- Sparring at SRL Gym in Maryland, June 1988, a few weeks before the U.S. Olympic Trials... Gerald McClellan was in the gym that day, too, as was Sugar Ray himself...this was three months before Roy would be robbed at the (Seoul) Olympics and five months before Leonard would defeat Donny LaLonde...

If Roy Jones Jr was sparring in Sugar Ray Leonard's gym..... Stands to reason that RJJ & SRL sparred as well. I'd like to see that tape.
They sparred once in 1987...but not in this camp...

+IceJohnScully This Shawn. I use to box at SRL and was pretty good friends with Sugar Rays nephew name Carlos, but we called him Cornbread. He boxed for a little while at SRL. Ray's father use to bring him to the gym and he told us that his uncle was going to be at the gym. I asked him to take me with him because the gym was going to be closed that day for this sparring. Me and him came in for about 5 or 6 minutes and then we left because his grandfather came to pick him up. My main reason in going was to see Sugar Ray, because out of all of the years boxing at his gym, we didn't see him much. I really didn't know about Roy, you or any of the other amateur boxers that much. I had only been boxing for almost two years at that time. Claude Boger and Junious Hinton were my coaches. Roy won in the srl sparring match there is a interview where roynis saying he was faster and stronger but he says srl caught him with a good left hook but that was it
Leonard was an old man. retarded. Leonard was a little smaller but he had a much better chin and better skill than jones
Can i ask you something mr Scully?How do you deal with anxiety before sparrings or fights?I had a big problem with that this year and i just stopped going to sparrings for a few months.
+skotiskiller ...sparring often against different styles helps a lot... A LOT of it is mental, though.. you simply have to learn to mentally deal with it. Try and relax.. not get so worked up beforehand...try not to let the anticipation break you down...
IceJohnScully You are right.From what i ve learnt boxing at least in the beginning is 80 percent mental.I will try to go and don't think about it a lot.It is difficult though and the more you learn about it the more you appreciate guys like you.
Ray may have a different view, though :)
really late to the party, but did the Gman get in the ring with Roy? How well did turn out for a sparring session?

No, he was there but couldn't spar because his jaw was still sore from the fight (he won) against Roy one month earlier
