  • In this video I show how to build a hydraulic log splitter for cheap, by salvaging parts you can build a DIY splitter that will help with processing your firewood.
    In this three part video, I will be showing how my friend Dave and I built a hydraulic log splitter. I think the total cost was about $400 to build.
    I had the 6.5 hp motor from another project, I salvaged all of the metal , some of the scrap came from my work and the rest from my friend Dave, we also salvaged some hydraulic lines, another one of my friends was happy to donate the cylinder for the project, In return my friends that helped me find parts for this project can always borrow it for there fire wood splitting needs :)
    We used our CNC plasma torch on this project and It made quick work cutting out all of the parts, But one could always free hand cut all the parts fairly easily with a torch.
    Building this log splitter was a fun project and fairly easy to build.
    I would recommend building a log splitter as long as you have a few of the main components like cylinder motor and some metal, If not there's a lot of affordable store bought splitters out there for around $1000. Not to discourage anyone from building one, just weigh out your options when thinking about it.
    Thanks for watching!

    Yea because let me just fire up my plasma CNC machine in my shed. 😂Got it on sale at Harbor Frieght.
    You obviously have a metal working background. Made quick work out of it👍
    Thanks for the vid 👌

    On my channel I have two splitters that my father and I built.... Man could we have used a plasma cutter back in the day... Had to do it the old school way with a torch or wheels. They came out good. Yours is looking nice too! Wish I lived closer, I have a feeling we'd rip bikes in those kick ass trails together!

      BarnStangz Thanks for checking out some of my other videos, I do appreciate it :)
      Like you know when you build these log splitters yourself you know there rock solid and will probably be past down to someone else when we get to old to run them. I definitely will check out your channel :) Haha I know what you mean, I bet we have similar interests and probably would ride dirt bikes and hang out if we lived near each other :)

      Right on man! Yep, not everyone can build stuff, so for that, they can turn to video like what we do and maybe it'll satisfy things... But you are right, when you build things yourself, you make them exactly how you want them. Appreciate you taking a look at my videos, thanks and I made sure to subscribe. I try to get things out on my channel here and there, but don't have a lot of spare time, with a full time job and two kiddos. Good talking to you!

    I thought about building my own splitter. When I added up the cost of the parts and the time it would have took to build it, I just went an purchased one at the home depot for $1200.

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  5 років тому +4

      That’s definitely a factor in building your own, if you don’t own or can salvage some of the parts they can cost close to as much as a store bought one. If I didn’t have some of these parts already I probably would have gone the same route as you. Take care and thanks for commenting.

    Mike I like the things u build and any ass hats that don’t are just that “ass hats” but I would be interested in building the log splitter and also the mill if u had any plans or layouts? Thanks again and keep on building.

    Hi Mike, I would like to make a log splitter similar to yours but first I need some help, maybe you're willing to share some information. Such as, 1) Diameter and length of Hydraulic ram, 2) Flow rate for the hydraulic feed, gallons per minute etc. 3) Expected capacity in tons, Many thanks ,, George

    Mike, got a question.....I am spending my stay at home time because of Covid19 and watched all of your videos from the start. In some of your newer video’s you stated you built the wood splitter with a 100 amp Lincoln weld pak , did I hear this wrong? The Size of the I beam and the thick plate looks like too much for such a small welder, just curious as I have such a welder, but was thinking about the Valcun 220 from HF. Thanks. P.S. wow the new truck build was really something.

    • @davidhelgeson6997
      @davidhelgeson6997 4 роки тому

      you are correct the lincoln 100 is a little small for a project like this the welder he is using in this video is a miller 180 autoset mig welder and yes the vulcan 220 would be a good choice for a project like this

      You can do everything I did with simple tools.
      Just because I had access to these tools do you think I shouldn’t have used them? Why would I work harder?
      Don’t let your lack of tools hold you back, there’s no excuse to not be able to build a log splitter with a welder, angle grinder and a drill press.
