- Jesus take the wheel
Brett James, Hillary Lindsey, and Gordie Sampson wrote the song in 2005. James initially didn't think much of the song, and it was almost cut from the demo session
The song was released on October 18, 2005 as the first single from Underwood's debut album, Some Hearts
The song was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for six weeks. It also charted on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs and Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, and was a top twenty hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
Meaning
The song is about a young, single mom who loses control of her car on icy roads while driving home for Christmas. She prays for Jesus to "steer" her life, and in response, she surrenders to Christ.
Influence
The song's success led to the phrase "Jesus take the wheel" becoming a part of popular lexicon. It's used as both a serious and light-hearted plea for help
