CNC G0704 Part 4 - Y Axis Installation

  • Installation of BD Tools Y Axis. I was going to have the X,Y and Z be in one video, but this turned out to be 20 minutes long so I split it.
I forgot to ask for flats on my ballscrews so I milled those myself. The grinding is a little rough for the X Ballnut recess but I plan on buying a new saddle and using the CNC'd mill to mill the recess on that along with oiling channels.
The ball nut transfer tube is just a strip of printer paper that was wrapped around a sharpie until it was the right outside diameter. I covered it in shipping tape to make it a bit stronger.
I'm using 3/8" Bore Lovejoy L-050 Couplers with Spider Tighteners instead of Oldham due to cost ($35 vs $135). I've used L050 in the past with good results so figured it wasnt worth the extra $100, may change my mind later.
Rapid's at the end are 120IPM followed by 250IPM

for someone who hasn't done a cnc conversion, voiceover or some sort of description of what you are doing (while you are doing it) would make your videos an excellent resource.

Great video and great tip on keeping balls in the ballnut. Thanks for posting.

You might just need to remove a little bit of casting flash in the base. I think mounting the nut the other way causes other issue's - but I cant think of what they are right now as I did this a while ago.

I'm using KelingInc KL-5056D Digital Drivers. Parts 1 and 2 show them being set up and assembled into a controller.
    They are called -
    CNC G0704 Part 1 - Software & Electronics Test
    and
CNC G0704 Part 2 - Assembling the Control Box
Just search for those titles and they should show up. (Sorry, I'd post a direct link but UA-cam wont allow that in the comments)..

It came with the kit I bought (eBay seller "bdtools"), but he also sells them separately. If you search G0704 on eBay there aren't that many items and his generally have a red background on photos.

I wish I did voice overs too, but I've tried and I generally fail and/or take way longer than I want to dedicate to a video on UA-cam.
At some point I will add annotations, but if you buy this kit you get written directions from Billy - those are sufficient, these videos are just a supplement.
I enjoy seeing videos of things I have purchased or plan to purchase and that's the target audience.

No, they do reduce it somewhat - but its still there. It's an acceptable amount for me at the moment but I do plan on replacing them with something else - more than likely the Oldham couplings that are recommended by BD Tools who made this kit and also what hossmachine uses on his.

    The X and Y Ballscrews are RM1605 (16mm Diameter, 5mm thread Pitch), the Z is RM2005 (20mm Diameter and 5mm Pitch).

This seemed easy for you. I started this same project 3 years ago. Still not finished yet. The balls fell of like 5 times when I install y axis. and I had to repacked them again every time ...Geez

Thanks, but that's one of the benefits of video - I can edit out the things that I struggle with. This is also the third CNC Conversion I've done and the second with ball screws. I had many issues the first time I dealt with them.

Looks like he had an Auction finish on the 14th so he may just be waiting to re-list.

Awesome vid! Exactly what i was looking for. Kinda sit, watch and follow. Do you have done the same for lathe? Would be awesome since im attempting to convert a 11x27 precision matthews lathe!

Hi Victor. As commented above, Lovejoy does not supply or endorse "spider tighteners". While they may work for some DIY applications, Lovejoy's recommendation for a backlash free jaw coupling would be Lovejoy's GS series curved jaw coupling.

Do the Spider Tighteners really make is zero backlash?

    Hi,
can you give me the technical specification of the ballscrew?
    like:
    lead;diameter TPI ecc...
    thanks

    Hi,
Where can I find that part which connected to the ballnut alone ( in 3:55 ) ? Is it from ebay?
    Thank you

Thanks for that supervideo, I have a milling drill and brings an original 23mm bolts with much play of course. There is the need to put the same diameter ..or I can just put the 16mm you use.
Moreover stepper motors are NEMA 23 or 34 ..
thank you very much again. Nelson.

Thats what i call a lightning fast reply! Do you plan on converting it? You seems to have a lot of skills. I ordered my part from cnc4pc but dunno which ballscrew to order that will fit best this lathe. Could you please send me a pm i would have some questions if you don't mind. sorry i dunno how to send pm lol

Thanks for the video. I'm in the process of assembling the y axis. I seem to get less +y travel then when using the stock nut. With the Linearmotion's ball nut, the saddle overhangs the base by only .43" before it binds. You seem to get more +y travel with the same ball nut. I'm wondering if the ball nut can be mounted the other way around to increase +y without affecting -y? Thanks.

I just got my G0704 and conversion kit today and i also forgot to ask for the flats on my ballscrews. how much did you take off?

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  10 років тому +1

I cant remember the exact depth I went (sorry). But just enough so the width of the flat is the same or a little wider than the diameter of the set screw.

Hi Thanks for the great video. I do have the same set up with my milling machine but i can not get my motor run .Could you tell me/us how your motor runs. I have the 24volts power with a driver for nema23 and an Arduino uno card . I,m stocked . nobody seems to answer my problem .Appreciate any help here. thanks again

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  9 років тому +1

It's Mobil Vactra #3. I have #3 and #2, I use #2 mainly on my Lathe and #3 on my mill because its higher viscosity and stays on the vertical ways better.

I never considered motor oil on bearings etc. Is there a disadvantage to putting motor oil on a shop vac motor bearing that is squealing?

  • @Altcapball

I don't know if this is an issue or not, but I know when one is working with internal engine components you shouldn't use paper towel as to avoid getting the fibers on points of friction. I could be overblowing this , but perhaps it would be good to use lint free towels to clean the mill? Just a thought.
