  • In this video I will be taking a look at the Automower 315X by Husqvarna after 1 year (2 seasons) of use. The automower 315X is a robotic lawn mower that can handle yards up to 0.4 acres. While robot lawnmowers are gaining traction in the US, they have been a big hit in the EU. The robotic lawn mower by Husqvarna is a great tool for anyone’s toolbox for great lawn care.
    All automowers work in the rain, which allows for your lawn to always look great. They all also feature a pin code required to access the robot and a loud alarm if tampered with. The automowers are very quiet, allowing for operation at night without disturbing you or your neighbors.
    The video will go over several features of the Husqvarna robotic lawn mower and highlight major advantages of the robot.
    I personally recommend going through a local Husqvarna shop for the best installation results.

    I've watched quite a few videos on robotic mowers, and this video is by far the most thorough. Nice work!
    By the way, you might consider setting the height on your mower high when you're starting out with tall grass. Then lower it a bit at a time. It should be able to mow for longer than way, and you also won't have to collect clumps of grass as it'll fall down into the grass canopy and turn into mulch far more easily.

    I also have a 315, but the older model. The mower is now into its fifth season and for the most part it has been a great experience. Mine does not have bluetooth or wifi or mobile connection, nor GPS or lights, so a "stone age" model if you wish.
    Lightning is its worst enemy - we had a lightning strike a couple of years back that actually set the house next to ours on fire, and although the mower was in the cradle and we had disconnected the power the lightning hit the boundry wire and fried the charging station. In the area I live, most people have robotic mowers of one kind or another, and I noticed that for a couple of weeks after that incident none of them were mowing and the Husqvarna dealer (luckily quite close to us) was very busy repairing them. A new electronics board for the charging station set me back only around 50$, so no complaints there.
    The terrain kit should be standard. I only bought it this year but the difference is dramatic. My lawn is quite complex and hilly in sections, and I was used to getting the mower unstuck once or twice a week, especially when the grass was wet. After the terrain kit was installed I have had no such incident.
    After four years of service it was in dire need of a service. I was worried that the service would be costly, but it was only around 250 US$, which I consider cheap seeing the difference in performance after the service.
    We love our little Shawn the sheep (yes, it's got a name...), and although it would be nice to have an app to monitor it, I don't see that as a reason to get a newer model. It was more cumbersome to set up when I had to do everything on the mower itself rather than in an app, but once its set up it can just do its thing and I wouldn't be using the app much - or at all.
    So yes, it's great. The lawn looks better than ever and I can't imagine ever going back to a normal lawn mower.

    • @ohrosberg
      @ohrosberg 2 роки тому

      @@stevenbuckingham2152 Thank you for your question. Ther are crisis crossing marks left by the mower by the wheels (but not the knives), that is true, more if it's a rainy day than if it's a dry day. And personally they don't bother me at all. Firstly, they don't show all that much, and secondly there are no visible off-cuts, no need to rake or remove cut grass from the lawn. The cut grass is around 0.05 inches long and just slips to the grass floor where it decomposes quickly fertilizing the lawn. Thirdly, the criss-crossing marks usually disappear quickly, a couple of hours after cutting you usually can't see them anymore, a little longer if it's a rainy day.

      Can you not buy more wire and split it in? You'd just need to find a electrical "Y" splitter and splice it in. It may be a little ad lib of a set up but I don't think it would affect the function other than what you're trying to achieve

    • @subwarpspeed
      @subwarpspeed 3 роки тому

      @@elisampley7598 no it doesn't work that way. The boundary out (AL) and every Guide sends a signal that is collected commonly in the in-connector (AR). These signals have some bits to identify the ID (so you can have mowers close to other boundaries) and it also identifies what it is (AL, G1, G2, G3 - if the have more than G1). The guides are connected to the boundary wire with T connectors. I assume it's timed so it doesn't send out them all at the same time. Where talking around 80 times per second that this is repeated.
      If you splice the guide wire with a Y connector you will have two places it connects to the boundary wire. And the effect will be that the boundary signal will go up the guide to the new split and down the other leg eventually ending in AR. Thus the mower will never venture inside the area covered by the two lines after the split.
      The way it works is reasonable but sure it is handy for Husqvarna the properties of how this works prevents buyers from "cheating".

      GPS has two systems, one for the military and another for civilian use. The gps we use only as an accuracy of like +/-20ft. I dont know the exact number but it also depends on your gps device. It would be difficult for small lawns

      Non-military GPS has a built-in "bobble" / noise factor that is introduced on purpose. So it will never be good enough to navigate a yard. This may be changing in the future, but right now the CEP is about 30ft. Not even close to usable for small scale precise navigation.

    430X, will soon begin its 5th season. Here in Sweden (Husqvarna's origin, though the mowers are built in the UK (England)) robotic mowers are ubiquitous. Every toolshop or gardening dealer that sells walk-behind or ride on mowers have some brand of robotic mower too. It's nothing special at all to buy that instead of other mowers.
    They also give a superior result thanks to cutting often, much more than any average home owner would do.

    • @subwarpspeed
      @subwarpspeed 3 роки тому +1

      @@BeardedTechGuy 550 EPOS is released and when comparing without material (as it's anyways not included with automower) it's about 90% more expensive for that than the 450X when you factor in the reference station needed. Thus far in other equipment the RTK GNSS tech (in finished) products have kept quite expensive.
      They communicate by radio but they very much encourage direct line of sight. So big open areas. Now they will milk this market a bit surely but it's inherently a more expensive tech, I think we will be sticking with boundary wires for a long time before the cost of it being professionally installed is more than an the mowers not requiring boundary wire.

    • @robert4you
      @robert4you 2 роки тому

      @@stevenbuckingham2152 Nope. No marks whatsoever here. But I guess it also depends on which type of grass you have: a "thicker" one which is not cut properly, but in a higher position may leave some marks (maybe?), but then the grass has to be *really* thick.
      The only time I have seen som criss-crossing marks is in the morning when the grass is still a little wet. But as soon as the sun is up, or the grass is more dry, they are gone. If you use the robot mower at the lowest setting (cutting) you avoid any marks. Still very happy with my Automower. 🙂

    I have one too. For self-install, a Garden Weasel step-on edger or similar works pretty well for laying the wire in the ground. It's worth the $30.
    What I'm struggling with is my lawn is dying. I wonder if the mower has anything to do with that or if it was just the drought conditions.
    Biggest downside to these things seems to be Husqvarna support is terrible. From what I've heard, buy through an authorized dealer or you'll be out of luck if something breaks.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      The edger is a good idea! I'm going to be moving a large portion of my boundary around so I'll have to pick one up.
      I would make sure that your grass type is being cut at the correct height. Some grasses need to grow taller than others and certain model automowers may not be able to support the needed height. Also lack of water can definitely negatively impact grasses, and some grasses are better than others at lack of water.
      That's an interesting point about support I've only dealt with my dealer which has been great never with support directly.

    Tip on "Returning to Charging Station" and Guide Wires and Boundary Wires. We didn't install the Guide Wires at all even though with he 430XH you can have two of them. Initially there were times when the Automower found it difficult to return to the Charging Station. I went into the App and Turned off the signal for Guide Wires completely and that improved things. But it was still taking a long time. I saw that the setting for Boundary wires was set for a 11 minute delay. So I ret that to 0 minutes. And now my Automower has no trouble fining its way tot he Charging Station and goes immediately. Btween the GPS signal and the signal that comes from eh Charging Station itself there wasn't any need to do a Guide Wire except if you want to create zones for mowing.

    A tip is to lay paving stone (I believe it is called that. Rectangular in brickform) on the edge of your garden and around trees. That will eliminate the need to weed whack as the stones pushes the grass line back and the mower can cut all the grass👌

    For anyone who just bought a Husqvarna automower be aware that the cutting height adjustment does not show up for the first two weeks in the app or on the mower's menu (as of April 26 2022 anyway). Husqvarna states this is to let the boundary wire lay down - it forces the mower cutting height to max for the first two weeks.

      Glad you liked the video! Originally I used a Fluke Network Cable tester but having the probe was kind of annoying. So I picked up one that has its probe on a long wire and I can rock it back and forth. It can be found here: amzn.to/2TdNIcQ For me, I just turn eco mode off on the robot so the wires are live and don't even bother hooking up the tone generator, the probe can pickup the signal from the charging dock. I guess you can also use a AM radio (cheaper) but I didn't bother trying that.

    I want to get this for my father who is getting to the point where he is physically unable to mow his lawn any longer, how much input through a smart device is needed on a regular basis? It takes me about 30 minutes or so to mow his lawn, but he wants it mowed on his schedule, not my availability. If I purchase this for him and have to be there to constantly input stuff through my smart phone then I might as well just burn a half hour and mow. On the other hand it pays for itself in the first year over paying a service to do it, so I'm on the fence. Your thoughts?

    • @dennis5760
      @dennis5760 3 роки тому +1

      You can just setup a schedule that it runs by, it can vary per day. If you get an X line model like tBTC says you can do changes to schedule remotely from your phone (multiple phones/users can interact with one mower). You would also get notifications if it gets stuck or faces other issues. The first year usually carries some challenges and requires corrections/changes but when it's good to go it usually just keeps on trucking. The amount you need to let it run per day/week varies with lawn size, you'll find a good ratio over time. So expect more work/tweaking the first year and then a bunch of years with "no" work except off season storage, some cleaning now and then and at least seasonal blade changes.
      Given your specific scenario I would definitely look at an X-line.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +1

      As Dennis said, once it is setup the automower really is set it and forget it. The only time you would need to be involved is if a wire gets cut somehow. Setup can be a bit involved if you have a yard that has a lot of different areas or "islands". It took me a whole season to get things tweaked the way I wanted only to have a large portion of my lawn dug up from a plumbing issue. In the process of repairing things I ended up deciding to change the location of my charging base as well as the layout of my boundary and guide wires. That move is all done and complete but took a few days to get done. Now I'm on to tweaking things a bit to make it perfect.
      With the X-Line you can make changes to it without needing to physically be there. If it gets stuck or runs out of battery before getting back to its charger then you would need to go over and move it as they are a bit on the heavier side. That can be avoided with proper setup. It will also take longer for it to mow then you would, so you'll want to make sure that isn't going to be an issue. I have mine just run at night so it doesn't get in the way, but you need to be in an area where you can do that without concern of it getting run over or stolen.

      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +4

      Great question! I will start by saying I am not a professional installer and I highly encourage you to reach out to a husqvarana installer to get their input.
      If you want to run an automower and dog fence in the same yard your best option is to get a dog fence that runs on FM instead of AM (automower uses AM). I found that there is one by "DogWatch" that is FM that I would recommend looking into. Seems like they even have a "smart" version that can alert you on your phone which seems cool. You'll still need to be careful of laying both down as if you are trenching you won't want to accidentally break the other. I'd also recommend a little bit of distance between the two boundary wires..
      Another option is that the automower (verify the one you are considering) can turn off the boundary wire when it's charging. So as long as the dogs aren't out when the mower is running you may be fine in that instance too (specially if you can turn off the dog fence when not in use). You can also change the frequency on the automower, so you could get lucky there but it seems for most people that is very hit or miss and will depend on the pet fence. I would say don't count on this option working out for you.

    Is there a reason why, at the 14 minute mark, it appears to not be cutting anything? Also, how close can it cut to an object in the yard, such as a tree, or along a fence line? Seems like there might be a lot of weed whacking to do.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  2 роки тому

      For that particular shot it was going back to the charger and following the boundary wire. When returning to the charger the automower is not cutting grass.
      It won't get as close to edges as you can with a lawn mower so there would still be weed whacking that needs to get done. For my yard I haven't noticed any major uptick in weed whacking required though, I normally had to spend 20-25 minutes weed whacking every few weeks with a push mower and its about the same amount of time now.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому

      For the edge of grass that is next to a driveway or sidewalk you can set the "distance past" allowed for how far over the boundary wire the lawn mower can go. I do this and it works fine for me. If you like the look of grass with an edger, then you would still need to use an edger just like a normal push mower.
      For the edge of grass next to a fence / house / etc. it will not be able to get all of the grass and would require a weed whacker just like when using a normal push mower. I will say I could get closer with my push mower, but I still had to use a weed whacker to actually get all the grass so that isn't creating any extra work for me there.

    Thanks for the video - very informative.
    I plan to get one of these mowers. Can your provide more detail on wiring? I'm wondering about islands. The install info makes a big deal about not crossing the wires leading out to an island. My guess is the wires stay parallel and the signal cancels so the mower doesn't "see" it. But I don't know how you ensure the wires don't cross if you bury them. Running them on the surface and stapling them down would work, of course, but burying I worry they could cross and I'd never know.
    They say crossing wires creates interference. I'm not sure I understand the mechanics behind why that is so. Any insight you could give would be appreciated.

      Its really quick but at 0:26 in the video i do show how I have my garden bed island off. The wire comes in on one side, goes around and comes down on the other side.
      The cables have to be close enough together so that the automower can detect both and it will know that it can ignore that portion of the boundary wire.
      My boundary wire around the islands is in the ground. I use this tool for installing the boundary wire: amzn.to/3LdpdoJ

    • @subwarpspeed
      @subwarpspeed 3 роки тому

      Wapiti. The rated capacity is for the mower working as much as it can (lower models have a software lock but others it means 24h/7d). So if you don't want it out in the days you have to factor in just how many hours it gets out of a given day. With that said the capacity is given plus/minus 20% depending on how complex the area is. And it feels like it is measured on the early seasons when it really grows. If you're in a climate that is very dry and don't have irrigation the capacity goes up.
      Since the mower travels by random or with GPS cutting it has a high-level of planning (not steering) it is not a concept of "continue where he stop".

      If they are physically separated with no level ground that connects them you still can create zones, but have to move the mower to the zone you want to mow and then move it back to the charger when/if it runs out of battery. You only need one charging station. If you can have a path between the two lawn areas you can create a guide wire and the mower will follow it when it is scheduled to do the zone.

      @BeardedTechGuy  Рік тому +1

      The 315x is rated for .44 acres and with my almost .4 acre lot (with a bit of complexity) I feel like I'm probably hitting the upper limits of its capacity so with your larger yard you'd probably be better off looking at a larger model. The different mowers also have different hill capabilities as well so you'll want to make sure to pick the correctly sized one for your yard.
      You can find a list of all the mowers currently being sold by Husqvarna here: www.husqvarna.com/us/robotic-lawn-mowers/ and if you have a local Husqvarna dealer in your area they would be able to help make sure you right size the correct mower.

    I've got my doubts that it can deal with medium to large pinecones and branches.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +1

      Just like a normal lawn mower, you would want to clear your lawn of debris or items that are laying out before mowing. With that said pine cones shouldn't be an issue unless they are so large the mower can't drive over them. They wouldn't get cut up but it wouldn't impede the mower. For branches, same thing but you run the risk of the branch getting wedged under the mower which could cause damage. Anything smaller then a small stick I would advise picking them up to prevent damage to any mower or person.

    I only recommend this thing for small lawns with a simplistic layout. It also doesn’t mulch the grass very good, a Honda could absolutely decimate that grass

    • @subwarpspeed
      @subwarpspeed 3 роки тому +2

      This one is for smaller lawns, top model is 5000 m² / 1.25 acres.
      Honda Miimo uses the same idea with small razor blades so how does it mulch? And if it should cut high grass the whole point of a robotic lawn mower is missed. Actually decimating the grass length is what they should do, if we go back to the words origin about reducing something by 10%. It should only cut off a small portion each time.
