I'm confused ... Ustadji is pitched ma as Sa with the 8th fret slid down to komal. .... Wouldn't this (in ma to Sa ) render dha as komal and not re as in the vocabulary of Ahir Bharaiv ??? If I may. Thanks
You're thinking like a westerner. LOL. Changing the drone strings from Pa to Ma doesn't transpose the raag. Sa is still Sa. It does make Ga sound like a leading tone to Ma and adds weight to Dha since it's a major 3rd above one of the drone notes instead of a major 2nd. But Sa is still home base. I have heard people play this raag with Pa as the drone. Malkauns also has the drone as Sa and Ma. Try analyzing Marwa as a westerner where the drone is shudh G and shudh Dha in addition to Sa. And Rageshri has the drone as Dha and Ma.
Unmatched no doubt..but why the Ustad sings along, it’s basically for his own benefit or convenience. The audience reacts in his or her own way. My connoisseur friend Pradeep says he feels as if soda has been added to an expensive single malt.
