    Huur / hoer is a classic, it happened in my class as well when we had a lesson about "vaste lasten". Someone started "ten eerste betaal ik de hoer" and the teacher was a bit shocked :D My funny mistakes were when I confused "overleven" with "overleden" (come on, just one letter, haha), when I thought that "steekpartij" was some kind of a barbecue (as it sounds like a steak party) and when my friends came over to Amsterdam, saw an "Openbare bibliotheek" and were sure it was a library with an open bar.

      Funny! But I can't imagine a Dutch teacher being shocked about 'ten eerste betaal ik de hoer', because this is such a common mistake. She must have heard it a million times before.

    Een vriendin van mij heeft voor een tijdje in Nederland gewoond. In het begin zorgde ze eens voor verwarring met de opmerking dat ze op weg naar huis de UITVAART had gemist. In het Duits noemen wij de AFRIT van de snelweg AUSFAHRT.

    Ik heb een verhaal voor je, ik was bij mijn schoonouders bij de eettafel. Het was niet mooi weer buiten, het regent. Een kat kwam plotseling binnen en ik voelde dat hij langs mij been was dus ik aaide hem. Hij was nat, ik zei, 'Er is een natte poes hier' iedereen begon te lachen en ik had geen idee waarom. Later heb ik geleerd dat die mensen waren allemaal aan een vrouwelijke lichaamsdeel waren aan het denken.

    • @martinvoet217
      @martinvoet217 2 роки тому

      Hahaha! It's not really a mistake, but that phrase has sexual connotations. It literally means ''There's a wet pussy over here'' 😂
      In that sentence we would have used the word ''kat'' in stead of ''poes'' to express what you wanted to say.

    Many foreign people cannot pronounce the place Scheveningen. It's kind of a unique thing as in many languages the "SCH" is pronounced as "SH" but here the C is not silent.
    In WW II it was the perfect method to catch German spies red handed as German does not know that construction so it will always be spoken out as "She fenningen" and there went your entire cover out the window. 😂

    I've got an example, but the other way around... This was a Dutch speaking person, trying to speak English, but by including a Dutch word to the sentence it became rather offensive. ;)
    I think this was back in 1996. My friends and I went to Salou, Spain for the summer holiday and one time we were at the hotel, waiting for the elevator. Now the elevator had a little window in it, so when the elevator came up we could see that there were people inside. We saw that is was the elderly English couple that we had seen a couple of times before.
    So my friend signalled to hide so they wouldn't see us, so we did. And as soon as the door opened my friend jumped in front of them and yelled: "BOO!"
    The couple of course was taken completely off guard and me and my friends found that hilarious. But when we were done laughing my friend said the most iconic sentence I've ever heard him say. He addresses the elderly woman who was the most shocked and said to her: "It's a joke, hoor..."

    Common topics you learn in early Dutch lessons are clothes and going to the huisarts. During a lesson we were taking random questions written in paper out of a jar to practice with our colleagues, and my colleague asked me something like "hoe lang heb jij dit jeuk?" (for how long have you had this itch?). But I misunderstood the last word as "jurk" (dress) and that day I was wearing a dress I've had for a long time. She was quite shocked that I answered I had that "itch" for 8 years until we figured out the misunderstanding...

    In german: "Bist du klargekommen?" would be "Did you made it?" (without having problems) Example: Someone lends a neighbor a machine to DIY that the other has never used before. When the machine is returned, the other asks? "Und? Bist du (damit) klargekommen? Meaning: "So? Did you get along (with it)?"

      Yeah, there are many interesting and funny ‘false friends’ between the German and Dutch language. The for German people normal sounding sentence “Kommst du mit dir geiles neuen Auto klar?” sounds really funny for a Dutch person, as it seems like they are saying in Dutch: “Kom je met je geile nieuwe auto klaar?” Which means something like “Do you get an orgasm from your horny new car?”. 😂

    I think that some of the the confusion with geil and geel comes from the fact that when people speak quickly, the Dutch ei can sound to me like a short e and the Dutch ee can sound to me like a short i. For example "zeilen" can sound to me like "zelle" and "hoeveel" can sound to me like "hoevil".
    I saw a similar problem to huur and hoer discussed in a UA-cam video about Norwegian pronunciation that said that if you mispronounce the Norwegian word for "you", it will sound like a Norwegian word for "toilet".
    I once read an article by a Spanish speaking comedian about his problems with the English word "sheet".

      😆 In Afrikaans, which is very similar to Dutch, this examples of mistakes are the same except for opgewonde. We use it to say that someone is excited about something. Example: Die seun was opgewonde toe sy pa vir hom 'n geskenk gee. Which translates to: The son was excited when his father gave him a present/gift.

    • @mariadebake5483
      @mariadebake5483 2 роки тому

      @@manuelsantana758 In that sense it can be used in Dutch too. It just means exited. Only it CAN be used in a sexual way, so it's a word you have to be careful with. The context has to be very clear, but you can definitly say a child is exited about a present using this word

    klaarkomen does not specifically have to mean orgasm in dutch. If someone is doing something and somean asks: "' is het klaargekomen" this is a normal sentence. Of "het is niet klaar gekomen" if something has not been finished.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 2 роки тому

      But that's an oldfashioned term, nowadays. Usually klaarkomen is used for orgasming.
      The context can still make it sound normal, if it is a jacket that needed to be finished and your grandma says; 'Wel, ik ben ermee klaargekomen..' with a tired face.
      But as soon as she says she's klaargekomen with a paintbrush or something, it gets a lot more strange (and funny.)

    You should also do a video on the same kind of mistakes in translations between German and Dutch. You will find some funny mistakes people from Germany and the Netherlands make with the other language. I think that Dutch people make these mistakes with German more than German people do with Dutch, allthough German people seem to have some moments of confusion with written Dutch.

      I´ve heard one example about geil (geiles Auto) that went wrong, one example of Klaarkomen in an office, one of Schwul/Zwoel (dancing camp and dancing seductively) being confused, which was a compliment and ended in a fight on the dancefloor and one of a Dutch person using the word Fikkie and it being misunderstood.
      I would like to see that video too. :)

      Oh also, a friend of my great-grandpa once came over and brought his children and to please them, my great-grandmother bought steak, because 'Americans liked steak.'
      One of the kids didn't cut the meat right and started choking halfway through, to which the American angrily responded; 'Cut! CUT!' and slapped the kid on the back to get the meat back out.
      All the kids at the dinnertable were sitting there with red faces and gaping mouths, flabbergasted that the important American man would curse like that haha.

      If it is really sourced from old dutch then it most likely means "ijskoud" and is a word combination from "ijs" and "Koud" it means Ice Cold or Cold as Ice. Back in the days' abandoned kids/foundlings were rather common and often found cold as ice. And since they were nameless it was given, depending on the era and regional dialect, the name "Eijskoot" or "Jiskoot" or "Yskoud". So over time, this foundlings name became a Surname/Family name. And still can be found today spelt like this, but no longer as a word but as a name. Such as "Kees Jiskoot" or "Silvester Yskoud" or "Eefje Eijskoot".

    Zag dit filmpje en als Nederlander met een van oorsprong buitenlandse vrouw heel herkenbaar.
    Uit nieuwsgierigheid, ben je zelf Nederlandse?
    En nog een kleine tip, als je nederlands aan mensen wilt leren, kijk dan nog even goed naar je beschrijvende tekst of er geen fouten in staan 😁
