This is the Leidenfrost-Effect:
The metal ball is so hot that the water vaporises and builds a protective layer around the ball before the water can even touch it.
Only when the metal cools down to a certain point, the vapor wears of, water comes into contact with the ball and the water instantly starts to absorb the heat and starts to boil.

Why doesn't the vapor rise like boiling bubbles? Sicne presumably it is lighter than the liquid...
@@justinbirchell5436it is what happens, you can see in the video that the bubbles keep rising up but the ball is so hot that it keeps generating more vapour which surrounds the ball

The one thing I love about this video is how it doesn't give stupid EDM music and a ridiculously long time just to see the one thing we wanted to look at. Great job!
That's because it was 10 years ago, when UA-cam was still a cool place with no frauds for money.
@@rebelsimone-There were plenty of people out for money then, and plenty who do small content like this today.
Electrical Discharge Machining music? That would be amazing
@@Walrus101 no. There were many less users, no third world especially. And UA-cam itself headed less towards monetization.
@@rebelsimone- What do you mean "no?" What you said does not invalidate what I did, both are true. You seem to be hyperbolizing, refusing to acknowledge that both small creators and cash grabbing ones have always been a thing.
Also, no freakin clue what you are talking about with "third world" users or creators. I don't see "third world" videos showing up on my UA-cam (whatever those even are exactly) and don't see why they'd be an issue.

I’ve heard of this. Very hot objects create a steam layer around them that insulates them from the surrounding cold environment. It’s also why you can run your hand through flowing lava if you slap it through fast enough because the steam on your hand should protect it temporarily
Yeah…not willing to test that out 😂

When something really hot make contact with water it make a thin layer of vaporized water around the object
It is actually an interesting effect that comes with water/ice comes into contact with super hot objects. The ball was so hot the water that first touched it turned into steam and created a thin layer that acts like a protective blanket against the water surrounding it. That is what the bubble formed after it was dropped in. But as time goes on the steam transfers energy into the water, losing the protective layer and allowing the rest of the ball to make contact with the water and rapidly cooling it.

And if you don't want to look it up. Basically the ball is hot enough to instantly evaporate the water around it, creating a bubble of steam that insulates it from cooling for a short amount of time. Eventually it cools enough that it no longer produces steam, and loses the bubble, which allows it to begin heating the rest of the water.
