    I know how you feel! I received my first encounter with Japanese vinyl in the form of Duran Duran's 1982 Rio LP! I was so blown away by the sound and the eleborate packaging! I've been addicted to these pressings ever since.

    Great vid as usual Frank. First time I ever got a Japanese pressing of anything, not to mention the first time I ever ordered music out of magazine, was in 1991 when I got the CD of Y&T's Earthshaker (because I couldn't find it anywhere at the time) -- CDs as well came with the obi strip and lyric sheets, and yeah, sometimes the English lyrics were, um, different.
    Haven't actually got much for Japanese vinyl, but I did get an unopened copy of Kiss Killers a few years back.

      Hi Tim. I've seen a lot of cool Japanese CDs online and on UA-cam, but I don't personally own any. One of these days I'll have to grab some. Once in awhile I poke around on Amazon Japan, but the prices for new stuff (CDs and vinyl) are very expensive.
      Very cool find on the KISS Killers!

    Frank my friend, what can I say? This was awesome and informative as always! I sadly do not own one single Japanese pressing, mainly because of the price, as you mentioned, BUT I definitely would like to eventually get myself many Japanese pressings. I've heard so many positive things about Japanese pressings since I joined the VC, especially regarding the quality, so needless to say, I am very curious!! Thanks again for another awesome video buddy, and have yourself a great week! -Jex

    Love the Japanese pressings. Frank mentions the 70s and 80s. The 60s were great too, I have found the Liberty label to be exceptional in the US and esp. Japan.
    The OBI strips are a lot of fun too! I have a DJ turntable and have been able to digitize my treasures.

    When I was in Tokyo I picked up a Kiss Lick It Up album with the band still in makeup. Including Eric the Fox. When I came back to the states I had to buy the American release because it had the first cover without makeup. The perks of being in two countries on the release date.

    I've got a japanese pressing of Queen's A Night at the Opera, and it's beautiful! I bought it online from a non-japanese place though, but still it's awesome! the gatefold jacket is well made, and it came with something similar to the lyric sheet, but it doesn't has the lyrics because the lyrics are already in the jacket, but it has info about the record and the song list. pretty amazing, and it's an awesome album! I highly reccomend it

    I've got a Kenny Loggins "Celebrate Me Home" LP from 1977 original pressing...in pristine condition, lyric sheet and intact obi. Amazing how the obi's been wrapped around it for 40 years. Got that same CBS-Sony orange imprint as on your Aerosmith record. A US pressing would've been the red "Columbia all around" label.
    The jacket process is also different! It seems to be a tad heavier stock than US, assembled plain and then "wallpapered over" with the appropriate cover and back artwork layer. As opposed to a typical US jacket artwork that's direct-printed on the stock, then assembled - all using softer stock (which fits that method, I guess).

    I think I might have some Japanese pressings (maybe 2 or 3) of Rock albums, but I do have some albums made by Japanese artists for the Japanese market (mainly featuring weird, gigantic Yamaha electronic synths and keyboard instruments). I also have one multi-record set that I bought mainly because it was $.99, had a padded cover, and had a picture disk of the empty stage where I'm guessing the album was recorded (all the liner notes are in Japanese - I think - and I can't read them) - with another picture disk of who I think is the band leader of the group on the album.
    It was a curiosity thing more than anything else.
    I gravitate more towards the Mo-Fi stuff when seeking quality.
    As always, fun video.

    i have heard and made many many comparisons with UK and Japanese pressings, packaging aside the Japanese records are quieter vinyl but the mastering quality is not usually up to European standards - in most cases i have found the Japanese pressings to sound uncomfortably brighter and compressed with less "zing" than their British counterparts, less noticeable on budget hifi systems but painfully obvious on higher quality equipment.

  • @peterregorsek1504
    @peterregorsek1504 4 роки тому

    But we have a problem, japanese vinyl records are more or less history, all reissues are available only on Compact Disc. Since the end of eighties, Japanese got rid of vinyl and took over shiny compact disc as their main format. So prices of vintage japanese vinyl goes up and also it will wear out one day. But still you can buy new "MIni LP" releases.:)

    Fully agreed with the 5 things that make Japanese pressing SO COOL !!! Indeed an LP without an obi strip or sticker will be at least 50% cheaper & doesn't represent the completeness of a Japan pressed LP. I've been converting my vinyls to Japanese pressed since 5 years ago. My only poor pressing & recording I experienced has to be George Michael's Faith which has poor recording (same too for US press).

    The Japanese pressing I have of Led Zeppelin's Hey Hey What Can I Do is by far the best sounding version of that song ever created. The digital track released on Coda as a bonus track is not mixed as well and does not sound as good.

    i don't have any Japanese lp pressings but do own a few cd pressings wich are pretty cool. two of 'em i'm proud to own. i have a japanese cd pressing of Scorpions Return to Forever (suprisingly i accidentally received and probably was good thing, lol) and the other is a japanese cd pressing of Forbidden's Forbidden Evil wich is one of those mini lp sized replica's but since it's a japanese pressing they pretty blow away most of the american mini lp sized cd reissues (due to the bonus content, like booklets, lyrics, etc...).

The rare records of Neil to get are the quadrophonic pressing of his Serenade album along with a pressing that had side A on both sides, his I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight that list You Don't Send Me Flowers, and his Lovescape and Up On The Roof album

    No J vinyl, but I have 1 J CD. It's Leonard Bernstein conducting some Mozart. It sounds good, nothing to write home about, but the liner notes are ALL IN JAPANESE, NO ENGLISH TRANSLATION. Go figure! Yes, it has a "sash," but it's on the left edge of the cd box, and doesn't slip over the box. It's all in J too, except for the name Leonard Bernstein, OC. The sad thing is I can't read the LN, one of the fun parts of getting a new CD.

    I think it needs to be added that Japanese pressings in general use heavier-stock covers, which make them feel very substantial and add to the quality. Often the gatefolds are so thick they barely squeeze into a nice 4 mil outer sleeve.

    Looking closely at the KISS - "Creatures of the Night" label, I see Ace, Gene & Paul in the costumes from the performances of cuts from the "Music From 'The Elder'" album--done on the short-lived SNL rip-off "Fridays"--and I see drummer Peter Criss's replacement Eric Carr... seemingly added-in, judging by the barely noticeable edit to the edge of the image of his shoulder before the image of Ace Frehley. Plus, from what I recall, Eric wasn't part of the band yet when "The Elder" was released... Leading me to think that the imagery on this label was a last-minute change ("doctoring") of the original.

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  7 років тому

      It's an interesting label, isn't it? I'll have to take a closer look at the photo and in particular, Eric, when I'm at home. I do believe he was an official member at the point. Why they used this on the Japanese Creatures label, however, is a mystery to me.
      Cheers!

    yes japan pressings are pretty, I have all aerosmith 1st japan pressings, but! most japan pressings are NOT better than the origin country press, why? most japans used copies of the master tapes, not use the original master tapes also tends to loose bass, I really don't know why a lot people think that japan pressings are better and is not true, maybe because sound quiet... I don't say that are bad but I prefer pressings that are more close to the original master tapes. Watch this please to get a deep explanation: ua-cam.com/video/eKcV430APoo/v-deo.htmlm49s

    unfortunately there's not much special japanese pressings going on in the electronic music scene coze overall this kind of music is too niche to require extra editions being done for one single country market only. but i always love the obi strip things when i see them in videos of other collectors as they look pretty cool indeed.

      well, from what i know in terms of behind the scenes info coming from both labels and pressing plants the most requested quantity for an initial pressing order in electronic music is in between 200 - 300 copies both for 12" singles and albums. this goes for small and more established labels and even the last mentioned usually don't sell out. some labels even tend to do only 100-150 copies and no represses to avoid large amounts of unsold / undistributed backstock. so these numbers might explain why there's no japan-only pressings for this kind of stuff.
      and i think not many ppl are aware of the numbers being that low so, theoretically speaking, the collectability factor of underground electronic music is pretty high. even more as these records are usually used by dj's which, from a collectors point of view, means that for many records unwrecked mint copies are very hard to come by
