I have the 2014 model. As you say, loads of torque and fun to ride. There’s nothing like a retro inline 4 with EFI. Without any screen, you feel like you are doing 100 mph when sitting on 60 mph. Also, easy on my wrists and back (as a 65 year old). Cheers, great review.

I live in New Zealand and bought my 2015 blue XJR1300 early 2016 from a dealer in Blackburn through ebay. It came with the Akrapovič slip-on exhaust as standard and have since put a fly screen on and bought the same paniers, although with my busy life, I haven't had an opportunity to tour yet. I could have bought a standard XJR1300 new in NZ, but really wanted the cafe racer version, so imported it myself! Yes, even though the tank is smaller than standard XJR, NZ is the perfect place to ride as there's always a petrol station within range. It is an absolute pleasure to ride and the roads here are just made for biking, and especially off the main highways, you don't have to deal with a lot of traffic. Even the lack of the 6th gear, although I do sometimes look for it, doesn't bother me at all! Once you get going, it's as light as a feather and such a smooth ride. I love this bike, having had three Yamahas previously (two DTs and a TTR250), it was no problem to go from a 250 to 1300. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it may be the only one in New Zealand and my local Yamaha dealer in Napier has no problems servicing it. It also gets to live in the carpeted garage, even my Golf Mk6 TSI doesn't get to do that! Fantastic bike!
Wunderful bike! 12 years riding this Yamahas (FJ1200 -FJ 1200 Comete Side Bike - XJR 1300) and still all the time zero problems. Looks great, powerful engine und unbreakable!

You should love it mate. Honestly I have had everything going. Got a z1000, street triple r, tiger 800 and fz8 now and I can honestly say I loved my xjr And will buy another one. Should not have sold my one
Good review on a great bike mate! I have the earlier style 2013 model , hasn't missed a beat in 75k klms mainly touring with the wife on board. It's a keeper for sure...happy riding !
Thanks mate. I also had 2000 model XJR many years ago. good old tanks. The 2015 is pretty much still the same as yours. Same engine ,frame, forks and so on. Just seat , tank , side panels, bars and back end cut down is really the only difference.

Love your review and couldn't agree more! I had a 2000 model (the red/black XJR 1300 SP) for a year and loved it. Because I wanted to customize it, I looked for a place to have that done. In my search I found a 2012 version that was customized to my likings and traded in the 2000 XJR. After three years I still love it and as with you, I'm never going to sell it. There are going to be other bikes in my shed, but they'll allways be next to my XJR. I love evereything about it.. all the things you mentioned. Only nitpick is the lack of a 6th gear. But that's only a problem on the highway.. a place I try to avoid.. because it's boring.
Good review, I’ve ridden for 30 years and ridden everything from mx bikes to super sports r1s etc etc. also a fast rider/ex racer. Haven’t had a bike since 2017 which was new gsxr 1000 then. Which was awesome, but I’ve been off the road for a few years for one thing or another. I’ve been looking for something that won’t break the bank to get back out on. And this was on my list. Hi mate. These really are nice bikes to ride. Like you I have ridden everything over the last 40 years. But now at 55 I wanted to slow down a bit but still have fun. This is just a fun well made bike. Quality of the build is top draw. I really rate the bike as an old school muscle bike. I think you get a lot of bike for the money.

This is definitely a fun chill out bike to ride. I love riding it and best of all even at slow speeds it puts a smile on your face. I really think these are underestimated bikes. And much much better than the z900 in my opinion by far
@@Bazzamagoo666 trouble is with the cafe racers they look good but are shit to ride over any distance. the xjr1300 cafe racer is an utter waist of time in my opinion as the people that like that style of bike are mostly like me in our 50s as its a kick back to our younger days. The trouble is we can not ride in that position for long. Most people I know that have bought the cafe race style bike. ie the BMW R T9 RACER , XJR and so on. cafe racer style bikes have sold them after a few months as they are no good if you want to do 100 miles plus. I would stay away from the cafe racers if you are going to ride properly. There is a black xjr1300 cafe racer on ebay that has been listed for a year now, and its a good bike but people just don't want them.
I have a CB400SF, only been riding for 4 years or so. I love the XJR1300, and this model specifically. I would take that over an XSR, but I do like the XSR as well. I am a massive 1980s fanboy, and I think these style of bikes are the best... muscle bikes, even my little CB400SF in-line 4 is so comfortable, and can boogie when I want it to.
Looking for a two up bike as a second bike and love the look of xjr's but wish they didn't chop the back end off on the later models....I'm gonna guess the dealer you mentioned was Mitchells and probably Kevin? Great guy! I'm in Turriff, I'll keep an eye out for you!
no I bought the bike in Huddersfield. I also have a tiger 800 which is a cracking bike for long distance. I ride over to apple cross on it. can do all day on that bike.
My last bike was a Z900 RS which I thought was fantastic, but having moved back to the uk I am now looking for a new bike. As good as the Kawasaki is I prefer not to have the same bike again straight away, and I’ve always loved the look of these so it sounds like i need to give one a try! Might actually save myself a few quid! 👍
In my opinion the XJR1300 leaves the z900 standing for quality, for the ride and handling . And I think it looks so much better the the z900 by a mile. I have ridden both bike and would not give my money for the Z900 and its £2000 more than the XJR (used prices) No brainer really but the XJR 1300 which is a much better bike for a lot less money

I'm riding a CB1100RS and as you very well metionend it doesn't need a steering dumper but I have the feeling sometimes when doing highway at speed or when using lively the gas that it would be perfect to have a steering dumper... I've been in contact with hyperpro and they replied that there is no dumper for our types of bikes but now that I've seen yours i have a bit of hope again. Could you tell me how did you fitted the steering dumper or which shop did you ask for the specific parts of the monting kit? I hope to install the same as yours. It's nice to see that some folks still love the torquey big four cylinder engines

Appreciate the fact that rider/reviewer has many years riding experience, but sounds like it's mostly,on (4 cylinder) Japanese bikes.....no mention or comparison with BMW,KTM,Ducati,Aprilia,Moto Guzzi,Harley,Triumph etc. who all manufacture far more interesting and capable bikes than this.....For me,this and the current Z900RS are about the most desirable Jap 4's out there,but no way would I buy one, compared with what else is on the market these days..... but do have to say,the styling is bang on.....

Sadly I would never buy a Ducati as I service all my own bikes so will not pay Ducati to do the belts, but have ridden my mate multistrada which was brilliant. Ridden ktm bikes off road . Even rode my mate Harly fat boy which was not for me. Never ridden a modern moto guzzi mind you. I can not listed every bike I have ridden or owned Would be here weeks. Shit I have forgotten more bikes than I could remember. But mainly I tend to lean to Yamaha , Triumph at the moment but will buy anything I like the look of, might not keep it long. At the moment in my garage is 2 xt660 x/r Yamaha fz8 a triumph 800 and a sherco 290 trials bike.
I have owned the triumph street triple x3 the speed triple x1 and 3 tiger 800 and the 1976 Bonnaville back in the day. even owned an OMZ in the 1980s. So really have ridden all sorts of makes and models and have owned a wide variety of bikes over the last 40 years. In the 1980s it was all the older bikes. I was a dispatch rider in London for 4 years in the early 80s on things like the 250 supper dream and N400 , and GT550. really have forgotten half the bikes I have owned over the years, must have owned about 40 to 50 just over the last 15 years

This bike has recently made it's way onto my list. How's the comfort factor? As a 64 year old it's one of my most important considerations. I do like the looks of it and I wonder how it compares to my old ZRX1100. That was another bike that I loved. I currently have a Gen 1 FZ1 and a 2013 Tiger 1200, but will probably sell them before I move from the US to the UK next year.
Hi I find it fine at 70 to 80 miles an hour and I would be happy doing say 100 miles or so on the motorway but to be honest with the 14lit tank it’s not really a touring bike. I find 80 miles and my fuel light comes on. I have got 126 miles on a tank and think it had about a litre left in it. But this is more of a fun twisting road rider. I go out and do 200 miles every ride with no problems at all. I would not use it for touring though. Saying that some people do.
@@markanstey2654 I have the 2012 model and that has a tank on it that holds 21 liters. When the fuel light comes on, I have 4,5 liters left. Only the latest model unfortunately has a tank that's indeed way too small.
Have mine love it only issue fuel my mate has the older version and he fuelled up once on ride out I fuelled up about two to three times, other than that the xjr1300 totally rocks
Got a mt09sp atm but want something more comfy the mt09sp is amazing butthe ride position is very sports like forcing me forward an crushes me into the tank
I have 2006 xjr1300....I love all the XJR models, but honestly, I prefer the 2005-2014 model line... especially the fuel tank, it has a line that I prefer. but if I could afford it, I would buy one for each color and model 😜😬✌.....un saluto dall Italia ✌
Hi the tail tidy is a Yamaha Oem tail tidy for this bike. it’s the long one but you just don’t use the long bit. I have done a UA-cam clip on it. the exhaust is a carbon fibre Danmoto exhaust off eBay or you can buy it directly from them. I paid extra for the baffle. so mine has that in.
@MrEnglishman6969 no I can't I'm part ex'ing my fireblade as I can only ride for an hour or two before my back kicks off, due to a previous accident which broke two bones in my lower back. gone for a newer XJR1300 (Previously had a carb'd 2002 and a 2007 fuel injected versions) I know work better on sit up bikes and can't wait, fingers crossed no issues picking it up tuesday

What do you think is better for a second bike out of this xjr1300 or a late model speed twin?. I own a mt10 which is my daily. Just sold my 07 speed triple.
The older models had a 21 litre tank and that was thirsty. I know they wanted to lose weight on the newer model and reduced capacity to 14 litres but a mad move in my opinion.
Not really as its no longer a touring bike. These are now just for people wanting to go out and have some fun on a weekend, like a lot of bikes today. these are great for a 200 mile Saturday ride. Anyone that does long distance just dose not go for this sort of bike. I think today its clear with bikes. You have fun bikes and touring bikes.
Steering is great just a bit heavy when you first set off. I find when I jumped from bike to bike as I have 4 bikes the only one that felt odd for 2 mins was the xjr . But honestly within 2 mins it’s like I have never been off it. Steering is direct. Like any bike tyres make a difference. I use Bridgestone bt023
Lost count how many time I looked for 7th gear on my race bikes lol. Definitely not a reason not to buy one. The torque more than makes up for it. But would be nice to have a gear indicator.

Yeah cracking bikes mate. I used to look for 6th gear sometimes, but saying that I used to look for 7th gear on my other bikes lol

I own a Jaffa z900 and a ‘99 XJR1300 with 96k on the clock and although the Yamaha is a great bike it’ll never be better than the Jaffa!!

The reason I could fit one to my 2015 xjr is because the older model has the same frame and front end so it was a straight fit.

Great review. I have an 08 XJR. May I ask what exhaust you have on there? Looks and sounds the biz.
It’s the danmoto carbon fibre exhaust and has the baffle in, which gos in the bottom end. Hope this helps . Off top of my head it was about £150 new

Yeah I know but its not the end of the world. I must admit I start looking to re fuel at 70 miles UP IN THE HIGHLANDS
My 2002 is fairly light on fuel,I have heard the fuel injection is a bit thirstier

I have the exact same bike and feel the same as you. Can you please tell me where you got the tail tidy from and what is the make of the can?
Hi the tail tidy is a Yamaha Oem tail tidy for this bike. it’s the long one but you just don’t use the long bit. I have done a UA-cam clip on it. the exhaust is a carbon fibre Danmoto exhaust off eBay or you can buy it directly from them. I paid extra for the baffle. so mine has that in.

@MrEnglishman6969 no I can't I'm part ex'ing my fireblade as I can only ride for an hour or two before my back kicks off, due to a previous accident which broke two bones in my lower back. gone for a newer XJR1300 (Previously had a carb'd 2002 and a 2007 fuel injected versions) I know work better on sit up bikes and can't wait, fingers crossed no issues picking it up tuesday

Just one question. In hot summer trafic jam.. how do they cool with no air moving a lot? Is there a warning light?
If they get hot the fan kicks in same as any bike. Hope this helps

You have any idea if that can and pipe will fit a -06 xjr? I run a 4-1 system on mine now but want to upgrade to the same can you running.

What do you think is better for a second bike out of this xjr1300 or a late model speed twin?. I own a mt10 which is my daily. Just sold my 07 speed triple.
In my opinion the xjr1300 hands down.
I had the 2012 speed triple
The older models had a 21 litre tank and that was thirsty. I know they wanted to lose weight on the newer model and reduced capacity to 14 litres but a mad move in my opinion.
Not really as its no longer a touring bike. These are now just for people wanting to go out and have some fun on a weekend, like a lot of bikes today. these are great for a 200 mile Saturday ride. Anyone that does long distance just dose not go for this sort of bike. I think today its clear with bikes. You have fun bikes and touring bikes.
How the seating position is flat? Comfy?
Steering is great just a bit heavy when you first set off. I find when I jumped from bike to bike as I have 4 bikes the only one that felt odd for 2 mins was the xjr . But honestly within 2 mins it’s like I have never been off it. Steering is direct. Like any bike tyres make a difference. I use Bridgestone bt023

It needs a 6th gear, I have the original xjr and it’s always felt it needs a 6th gear
Lost count how many time I looked for 7th gear on my race bikes lol. Definitely not a reason not to buy one. The torque more than makes up for it. But would be nice to have a gear indicator.
