    She stood there in uniform wearing all her medals including the French Medal of Honor for fighting for the Resistance and a British medal for helping downed flyers. I don't know if the Americans gave her any medals.

      @Lee Irby For having risked her life and worked to save the Free World from Nazism, doing undercover work in hostile areas.

      The American born Princess Grace of Monaco gave her a home when the French wouldn’t help after she was booted from her home as an elder. That says something.

      She didn't fight for the Americans, she fought for France and was a French citizen.

    This is not the full speech, she talked of her humiliation, when as a world star, a hero of the French Resistance in WWII (see the Legion of Honour, the Criox de Guerre and the Criox de Liberation she is wearing) she returned to the US and found Jim Crow laws and attitudes still strong. When she went with friends to New York’s Stork Club and the others at her table were served but she was not and she phoned the NYC Police Commissioner and the NCCP, got her food but refused it and the resulting publicity greatly reduced the Stork Club’s business. A great women!

    An outstanding personality who died far too early. Josephine Baker captivated with her charisma, determination, willingness to perform and humanity. She was a visionary, a trailblazer who ventured into untrodden territory. Until her death, she prepared a path for other women, and of course especially for those who were discriminated against, for all to follow.

    Is there no video available? The fake applause is annoying.

    Is this a genuine recording ? I’m surprised that she’s still got an American accent after all the years ! I thought that she completely abandoned it and replaced it with a French and British accent ... well when she started her speech she attempted to speak with her new accent, but as the speech went on she couldn’t help but speak with her natural accent ...

    Why the fake applause !

    • @apmld
      @apmld 3 роки тому +2

      it is not fake it is the real recording, but her voice has been isolated and the surroundig sound lowered (except for the times of applause) to hear it correctly.

    Like most women in her 60's she has grown a beard around her face. I think the 5'oclock shadow makes her more distinguished.
