They don't realize that he could have talked himself out of that situation, which he did try to do when he kept saying he would go get Harry. So at some point he knew his efforts to try to get out of the situation was hopeless, but he was actually more afraid of not being able to tell Harry what he needed to know, than dying! He basically offered up his life to give Harry a chance to defeat the Dark Lord. Severus most certainly sacrificed his life for the cause
