  • One of the rarest and most obscure 7" EPs from Brazilian recording industry.
Although made by one of the biggest Brazilian record companies, nothing is known about its creation.
The whereabouts of another copies are unknown, but they probably do exist.
I thank my friend Gil - one of the most respected vinyl traders in Brazil and a natural-born music researcher - for this discovery.
At least the year of this release is known, so hypotheses was created after intense research.
    The Brazilian Scenario:
At the end of the year 1980, Baby Consuelo and Pepeu Gomes ended up in a controversy with the release of the song "O Mal é o Que Sai da Boca do Homem" ("Evil is What Get Out The Mouth of Man").
Brazil was still under a military dictatorship.
Talking about certain taboo subjects, openly and explicitly, could be classified as a subversive or rebellious act, punishable and censurable.
The song made by Baby and Pepeu was exactly the case, making a clear endorsement for marijuana use.
    The 7" EP:
Probably - trying to take some advantage of this repercussion - renowned artists have recorded - under the pseudonym "Grupo Natureza" ("Nature Group") - the song "Pode Acreditar" ("You Can Believe"), composed by a unknown Niltinho.
This song is present only in this EP, with vocal and instrumental versions, each one per side.
In the vocal version - side A - we have lyrics narrating the youth's way of life at the time, culminating in the following verses:
"Baseado é o mal que entra pela boca do homem." ("Joint is the evil that enters through the mouth of man.")
"Baseado é o mal que acaba com a cabeça do homem." ("Joint is the evil that destroys the head of man.")
In the instrumental version - side B - there is a vocal part, with only the remarkable verses mentioned above and very well highlighted.
    The "Group":
The pseudonym "Grupo Natureza" ("Nature Group") was an alternative if this release had negative results, keeping the careers' integrity and the privacy of the minds behind the whole project.
    Aborted Release:
Few copies were pressed for evaluation, not coming out of Som Livre's headquarters, because they were soon condemned and blocked by the directors' board.
In the song of Baby and Pepeu, although the word "baseado" ("joint") is mentioned several times, it can be justified and interpreted with other meanings, if necessary.
But in "Pode Acreditar" ("You Can Believe") - despite the fact that the song is opposing Baby and Pepeu's point of view, condemning marijuana's use - the word "baseado" ("joint") has no other possible interpretation: In the lyrics, "baseado" ("joint") is marijuana literally.
Maybe the whole project could have been an attempt to protest against Baby and Pepeu, or just a opportunity for potential profits.
Som Livre's directors' board analysed the project and did not wanted to assume risks in exchange for sales of a ordinary EP.
    The Team:
Observing the arrangements and other factors, we can only have the following names in mind: Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge.
"Pode Acreditar" ("You Can Believe") evolves a bit like "Palco" ("Stage") by Gilberto Gil, released in the album "Luar" ("Moonlight"), also in 1981.
At the production of "Luar" ("Moonlight") were Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge, the two side by side with Liminha (from Mutantes).
In the same year of 1981, the two were at Som Livre's studios recording the 7" EP "Os Temas Instrumentais da Novela Baila Comigo" ("The Soap Opera Baila Comigo's Instrumental Soundtrack"), considered to be an embryo of the duo's famous LP released in the following year - 1982 - also under the same label.
But even without taking into account any facts, dates or evidences, even without knowing under what label or record company "Pode Acreditar" ("You can Believe") was released, the essential clue is just the most obvious one: The music by itself.
Just listening to both sides of this EP, there is a clear and solid signature of Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge's genius and talent.
An integral part of the Grimaldi Collection.
Noise intentionally inserted, making possible the hearing but making impossible another kind of use.
