Killer mods ! What is the length of the ohlins shock? 230x62.5? I have a push 11-6 that Is 230x57.5 might increase the stroke and whack it in when I get one
This is not critique, I'm just wondering why you felt like mentioning the HTA in this comment, but not any other parts of the geometry? Why mention only one that doesn't mean anything on it's own? Nice video.
Looks great but that lump of a dash box sticking out from the top tube is a joke! looks like you could knock it off if you took the stem spacers out! Come on Trek that's unacceptable and basic bad design.
in one of his videos, Steve of Vorsprung Suspension mentioned handlebar height and fork dive. he said everyone wants to use full travel, but everyone also wants lots of mid stroke support. he said people sometimes perceive lack of mid stroke for having a bar height that is set too low for descending. you can't have a long travel enduro bike with a bar height that's perfect for climbing (nice and low) and then perfect for steep descending. this requires a bar height that allows you to ride high and push down forcefully and extend your arms without getting yanked too far forward. which is essentially what Rob is saying here.
A very long chainstay and a very high handlebar is the way to go in my opinion. It's a shame that there aren't many options for this sort of bike on the market, though.
I already have a 40mm high bar - but you know what? I'm gonna put it higher :) But my bike doesn't have that much stack to begin with... 595mm with 458 mm reach.
I think these Rail are well deserved these upgrades. Got a Rail 9.7 2021 upgraded brakes and cassette etc. This was my very first eBike experience ! Had a previous experience with Enduro motorbike ;)
As I sit in my house watching this Rob I'm blown away at the Quality of that bike!!! ive been a ebiker for twenty years I've never owned anything like this!!! I appreciate you can afford this bike but if I had just the Fox forks I'd cry!! You are so lucky mate!! I guess I'm jealous! If it was mine I'd just sit and stare at it!! How sad am i!!ha ha brilliant video Rob!!
how does the bike ride uphill with the rise? would like to sit a little more upright (herniated discs in the cervical vertebrae) but not lose performance uphill
What a great bike Rob, nice job! For me, this bike has it all... Bosch motor, 750wh battery, XT brakes & drive train, and Fox factory 38! You will have an absolute blast this summer on this! 👍 Please keep us informed with some riding reports....
Welcome to the high handlebars club. 60 rise by 800mm for me. It helps pop with the longer chainstay...still climbs well with a little more lean foward technique 👍
Bang on! Started with MTB -94 been using 50mm Riser bars in every Bike sins! Had the Coil on my Stinky Deelux back in -99 and yes it was FANTASTIC miss that, and the XT is the Best in both brakes and Gears,so yes Man you are Riding THE DREAM 😍
I have the same bike except for my personal customizations which include removing the seat and replacing the seat post with a 13 inch rambone that I keep lubed for active plugging. Its great for bumby rides.
The perfect bike in my eyes. Nice job. Every time I see your videos on this it reminds me that I rushed in and bought the wrong bike (first world problem). Having said that, I definitely prefer aluminum so as soon as they release the alloy frame with Smart system and 750 I’m ordering. I already have a Rail with 170mm fork and it has never left me wanting. I love the increased stroke on the rear. Come on Trek with the alloy. I also wish they and more other manufacturers would do a frame only option. That way we don’t all need to have spare forks and shocks lying around. Keep up the awesome videos.
Rob, nice job! I've been following you for years now, right from your first videos which helped me pull the trigger on my Levo Comp.... I have three other Treks so this was a break from what I’d been riding. I had demo’d several EMTBs and that year Trek wasn’t even close to the Levo IMO. Specialized was leading the pack and really made many breakthroughs, I consider the purchase one of the best investments I’ve ever made. Last fall the motor failed and fortunately Specialized warrantied it. Unfortunately, my local shop went all Trek and the new shop I’m dealing with just doesn’t stack up, or maybe my other shop just spoils me. With the age and service challenges matched with my prior shop converting to Trek I was considering an upgrade to the Rail.. Today I decided to do some research, low and behold my good virtual EMTB consultant Rob had gone that way… So here’s where I’d love you’re input. My take on Specialized being way ahead of the game seems to be confirmed as I do my research. I have the same model Levo as you were riding, and it appears to me the new Trek has many features that are in line with what I already have. Like you I’m not a fan of that control system either. I love the minimalist approach on the Levo and the software seems to have more features and functionality than what I’m even seeing you and others demo on the Trek. Especially with a brand-new motor installed is there even a a good case for the upgrade? If so what is it in your opinion? Thanks ahead of any response really appreciate you input. BTW that build is sweet
I got the same this past weekend and I’m totally addicted. Coming from Brose, Shimano and TQ and different brands I have to say that Trek has nailed in this model not only on factory specs but geometry wise and more than anything the Bosh motor is the most powerful overall. Reliability is the name of the game and this time I’m confident that I made the best choice. Great video Rob.
Interesting Rob. I've pretty much done the same thing but bought it all ready to go in the form of the 2022 Crafty Carbon XR. The only difference is, I've come down in travel from a 2020 180mm Level RR with Coil to this 150/170 running Ohlins Air each end. I'm just preying the Ohlins DH air shock can get me close to a Coil feel
Definitely going with some of those DT Swiss HYBRID hubs! I would say that a proper dedicated eMTB Wheelset is the most important thing on an eMTB. Proper hubs with beefy bearings, steel freehub body, hardcore rims... Learned this the hard way: already cracked a set of carbon wheels not-so-eMTB suited I guess.
Thanks for sharing this man 😊👍, such a big help that you have the opportunity to try so many bikes and share your experiences with us, so that we can use them as a idea/start point for upgrades. I upgraded the same after I saw your video, 170 /160 same as the bike comes with, just longer as Trek Slash use and Burgtec 50. Such a lovely bike has become. Sad that Trek doesn't let us choose travel suspension when we order 😔. Not everyone needs shorter travel suspension and of course not everyone needs longer either.
If you like the feel of the XT shifter, you'd love the Saint. They are different, and I am not sure which feel I prefer actually, but the performance of the Saint drivetrain is just unbelievable.
I like everything about your build. Soo nice. Great platform to start with too. Proper bar height is where its at. Lots of time on the climbs to bend your elbows and adjust and you dont hVe that luxury of time to adjust on the downs. Coil for sure etc etc. Mirrors alot of my own specs. So much so i may have to give carbon wheels another try. Definitely get that ebike damper for the 38. I was going to get a luftkappe for my 38 but i think ill try that damper first.
Sounds like you were looking for a Pole Voima. 😉 Bosch 750 with 190/190 travel for less money. Hoping you’ll get a chance to review the Voima and see how it compares with your custom Trek Rail. I’m sure both are incredible bikes!
Stunning bike Rob, and another pin sharp film to accompany it. I also went for high rise bars (Mounty trailfinders 74mm rise) around 3-4 months ago on My Haibike AllMntn, I really think they will catch on... especially now! Daron
Another great vid Rob! I am presently riding a 2020 XL Rocky Instinct on the west coast of Canada 🇨🇦. I love the way it rides and especially climbs compared to my old Giant Reign 1, but having turned 57 this year, I plan to join my wife on the shift to eMTB. My wife rides a Turbo Levo SL Comp Carbon, which is a great bike. I would possibly follow her and get the same bike, but feel the 320 kWh battery is too small to carry my 6'1" 210lb self up much elevation. I like a chuckable bike and also feel I could use some e-assist going forward, so to me it came down to the Spesh Levo (or Kenevo for the extra travel) SL or the Orbea Rise H series. But then, my brother-in-law just got a 2022 Rail 7 and it is sweet, but feels heavy, like really heavy compared to my Instinct! I like the price point of the 2022 Rail 9.7, and would upgrade as I break or wear out components except for changing the saddle and brakes right out of the gate. What I found really interesting in this video is that you are 6'3" and still went with a large by changing out the stem and bars. When I rode my brother-in-laws Rail in large, the cockpit felt a bit cramped and with the seat post up at, or maybe just above the stem height, my legs couldn't get full climbing extension. Can you explain more on how the size of your Rail is working out for you. Does anyone else here ride a Rail and are also right on the fence, height-wise, between frame sizes? How did you make it work? Any insight would be appreciated. Cheers!
Lovely bike Rob. I did a similar bar/Stem set up with my Allmtn7. Renthal 60mm stem sandwiched between spacers with the 6 degrees downwards and a 40mm fat bar - works a treat for me @ 6ft 3 on an XL frame - Just feels a bit more spacious :-) Enjoy the bike!
How much clearance did you have between the seat-stay and rear triangle after increasing the shock stroke from 57.5 to 65mm on the size large? I am thinking of just removing the travel restriction spacer in the superdelux as the IFP depth is quoted as the same between 57.5 to 65 mm stroke with the metric shocks.
Hey Rob, great channel and thanks for all your EMTB content, love it and your new podcast 👍👍 Looking at getting a Gen 4 Trek Rail 9.8. Guidance on size would be great as you went for Large. I am 193cm/35inch inseam, but longer arms with a span of 198cm. Thanks in advance
Awesome bike and upgrades! Black and red combo is one of the best! I really need a riser bar too, I like to sit high when on flat and uphill, and my original flat bar is too far low then for my taste
Sick bike Rob. Just with your ‘wish’ for electronic shifting, I have just put the SRAM GX AXS onto my XTR cassette on my Merida e-160 (with a 180 fork upgrade 😉). Now, I used to think my XTR was smooth, but WOW! The AXS on the Shimano…. LIKE BUTTER! You should seriously consider it! Thanks for all of your videos. ✌️
@@jeffp5418 Nice one Jeff! It is a sweet combo in my opinion. I have heard some people say that the gear changes are louder than the normal XT/XTR, but I have found it is whisper quiet! Yes I am spoilt, but I will never go back!
Wow, this is truely a dream build. would be interested in what the total RRP would be on this ;) One small thing to add to this that TRANSFORMS the ride and feel (even more than the coil does) - Tyre Inserts! Something like RimPac Pro, that I think are the best compromise.
That is a pretty amazing build alright. I have a 21 9.7 and with my long arms it felt a little tight. Although one bike shop told me not to I put a longer 80 mm stem on it and love it now. Would really like to explore that power adjustment on the new top of the line Rails as the top level assist on the Bosch motor feels pretty unusable in the technical stuff for me at least. Yeah that controller is ugly on both years. Not sure which is worse and makes me want to go with Specialized just to have that part done right.
That fox fork probably bottomed out becsuse fox doesn't use all the "available" travel. It does always left that 1 cm. The stanchions are just longer than 170 mm
Hi Rob. 1.8 to 1.5 crown reducer for this bike, can you please advise where to buy correct one for Rail 9.8 XT 2022. ACROS 51.02.012 AM (recommended on forum) does not fit unfortunately. Many thanks for your help.🙂
I agree XT brakes are a fantastic set, but coming from two previous bikes equipped with Saint I feel I had a little downgrade. Not sure if the difference is too small for changing the XTs...
Great video as always Rob. Really love what you do. Did you notice any loss of "poppyness" in the change from air to coil on the Rail. Contemplating doing the same on my 2020 9.8.
how does the bike ride uphill with the rise? would like to sit a little more upright (herniated discs in the cervical vertebrae) but not lose performance uphill
Awesome bike Rob. What is the reason you went with the EXT spring on the Ohlins? I'm considering putting a coil shock on my Merida e-160. Any thoughts on that? Cheers
Looks like a sweet build mate surprised that u didnt go with the xl frame and run a 32mm stem and a shorter offset fork i,m 188cm and it really works for me each to there own i guess the only thing i woukd change on your bike is xtr shifters and brake levers are way way nicer with bearings rather than plastic bushing like xt they last way longer and are a lighter action on the fingers. Are you running any kind of tyre insert ? Enjoy your ride .
hello I have just bought a 9.8 2022 rail in size L, I am 187 cm tall, and I would like to change telescopic because the original 170 remains too high. do you know if you can fit a 200 and which brand? thank you for your videos luckily I didn't get the bike in size xl!
Hey Rob, great Video, awesome Bike. Could you please tell me all the pieces I need to fit it in my Rail 7 2021 for the öhlins ttx you have? thank you so much
Great review and explanation! And you are spot on with XT drivetrain and brakes...buttery smooth! BTW, what is your RAD since you went to a smaller frame?
Does the EXT 500lb Spring work well for you? I checked the EXT springcalqulator and they rekommended 575/600lbs spring. I am the same hight and weight as you, and i allso have a trek rail with the Öhlins TTX22.m
Awesome vid as always … good stuff! Got a question you may can help me with. I want to charge my bar mounted GoPro from my Rail 9.7 computer. At the lower end of the display unit there is a tiny oddly shaped port that I can not find a cable to fit. Any ideas where I may find that cable?? May be an idea for next video!
About how much do you weigh in pounds? I'm trying to figure out my rear coil shock setup for my Trek Rail. I'm around 170's to 180lb's. Plus pack and such. I was thinking 500lb spring?
When i see a query with somebody asking if they can alter rear suspension travel i advise them not to mess with it. Can you tell me the positives and any negatives you have noticed please? Did trek give you any advice in this matter?
Hi rob, could you explain rationale around 2.4 tyres in a bit more detail? I am getting a reign e soon and was thinking about doing the same as i am short and hoping smaller width will help with cornering a big bike. Thanks!
170mm Fork, 165mm Travel, 750 Battery, 63.5 Head Angle, Full 29er, 24.7 KG in this build. Rides real good, rips!!

Doesn't adding another 15mm travel on the rear suspension risk the rear triangle cross brace hitting the seat tube?
I definitely need to think about raising the bar on my bike. 😏
Another great video Rob. Send us your old forks so I can fit them on my 5 and I’ll give mine away too. Tee hee
What exact ohlins did you go with? I have ordered this bike and I am looking to turn into a enduro as I live in Colorado
hi Rob! great bike! how did you mount the 230x62.5 rear shock? Doesn't the original fit 230x57.5?
Hi rob what were the shark dimensions please and do you get any seat post impact with increased travel? Thank you
couldn't keep my stem tool / headset tight on the Fox 38 - something to do with the e bike 38 taper. Was always coming loose
This is a beginner question, but what do you recommend for an affordable bike stand to get bike off ground to work on it.
Hola que medidas de amortiguador trasero llevas? 230x57.5?
Great video as always Rob. Really love what you do. Did you notice any loss of "poppyness" in the change from air to coil on the Rail. Contemplating doing the same on my 2020 9.8.
When will you upload your video on the Kelly emb?
how does the bike ride uphill with the rise?
would like to sit a little more upright (herniated discs in the cervical vertebrae) but not lose performance uphill
Awesome bike Rob. What is the reason you went with the EXT spring on the Ohlins? I'm considering putting a coil shock on my Merida e-160. Any thoughts on that? Cheers
Could you build something like this with a rail 5 as a starting point ? i can only find 500 and 625 battery versions. can that be upgraded to 750 ?
Do you know jf you can have a Bat extender for the trek rail 2021 with 625w bat???
Looks like a sweet build mate surprised that u didnt go with the xl frame and run a 32mm stem and a shorter offset fork i,m 188cm and it really works for me each to there own i guess the only thing i woukd change on your bike is xtr shifters and brake levers are way way nicer with bearings rather than plastic bushing like xt they last way longer and are a lighter action on the fingers.
Are you running any kind of tyre insert ? Enjoy your ride .
bike looks mint
Hello, huge fan.. what is the brand name of the spring with your coil… looking to do the same setup on my new 2022 Rail….should have in a few weeks.
hello I have just bought a 9.8 2022 rail in size L, I am 187 cm tall, and I would like to change telescopic because the original 170 remains too high. do you know if you can fit a 200 and which brand? thank you for your videos luckily I didn't get the bike in size xl!
looks sweet!
Sick bike.
Rob, have you had any problems with the chain braking? My bike shop says that’s been happening a lot with the XT setup but not the GX setup.
Hey Rob, great Video, awesome Bike.
Could you please tell me all the pieces I need to fit it in my Rail 7 2021 for the öhlins ttx you have? thank you so much
Mate I’m digging the bike, off topic here but can you shed some light on your choice to move away from the levo gen 3 and onto the trek?
Great review and explanation! And you are spot on with XT drivetrain and brakes...buttery smooth!
BTW, what is your RAD since you went to a smaller frame?
Does the EXT 500lb Spring work well for you? I checked the EXT springcalqulator and they rekommended 575/600lbs spring. I am the same hight and weight as you, and i allso have a trek rail with the Öhlins TTX22.m
hows the bike going now have my name on a medium 9.8 arrives end of July but still looking at the Levo is the Trek to long?
Awesome vid as always … good stuff! Got a question you may can help me with. I want to charge my bar mounted GoPro from my Rail 9.7 computer. At the lower end of the display unit there is a tiny oddly shaped port that I can not find a cable to fit. Any ideas where I may find that cable??
May be an idea for next video!
Hi Rob. Really enjoy the show. I was wondering what your thoughts of trying to mullet the Rail. I've got a Rail 7.
Is that the Fox 68HT they offer? Or is there a larger 69mm CSU they still aren't offering?
I desperately need an adapter to mount my fox 38E on this weird sized head tube rail 9.8 2022 help! Link?
Hey where do you get the red decals from mate eBay? Great video 😊
How did your shop source the larger CSU?
Thanks!
