My god. The quality and brilliance of these comedic minds. Can you imagine a dinner party with these people at your table? Now we have Mock the Week. The world is more beige.
I have watched this many time and it always cheers me up - the “fat for Britain” and “shot him though” makes me laugh out loud every time. Appreciate these people. They are/were rare talents.
Barry Humphries, a remarkably gifted comedian, and the man who found him and gave him his big break, Peter Cook, the absolute and undisputed king of satire, and probably the funniest man the UK has ever produced. This interview is the best. Together they are absolute dynamite, just look at them laugh. They make ruse after ruse that has the audience in total stitches. Brilliant!! This is comedy, and these two have it in droves.
I have not seen this for over 18 years as I'd lent a VHS tape of it that I recorded off the TV to someone I worked with at the time (now that I think of it "Withnail & I" was on the same tape, so I was obviously lending them that ). Looking at it today it's 500 times funnier than I even remember. Well worth the wait to see it again, thanks so much for posting. This is comedy nourishment for the soul. Two kings of the craft. No, THREE kings -- God Bless Clive James.
A wonderful evening with 2 of my favorite comedy characters from days gone by. Their memories live on for us oldies in these excellent videos. Thank you.
The words "talented" and "genius" are thrown around, about every performer these days. Barry Humphries truly is!!!! It will be a very sad day when he checks out. One of the greatest and intelligently clever comics of the past 100 years. A REAL great, that has no current day peers. Nowadays we have imposter "comics" like Nish Kumar and Mosiah Gilligan, who are as funny as terminal cancer!!! It just shows how little talent you need to be on TV these days.
Very funny stories. Will be getting any books that Barry has written. Had a good turn of phrase. Now we see where Graham Norton got the idea for the tilting chair.
@@@nn-ro1lv ... Agreed, we´re looking here at a completely different level of humour, the like of which we will never see again. The 70s and 80s were a golden age in the British entertainment industry, and those of us who were alive during that period were privileged. How I used to always look forward to Saturday night´s television !
I actually believe what barry humphries said...that a lot of people are too scared to be on Dame Edna's show..! Shes one brilliant , witty, funny person who doesnt think twice about taking the mickey out of anyone..but never too vulgar....thats nice ..
Baza was fairly gentle here but Pete was one of the few who could hold his own. Comics should be held in the same esteem as philosophers, politicians and shrinks ... the world would be a better place ... please don't kick me for that. I love you all ... espesially the Ausssies ... the rest of you can feck off.
Barry Humphries captured and held us [as an audience] during his career and still holds us in 2019! Peter Cook and Dudley Moore do the same. Harry Enfield, Peter Kay, etc have had huge commercial success, but have been forgotten. Why? Well, they are both first generation comedians from normal income backgrounds. Peter, Barry and Dud had financial backing from family to indulge. What do you think?
No amount of financial backing can buy the level of humour passing between Barry Humphries and Peter Cook in this interview. Cook was already suffering ill health, while Humphries was on top form, in every sense. Money has nothing to do with it.
Gotta love the dishevelled languor of both Peter and Barry. Collapsed in suited profusion, uttering their comedic pronouncements and superb anecdotage. In fact I wouldn;t be surprised if they both had a koala sit on thier face for a bit in the green room before doing the interview!
Where did Graham Norton get his big red chair idea ? 😀 Barry Humphries is a brilliant, funny man - shame the woke crowd don’t understand this type of comedy
Peter Cook doesn't give enough - this is famous; as a performer, he gives his all, but he doesn't pick sides, unless its his own, and more often than not he forgets to pick that one. For instance, this interview. Barry Humphries adores Peter. He even ridiculed him with Les Patterson. What better tribute for a born Peter Cook? But look at his other choice for sides: the slobbering interviewer. It wouldn't have harmed him to choose wisely. "Okay-Okay, I choose that one then," says Peter Cook, testily, mistaking himself for being on a quiz show. Peter Morningsnow sympathizes. He often mistakes himself for being on a quiz show. He has neglected a hundred Barry Humphries of his own. He has catered to the slobbering interviewer. He never recognized him as that, though; he thought he was him.
What I wrote is nonsense, I agree. But I disagree that it is a rant. It is the essence of a ramble, in the peripatetic or Byronian sense. And that bit about the slobbering interviewer - Bach never nailed it better.
@@kingy002 Think he's been sniffing too many beer mats, glue or a canister of lighter fuel but at least he has the self-awareness to know he's talking bo.....s lol.
Apparently Peter Cook ,at the dinner table,or in the pub, among friends was so funny people literally begged him to stop as they laughed so much it hurt.Ive seen and heard an awful lot of his stuff over the years from beyond the fringe to dereck and clive, plus loads of interviews and I'm bound to say he was a talented man,but this comedic godhood some people elevate him to:here hes pretty obviously annoyed that Barry Humphries has Clive James, and the audience, enthralled but both his delivery and the platypus story itself are just flat. One swallow doesn't make a summer I know but I think unless he was the undoubted star of the show he couldn't be bothered.Comments anyone?
Oh, on the contrary. I think that his (Cook's) admiration of BH is all too apparent. They clearly also got on with each other tremendously well. As for Humphries stealing the show, bear in mind that you are watching the second half of the programme. In the first half all the attention was paid to Cook. Added to which, in any event, Cook - as he admits - is slothful enough to be happy to let somebody else carry a show. What I see is two very talented friends enjoying an evening together.
What a master raconteur and wit is Barry Humphries. Classy, urbane, cultured and a bone fide genius.
I love how Humphries looks around at Cook and James and the audience, engaging them all, encouraging them to enjoy his wit. He's brilliant!
Always said that about Barry. Engages everybody
He's just a bundle of joy.
He's a mischief maker, pure and simple! RIP to him. @@australian6983
Three wise and witty Gentlemen of a bygone era.
My god. The quality and brilliance of these comedic minds. Can you imagine a dinner party with these people at your table? Now we have Mock the Week. The world is more beige.
Three brilliant individuals, completely different in style, but obviously appreciating each others wit , brillian to watch, thanks for posting.
I have watched this many time and it always cheers me up - the “fat for Britain” and “shot him though” makes me laugh out loud every time. Appreciate these people. They are/were rare talents.
Yes, wonderful stuff indeed. All class acts.
A meeting of minds the likes of which I doubt we'll see again. Wonderful.
Yes, a lot of talent in that studio. All three were all giants in their own way.
Thanks for posting - two very funny people. And nice to see Peter Cook really laughing.
Three of the greatest comedians of all time in one hilarious package. Great stuff
We miss the parting of this fine trio.
Anyone who can make Peter Cook crack up ,is a legend!
Cook really admired Humphries.

PC was probably one of the greatest funnymen but even he said the King who inspired him was SM, ime sure you can decode that?

pure comic gold...thanks for posting.
A wonderful evening with 2 of my favorite comedy characters from days gone by. Their memories live on for us oldies in these excellent videos. Thank you.
I love how during the whole interview, Humphries keeps looking left to Peter Cook and how Peter really seems to enjoy him
I love the way Peter Cook really gets Barry Humphries
Cook was a massive fan of Humphries.
nice interview. Clive James asking intelligent questions and good to see Barry making Peter laugh
Amazing stuff....Peter is in awe of the brilliant Barry Humphries
Glorious! Thanks so much for this 4 part upload.
Thanks so much Frog and Peach for uploading this gem. I could listen all day to these three gentlemen's conversation.
couldnt you just sit down forever and listen to these 2 men speak ? i could
Thank you for posting!
I wish someone would air these old talk shows in the US.
Barry H. is the most civilised and the funniest man on earth.
Do we have anybody today as good as those three? All three class acts.
Indeed they are.
Full of sauce, full of hilarious wit. Two greats having a giggle. Thank you ! 😅💥
4:43 "In fact even when I give them to people....." hahahaha 😀 Saw him live on stage in London. Sooo funny.
I loved this interview. Hysterically funny. Barry Humphries Kola story had me doubled over in laughter.

Excellent TV, where has it gone
Barry Humphries is a megastar!
Deary me! Thanks for posting these four clips. I LOVE Barry Humphries. That guy is warped something rotten - fantastix story teller.

peter cook gave barry Humphries his big break and he also gave Frankie Howerd his comeback break. What a guy!
Barry always gets Clive in hysterics, you can see him waiting to delvier the next line that keeps the mirth rolling.
Peter Cook is a legend. I see the same connection with Barry that he had with Dudley. Awesome ❤
I just adore Barry Humphries.
R.I.P Barry😔
Lovely to see PC genuinely entertained by Barry.
These boys are masters of timing .
Comic genius - all of them. Great stuff!!!

Wow.
two comedy geniuses in 1 room
Funny shit, I'm from Melbourne and have seen the playtipii also, but the pair were quite active in the darkened room.

If only it had been Derek and Clive and Barry.
Would you heckle any of these three geniuses?
reminds me when a koala pooed in front of us and my colleague broke it in half and sniffed it to see if it was minty !
Not many could make Peter Cook crack up.
I think he was wonderful. A highly intelligent, creative and witty human being.
This is so wonderful 😂😂
Two hero’s of comedy
What a wonderful original aboriginal...completely unique...
And the last one has gone. We have lost out wits because we have lost our wits. Never again. How sad.
These three are really bringing out the best of each other.
@@hopebgood You missed the point ... oh well
wow an inaudible interview. How mysterious .
Did Barry's tongue ever come out of his cheek ?!
dueling comedians
You can't duel with a genius
not dueling, enhancing each other.
Tom Sharman definitely not duelling!
Surprised Sir Les didn't show up with ole Cookie
Is David Mitchell Barry Humphries' love child?
SO THATS WHERE GRAHAM NORTON GOT HIS TIPPING CHAIR FROM----NOTHINGS NEW
Oh I'm certainly not a snob...if I was I wouldn't be on this show 😂😂
Where did Graham Norton get his big red chair idea ? 😀 Barry Humphries is a brilliant, funny man - shame the woke crowd don’t understand this type of comedy
i work in museum education in glasgow, come home barry.
Barry is sharper than Peter here...
Barry is very tall...but Peter Cook looks much taller here.
2:16 - You could do that joke again today! (2017)
*Three
How is it that a man who grew up in Melbourne, with a mother who sounds like Dame Edna, speaks with a posh English accent??? just wondering😉
You need your ears waxed out. Humphries doesn't sound English at all...
The Barry Humphries Show
Peter Cook's Melbourne Zoo/platypus story is a pisser!
That is what you call a talk show, nobody cares about who gets the laughs.
Nipples never heal, you know. lol
Ive gone deaf in one ear.

Marsupial inhalation.
I prefer Sir Les Patterson
Peter Cook was a clever man but he's rather pedestrian compared to Barry.
PFT don't be ridiculous.
only in this interview, he's usually a cracking raconteur.
To be fair, this is the second half of the show. Peter is the first to be interviewed by Clive and duly, respectfully let's Barry have his time.
Just Brilliant 😀

“Obviously annoyed”? When? When he was laughing heartily at Barry’s jokes throughout the interview?
He seemed annoyed to me and,as I said,I've seen an awful lot of him as both performer and interviewee over the years.

I sort of half agree ..but I would say Barry is off the sauce and Peter is not really sober.
