  8 років тому +1

      Dexter W. Totally. While most intervals work well with all Drums I tend to find that shallower Drums (pancake toms, 5" snare, 14 " BDS ) often work best with smaller intervals. 1/2 step -Major 3rd. Although for toms n snares the perfect 4th usually works quite well. On shallow BDS the 4th can sound boingy.

    What do you recommend for a 22 X 18 Maple light?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 роки тому

      The same intervals will work, however, as sizes change sometimes you must experiment with what works best for the drum. Half step, Whole step, major 3rd? Front head looser? Front head tighter. It's all about what the drum says.

    What would you recommend for a 24x14 oak kick

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  8 років тому +4

      MikeBigDrums Ah yes 26 x 14. It's a great starting point, and the reason I mentioned setting the batter head as low as it can go then tune up until it feels right for your foot. 24 & 26 INCH BDS can feel mushy at low tensions. That being said I recommend starting with a the resort 1/2 step higher than the batter and see if you like it. If it's too rangy try a whole step or the Major 3rd to tighten up the tone. if any of these "higher front batter" methods make the drum too boingy try tuning the front head a half step lower than the batter. Especially if you have the batter head pretty tight. On Rihanna 2011-2013 I tuned Chris John son's 24×16 Oak with the front head a half step higher and the sound was huge.

      With bigger drums I found that tuning the bottom/front/resonate heads slightly higher does make it sound huge. It keeps the 'tone' (more tone in fact!) & the dynamic in the drums which is very important to me. And they sound amazing through a PA too!!. TONE is everything to me. Basically I figured that drum companies spend million$ on research/development to extract as much 'tone' & sustain out of the wood they use to make their drums. So it blows my mind how drummers still gaffer tape drums because of the natural ring. You might as well just mic up the drum cases & play on them if it bothers you that much. Anyway some of my fellow drumming buddies often comment how tight the tensioning is on all my drums. There's no real reason apart from it feels comfortable for me & its all about tone. The goal is to get a good balance between head & shell. Drumstick are just as important in the sound the drum projects too. Mic placement is also very important too, especially with bigger drums. I found that John Bonham & Stewart Copeland shared the same or similar tight tuning techniques. I remember Stewart Copeland saying in an MD interview how the tighter tuning responded incredible when miked up. They cut better through the mix. Plus with todays PA systems the woofers & speakers really bring out the drums like never before. I've heard drummers with 20in bass drums sound like its a 28in.

      I couldn't agree with you more on every thing you said. I use tape as a tool or for a technique not as a substitute for tuning. If youve seen my my two vids covering the use of gaff tape i use it on the snares to create an effect. That same method works GREAT when you HAVE to tone it down like a radio booth set or a morning tv show. Both on drums and on cyms. Retain tone. A flat piece piece of tape is a tone killer. Unless of course thats the sound you wanted in which case bravo. Lol

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  7 років тому +1

      I only use tape for effect. For example when getting a super fat, super low, tuning on a snare drum. Or creating a boxier sound.

    Would you use the same approach to a 26x14in Bass Drum?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  8 років тому +2

      DesignPro2002 It's a great starting point. Please read the reply I wrote to Mike Big Drums as he posted the exact same question right after you posted. When I do my BD series I will include 26" BDS.

      Thanks Kenny! I must say that you're tuning techniques is by far the best out there. Of course everyone has their personal tastes in sound/tuning etc, however I've discovered that your techniques is what I call 'common sense' approach is very drummer friendly & gets the desired result with little fan fair. Basically its a no BS approach. With that in mind its particularly beneficial & helpful for the working/touring drummer who comes across many challengers & successes. Thank you YOU ROCK!!!
