RE# Comments made about this reporter. To put things into perspective a little, this Aussie reporter had just started this low budget 1977 teenage music program. It's far from 60 minutes stuff. Yeh it's "what do they know about Australia". Rage is an Australian music show on ABC. It still has exactly the same splash screen even today. Though by the time I was watching Rage in the 90s it was just a music show (Recovery on after Rage would sometimes have segments like this).

It's just one of those things that's on my mind because I'm also a biig Mafia history enthusiast and I see this video and all I can think of is that all these different mafia families were just walking around doing all these things and all these like you know big mob gangster name characters were just alive at these times it's just kind of blows my mind

A neat little stroll down the lane of nostalgia , this video !
This was before the Wiggles, Crocodile Dundee, and even Men at Work. Australia just hadn't made much of an impact on American pop culture yet. They should have followed up with questions about New Zealand.
Fun fact : Did you know 60's 70's Iran and Afghanistan dressed like this and living with 'Western' culture before revolution(as they say) and war happened
yes I know as well as lebanon they were the party places of the middle east good god the women are beautiful. my friends father had an airline in Iran then had to flee in 1977. we are still friends to this day we would look at the old black and white photos with is mother. his mom is 80 now and still hot
Private enterprise and large monolith companies were just fine then. The city coffers needed money for municipal infrastructure projects which, given the population and age of the city and its roads, bridges, tunnels and subways alone, were -- and still are -- overwhelming.
Seeing all those a bit older guys, probably in their 50s and 60s, kinda crazy thinking a lot of them 30 something years prior to this video being shot were running through the fires of hell on the battlefields of WW2
jahwangful Its typical 70s fashion. This is how people dressed back then in my country Bulgaria. Even in the 60s they used to dress in a similar way. The 1980s was all about dressing like the disco divas, Miami Vice, clips of Michael Jackson and Glam rock groups. Totally different. The 90s were a decline of fashion here
Rage was first aired in 1987... However, this is 1977 footage. You can see at 2:25 that Silver Streak featuring Gene Wilder (a 1976 film) is advertised in the background.

NY NY. A city so nice they had to name it twice!
My city no other place like it Nyc and state
The lifestyle in this were great.
The year of SNL of John belushi, Chevy Chase, and other cast members. Long live SNL in that time.

Destination 77.
I was not alive to see NYC then. Seems like life was simpler and happier.
It was happier before internet and iPhones.
"Don't know anything about Australia" shows you that even then, the public school system in our country sucks!
I remember the Cotton Club for nightlife, and a new opening Italian sandwich shop for dinner. NYC was safe at nights at that time.
Didn't know you had New York too Gezza, cool!
Chris Sutherland just the one😁👍
Yeh it's "what do they know about Australia". Rage is an Australian music show on ABC. It still has exactly the same splash screen even today. Though by the time I was watching Rage in the 90s it was just a music show (Recovery on after Rage would sometimes have segments like this).
If all the children in the vedio were ten years back then .. They are now 52
duh
Sometimes you just see a person in the background and wonder what life they've went through. Here they are, frozen in time.
I was 12 in 1977 I could have been one of those kids that he interviewed but I lived in upstate New York at that time
whats the language of Australia?? Australian!! LOLLL
Yea..I was kind of wondering about that question myself. Trick question. LOL
tca yes but we speak American. Mexicans don't speak spanish, they speak Mexican. lol
tca 😂😂😂😂
Lol~ i'm living in Australia but i speak English
If this reporter (Stephen MacLean) is the same person who wrote the 1982 film Starstruck then sadly he died in 2006.
mike65085 I think you’re correct.
Thanks good pick up.

Both of my parents were born in 1977
I'm 36 years old and you know I love watching all these old videos of New York City even though I was born in Texas in 1986 I was raised in this part of the country the tri-state area and I really really love New York City and I love New Jersey I love to see old pictures videos of both New York and New Jersey but New York City most of all because of all the culture and all the things that were going on in the 70s 80s even the 60s I'll tell you my favorite thing is that at this time the mafia was around and had total control of nyc. It's just one of those things that's on my mind because I'm also a biig Mafia history enthusiast and I see this video and all I can think of is that all these different mafia families were just walking around doing all these things and all these like you know big mob gangster name characters were just alive at these times it's just kind of blows my mind
It's crazy to think that things were different before now.
yeah, in this video, you see nobody with phones on their hands, there was no internet, and there was payphones to pay.
G'day BBQFanNo1, i can also remember hearing the same about NYC,a few years later,
it may of been after watching the warriors movie , that would be a risky place to roam! :-] cheers Gezza
awesome to see my city in the year that i was born!
Just how often did he have to say that the city was bankrupt.
What were the names of the music that was playing in the video
1997 Daniel Flores Living in the city, Stevie Wonder.
*After the original Yankee tune of course.
@@Gezza1967 thanks.

Why is this horizontally squeezed?
Because I had no idea about aspect ratio at the time.
@@Gezza1967 Well these older4 clips are 1.33 X 1 99% of the time, plus if you look, you can see everyone is unnaturally stretched out like Paula Abdul in her PROMISE OF A NEW DAY music video. Hopefully there is a way to correct it, but thank you for writing me back and posting such a solid video!

Wow the year I was born
So a bunch of 12 year olds are supposed to be representative of the entire population's knowledge?
Across the river in Brooklyn is where I grew up . But I was born there , on the island of Manhattan , some nineteen years before this film was made . So I heard " sharks " and " kangaroos " . Well , those kids knew a lot more about Australia than I did then , I'm sorry to say . I doubt if even I could find it - Australia - on a map then ! A neat little stroll down the lane of nostalgia , this video !
This was before the Wiggles, Crocodile Dundee, and even Men at Work. Australia just hadn't made much of an impact on American pop culture yet. They should have followed up with questions about New Zealand.
I remember walking down the street in Manhattan on a visit from Montreal a cop on a horse came up from behind us and said hello ladies.
I did not exist in 70s yet. Looks more authentic.
Fun fact : Did you know 60's 70's Iran and Afghanistan dressed like this and living with 'Western' culture before revolution(as they say) and war happened

This was Joey Diaz's New York
It's a beautiful .amazing NYC
Private enterprise and large monolith companies were just fine then. The city coffers needed money for municipal infrastructure projects which, given the population and age of the city and its roads, bridges, tunnels and subways alone, were -- and still are -- overwhelming.
Seeing all those a bit older guys, probably in their 50s and 60s, kinda crazy thinking a lot of them 30 something years prior to this video being shot were running through the fires of hell on the battlefields of WW2
I remember Halloween 1977 I went as C3PO. The moonlight was gleaming off the gold.
His glasses and hair style and fashion look like 1987 not 1977
some fashions and glasses and whatnot lasted through the 1980's. :-)
jahwangful Its typical 70s fashion.
Look at the cars in the background behind him. Will give you an idea of when this was made.
01DOGG01 __,Good eye!
Golly. I had no idea Australian was a language! Lol
God damn foreign reporters exposing the ignorance of us Americans. "They speak Australian in Australia." Leave us alone ok!!!!! We don't know these things!!!
THOSE WERENT NEW YORKERS...THOSE WERE REFUGEES
3:02 Say hello to your grandparents
Stephen MacLean passed away in 2006.
Who was that?
Sorry not 30 million, that would include NJ and Long Island and CT, which are NOT part of NYC
Besides, people today are far more educated than they were back then.
