    I love how the song is about jack white wanting to be his own thing and not be compared to anyone else, but the title of the song is the name of a movie

      you're half wrong: I've seen RTF live with my parents @ the Fox theater in St Louis but I've never heard of Mahavishnu. While RTF are incredible fusion, I would argue that this song is completely different sounding than RTF, but I couldn't speak to the other one you mentioned.

      This kind of songwriting just feels effortless at this point. It’s more dependent on top studio musicians doing things that take them out of comfort zone. It’s worth a listen but I wish jack would revert back to a more traditional style songwriting instead of this improv fusion stuff.

    • @jayt7178
      @jayt7178 6 років тому +18

      Matthew Hackett why? He’s done that for like 2 decades. And his writing on his last two solo albums was sounding stale. Too detached. Which isn’t to say that I didn’t like them. I did. This is just hella more interesting than his usual country/blues/blue eyed soul Schtick.

    • @matthewhackett3429
      @matthewhackett3429 6 років тому

      Jay T I don’t think he’ll continue in this direction. This album was his first done on pro tools and exceeds his usual 8 tracks. It’s fun. Definitely written on the spot so it’s possible he has songs on the back burner that he’s slowly crafting for another John Mayer style Columbia release which is what I’m looking forward to him spending loads of budget on studio musicians

      @@smitty7326 2:41 Notice Jack looking down and the voice effect changing after that. He's most likely affecting his voice by running that specific mic into a harmonizing pedal or something.

    Pretty interesting song, I heard so many different influences; Jazz, Zappa, Primus, Rage Against the Machine, some of his vocals also maybe had some AdRock (earlier, License to Ill, Check Your Head) and I liked the different timing the drummer played with. The only part that kinda hit me weird was the drop down to light piano, but I'm not saying I didn't like it, just the first time I heard the song. It's def. songs like this where a good drummer really shows their stuff. Cool.

      "The man sounds lost." -My brother, in the music business. I can't help but agree. I can hear some stuff I like, but it's too mixed in with a lot of things that just aren't working for me like they should.
      Blunderbuss and Lazeretto, and the recent acoustic compilation album were all gold. The duet with Alicia Keys in "Another Way to Die" was the best part of Quantum of Solace. Loved both Raconteurs albums enough to go see them in concert when they were touring for the second album with The Kills as their opener. The White Stripes have forever left more than a few marks on society.
      But this… What happened to the all-about-the-basics man we met in "It Might Get Loud"?
      I mean, Boarding House Reach isn't the travesty that was Neil Young's "Trans," but it still feels like it missed the mark.

    • @a1rondog1a
      @a1rondog1a 6 років тому +3

      I can dig on some of what you are saying but when you do something for long enough, and you're proven to have this much talent, well, you just can't help but evolve. Sure, wasn't Neil Youngs best work (trans) but warrant that with his other styled albums and you can see that growing is part of the talent.
      Having said that, this song in particular was a story wanting to be told, as I read things. Grabbed you from the first note, gave some character detail, so you'd get to know and understand them better and ended with a climax that only sheer providence could pull off.
      Now, THAT'S entertainment, folks :D

      While his current album could be construed as a misstep by many, and understandably so, I prefer this to something “safe”. For me, I don’t dislike the album, but so much of it to me feels like sketches, rather than fully fleshed out songs. Despite that quibble from me, it makes me 1,000,000% excited and confident for his next album, as I suspect that this will come to be seen as a transition between Lazaretto and whatever strangeness he next brews up.

    Every little thing Jack White lays his hand to... just rocks. That being a given - there was something about the experimental sound and lyrics that reminded me of Prince. hmmmm....

    Daring and brave, but ultimately completely unenjoyable.
